Can you be TOO SLOW?

I ran today (very slowly as usual) and realized that while I was running I was not able to talk.

So, I slowed it down EVEN more. I could talk. But, I was going reeeeeeeeally slowly.

Is there such a thing as too slow while following C25K?

As long as you're still moving, no.

Speed kills newbies.

This is a great time to start keeping a running log. In a year or two you'll be able to look back and see just how much progress you've made.

On my training runs, grandmothers in walkers pass me, snails leap out of the grass and bite my ankles, some trees and rocks pass me.

My best 5k race time is 22 minutes 55 seconds. So not slow racing.

Ok, great. Thank you for clarifying that.

yes and no.

Yes if you want to get into the eternal jogger vs. runner discussion. Well you are out there, running, having our sadistic fun, so who cares?

Yes if at any given moment in time one of your feet is touching the mother Earth. Then you are not running you are walking. You can be fast or slow, but you need to be running. Walking is completely different story.

So while grandma is passing you, are you sure you are still running? if so, you are fine. You never know she can be one of those original no iPods, no Garmin's generation of runners.

So, if we fly, we can call ourselves runners?

I hope not! I finished the C25K program not long ago and am still very slow. Just ran my 2nd 5K and came in last place... it was a tiny race full of athletes, though.

oh, blackfonzie, let's run together! On my first-and-only race to date, I too came in last. On the outbound loop, it seemed that just as I was getting in a groove, kids began passing me coming back in. A guy who had had knee surgery the week before passed me. Even the police car, who followed the last runner (ahem, me), finally passed me on the last half block. However, everyone in the stands still cheered me when I crossed the finish line, got a medal, and drank a bottle of water.

I can honestly brag, though, that I came in first in my age group, since no one else my age ran. (I'm in the 55-59 group) And I'm still SLOW, but both feet aren't touching the ground at the same time.

Even though last, we are still winners!

This doesnt make any sense because most of the time you are running, one of your feet is on the ground.

Anyways, I agree with Tom. Slow down, keep a log. Youll see how much progress youve made!

I've heard it said here before...build strength and endurance first...speed will come later. I try to remember that when I want to push myself to go faster....

It just seems like we live in a society where we focus on numbers so we can compare ourselves... (weight/time/income/etc.)....and we usually feel worse about ourselves after we do.

tonight driving down the street we saw a man running.
"I said man he's flying"

"doesn't look that fast to me" hubby says

"next to me this guy is sprinting down the highway" I say

"well yeah, but your not a track star" Hubby says

(neither is this man who looks like he's covering some distance..and fast..same pace as our car in traffic.)

"I can run 3 miles now yeah!" I quote my favorite commercial

Point is I may be slow but I can run slow forever now! You won't always be so slow...and eventually you'll learn the pleasure of the box of speeds.
More importantly you won't say "I tried running once" "You'll say, yeah, I'm a runner

Since Long Run Nick hasn't made his appearance yet I'll paraphrase him with nothing 'kills the new runner like trying to hard for speed.'
