Ex-Smokers Support Thanksgiving Week

I thought I would start this weeks thread since you guys helped me so much get through the first week of not smoking. I am on Day 9, and going strong. With the holidays rapidly approaching the temptations can get hard, especially if your family members smoke. But I know we all can do.

I am on my repeat of Week 3 and today was day 2. I finally got the 3 minutes on both section. I appreciate all the support everyone here has given. What a great community.

Dray-Good job on Day 9, you're almost in the double digits! I agree, meals with family members that smoke are always tough, but we can do it!

Good luck with the running!

Well... I had a slip-up this weekend. **** alcohol. My lungs hurt Sunday morning and now I'm back on track. Run 3.5 this morning and have no desire to smoke. Back on the wagon after a minor mishap. 10K on Thanksgiving!

Re: Ex-Smokers Support Thanksgiving Week
quit smoking almost 2 months ago!!! didnt really notice the difference at first but after about 3 weeks my breathing got sooooooo much better!

slipped up once too.......as a result of alcohol, such is life.

i think most people slip up at least once so dont kick yourself too much. next time you feel like having one just remember how silly you feel the next day!!

for me the cravings havent gone completely but it does get easier.

good luck and keep it up!

I almost slipped up myself when I first quit. I was doing alright at a barbeque until alot of smokers started showing up. After several beers and all those smokers I told myself I can have just one. The moment I said that I got up and left.

My suggestion is until you have a good handle on not smoking stay away from other smokers while drinking that is definately your most vulnerable moment.

I have been not going to bars where smoking is allowed. In January, every bar goes to no smoking. YAY!!! That has helped motivate me to quit now. With it being cold, I have been super psyched about not smoking. And I have been warmer as well.

I never really wanted to quit because I was a social smoker. Always had to have someone with me while I smoked. I like the conversation and smoking was so relaxing. It wasn't until I quit that I realized I was more relaxed after the withdraws went away. No more smokers cough yay.

Hi Ex Smokers! You all are doing a great job. I have been lurking but not participating. I figure if I keep reading about the problems and successes that it will eventually take for me. Hope you don't mind my lurking and occassional post.

Re: Ex-Smokers Support Thanksgiving Week
Hi all!! The occasional slip-up not too long after qitting is almost to be expected. As long as you don't let it get you down it's okay. By that I mean not letting the slip up frustrate you so much that you just go back to full on smoking. Just say to yourself "Okay I had one (or two for seven) but I am still quitting. That was one day. Today is NOT that day."

Many times you cannot avoid smokers; they may be family or other company you need to be with. Going out for drinks with friends may be hard. While I generally don't believe the gov't need to be making laws regarding individual choices, I have come to enjoy the no smoking in restaurants/bars law. If only for the ability to have a drink without being allowed to smoke. (I'd still personally vote against such measures, but that's a whole 'nothr thing.)

Enjoy your Thanksgiving everyone! I am spending 3 days/nights baking up a storm. Pie for the kids' contest, bread for too many things (apparently it was special requested by many people; it goes to the adage if you don't want to do something, don't do it well). Turkey Thursday and I don't even know what else. I refuse to cook on Friday. I won't even toast anything!!

Re: Ex-Smokers Support Thanksgiving Week
Hello to all you newly non-smokers!!!! I'm new to the site, to running, and not quite so new to not smoking. I quit 6 months ago to the day. I didn't go cold turkey as most of you may have. I really had no intention of quitting. It was my husband that wanted it. For 2 years i would sneak smoking. (only doing it when i wasn't at home or with him and always blaming the other person) Then someone at work told me about Chantix and how it worked for her. I'd tried the Zyban a couple of different times and it never worked for me, but i thought what the heck...if it works great if not i didn't really care cuz i liked smoking anyways. Well much to my surprize i had quit after 1 week on the meds and stopped taking them all together after 1 month. I have not slipped up once nor did i have a desire to. I even had my 20 year h.s. reunion and didn't cheat! I even told myself before the party...if i was going to cheat, this reunion would be the "ok" time to do it and i didn't!!!! So if Chantix is an option for anyone who is having a real difficult time quitting, i would recommend it all the way. I wish everyone great success and happy running!!!!!

A~

Chantix is great. It has really helped me quit.
