Ex-Smokers support week before Thanksgiving

I thought it might be time for a new week. We seem to always start late! Maybe we'll so chunks of time instead!

Next week officially kicks off the Holiday Season! This can be a tough time for former smokers with all the parties and cocktails and food. This is a time we will really need to lean on each other. Also, many new people will be making New Year's resolutions soon that involve quitting smoking and starting an exersice program. Let's get through this time ourselves so we can be support for the new ex-smokers among us. Whether we've been quit for years, months or days we can be helpful to lots of people. Newer quitters can relate with recent stories of how hard the first few days and weeks are. Those of us who quit a long time ago can provide words of wisdom to help through the tough times of temptation.

Have a great week everyone!

Re: Ex-Smokers support week before Thanksgiving
Ah, the holidays. I gotta tell you, it's been 86 days since I had a cigarette. I know I'm at the point where I only crave the emotional attachment to ciagarettes, not the actual nicotine, but man oh man did I ever want a couple this weekend.
But I didn't smoke.
So, I'm meeting my girlfriends for dinner tonight to celebrate the non-smoking. And I'm running a 10K on Thanksgiving! A 10K. I used to get wheezy walking up the stairs and now I'm running a 10K in a little over a week.

Kris-How was movie night? I know you were nervous about being there with the smokers.
Patrica-If you find your way to this link, just let go of the 3 you smoked. I agree with Kris, tear up the leftovers, run them under water, rip them into shreds. 3 cigs is better than 30, right?
Cajn-How's the quitting coming? Week 1 down, right?

Everyone else, how's it going? Any good quitting stories?Keep on quitting everyone. Take it a minute at a time, an hour, a day at a time. Just keep quitting!

Re: Ex-Smokers support week before Thanksgiving
So, I quit smoking in Aug. , Been doing great!!! My wife tells me we're going to Syracuse NY for the Holiday so we won't have to go to her parents who are both big chain smokers that smoke inside their house. I'm thinking it's a long drive but cool, no temptations. Now she informs me that we have to pick up her folks and bring them to NY with us!!! Not only will they want to smoke in the car ( which we won't allow ) but her sister allows them to smoke in her house!! ( even though no one in her house smokes )

Ok just had to vent:-) Good luck to all through the Holiday season. The best gift of all is a new lease on life!!

Re: Ex-Smokers support week before Thanksgiving
Kris- Okay, I understand. Almost harder than hanging out with other smokers, huh?

Andyb-Good luck with your trip! Don't let the in-laws get you down. You're a non-smoker now. Just keep telling yourself that. I quit in August, too, on the 20th. When was your quit day? You're coming up on 3 months or have past it depending on the quit day. Good for you! Celebrate that!

I am an ex-smoker who runs too! Just remeber when you are around smokers that it is YOUR quit. Not their's it is your quit and we cannot base how we feel on them, I do not get mad at smokers, I actually feel sorry for them, it is an addiction so let it be..After all if we could talk someone into quitting nobody on this earth would smoke, live and let live
take care you guys are really inspiring

Hey guys! Kris, thanks for starting the post, I got super busy over the weekend and never made it on, I'm just now updating my running log with the weekends runs! Everyone is doing so well! Where are our new quitters? We're here to help so if the weekend didn't go well, let us know! We're here to support you not hurt you! Quitting was the hardest thing I've ever done and it took many tries to make it to where I am! Don't give up on yourself!

Nice job drayzimplode!

I'm around day 50 (not sure exactly). I'm still getting pretty bad cravings, but they are coming less frequently. Instead of every second of every day, it's only about every couple hours now that I think about it wanting a smoke.

That's something.

Re: Ex-Smokers support week before Thanksgiving
I have a question. obviously at Day 4 in quitting, I am having some concentration problems right now. I am running or walking everyday for the past 4 days just to let some stress out. I am on the end of Week 3 of C25K. I am having a really hard time running it. Trying to concentration on the 1.5 min and 3 min intervals is making it hard to run. Tonight I just said to **** with it, and just ran about what I thought the time might be then walked then ran again. It felt better to run that way. Any suggestions on how to get back on track so I can move to Week 4?

Re: Ex-Smokers support week before Thanksgiving
megs411 I quit on Aug. 19th. The day after my wifes first Triathalon. ( sprint ) It was the motivation to get me running. Yes, I do consider myself a non-smoker now, no question there. I feel great!! Still not looking forward to the seven hour drive with the inlaws :-(

Again, I must say how much I enjoy this site. The support, camradrie, help, and humor is just awesome!! Thanks to all.

Re: Ex-Smokers support week before Thanksgiving
Congrats to all of you! I just celebrated 5 years smoke free this past Saturday and the time has flown! I did not start exercising until this past October, so you all are doing a great job by running!

Keep it up!

Some hints:

Pay attention to what the non-smokers are doing vs. looking at the smokers. Adopt a mantra "smoking is bad, quitting is good" and say it over and over to yourself. If you have a craving, brush your teeth.

Re: Ex-Smokers support week before Thanksgiving
Drayz- Great job on Day 4! It just gets easier and easier, I promise. I agree with Kris, try the podcast. I found that once I got to the straight running it was so much easier than the walking intervals with running. Good luck and stop by for support whenever you need it.

Andy- Almost three months of no smoking!!! Good for you!!! I'm impressed that your wife did a triathalon. My mother, sister and I are doing a sprint as a relay. Mom's swimming, sis is riding the bike, and I'm the runner. I can't imagine doing all THREE! :)

Jen-Glad you found this thread. How was your weekend? Sounds like you were busy. :)

I'm with Jen, all ex-smokers, soon to be ex-smokers, or people who smoke and just are thinking about quitting feel free to stop by. We support, we don't judge.
Good luck with the quitting!
