Re: Ex-Smokers Support Thanksgiving Week
Today is my Three Month Anniversary. Three months ago to the day I woke up and went through my daily routine without a cigarette. And I thought I would never make it... I finished my lunch that day and actually stood up to go outside and smoke a cigarette. It physically hurt to sit back down without having one.

The first week I had my ups and downs, mostly downs. I could've killed someone with my bare hands. The second week was slightly better. After 21 days of not smoking my mom got sick and I had to take her to the emergency room. On my way home from the hospital I called up a friend, asked her not to judge me and asked if I could come over and bum a smoke. I debated with myself the entire drive over to her house and by the time I got there I didn't need the cigarette anymore. I started running shortly afterwards and found I liked being able to breathe without coughing.

The second month was a relatively smooth one until I hung out with my sister, who unbeknownst to me had given up on not smoking. I watched her pull out her pack and put one to her lips and I missed it. Oh, how I missed that feeling. I missed that connection we had, we used to go otuside and smoke together and talk about our days. I almost bummed one from her, but changed my mind at the last minute.

Two days ago, while searching under my passenger seat for a pen, I found a half a pack of cigarettes. Marlboro Ultra Light 100's. I sat in the Wal-Mart parking lot holding that half a pack for a good five minutes debating the pros and cons of smoking before I opened up a bottle of water and very carefully dropped each one into it. I then threw the bottle away.

But, I'm still a quitter. After three months and countless temptaion (did I mention my best friend smokes the EXACT SAME BRAND I used to smoke?) I'm still a quitter. If it's been a day for you, a week, whatever, just keep it up. It's worth it.

Have a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Anyone racing that day?

Meg--

congrats that is so great. i can't imagine what i will feel like when i haven't smoked for three months. I already feel great at about 2 weeks! 2 weeks, i mean wow. My sister smokes too and I politely asked her not to smoke around me when I went over to her place. She was very cool about it. But I did not stay long.
I am doing a 1 miler on Thanksgiving because that is what they offer in my area. I am walking with a friend who is recovering from an injury. It will be a blast. Never would I even think to do this before. Running and exercise are now my new loves.

Have a good thanksgiving everyone. And thanks to everyone for all the support. I could not have made it through without these threads.

Lots of Love and Luck

D

Re: Ex-Smokers Support Thanksgiving Week
Okay I think I am about ready to join you guys. I am a closet smoker. I do not smoke at work or around anyone I know (just a few family members) so I don't smoke a lot, but I can't seem to quit. I started running with the C25K at the end of July thinking that might be what I needed to get me to quit. I was halfway hoping I would have to quit to run, but I am running just fine without quiting although I am sure I would do better without the smoking. I would like to run a marathon someday and it would be AWFUL if I had to stop in the middle for a smoke! So I finally confessed to my Dr that I smoke and need to quit- she is going to give me a prescription for zyban (my plan doesn't cover the new med) after I get some lab work done. So my lab work should be done by next week, and the prescription should start soon after and I should be ready to quit. SO to make a long story short, I am a runner, and a smoker, but looking forward to setting my quit day and I am sure I will need lots of support!

Today is officially 2 weeks since I quit. I did pretty good yesterday. Smoke free. Did the mile turkey trot and did not come in last. It was all around a great day.

Yay Dray with your TWO WEEKS OF NOT SMOKING!!! Pat yourself on the back for that one! That is amazing!

Did anyone run yesterday? I ran my first race, a 10K, and just LOVED it! I can't wait until I can run another one!
