jogging stroller and pace

I'm looking for some input from anyone who has used a jogging stroller. I am running in my very first 5K Thanksgiving morning. Currently I can run 2-2.5 miles at a 12 to 12:30 pace without pushing it. I've been running on and off for almost a year, I was running over 3 miles back in the spring, started back up again last month and that is where I'm at now.

Anyway, I am excited about running this 5K and am curious how much pushing a 20lb baby and stroller will affect my time. I'd like my first race to be without the stroller, so I have a 'first 5k" time to improve on, but I really have no other option for the baby.

So my question is, what have you found is the difference between your stroller/non-stroller paces? I'm curious what my 'real' 5K pace would be. Thanks!

muddy,
First of all, are you certain that the race organizers will allow jogging strollers? Many don?t. In my day of pushing I?d often push one of my kids in a race. If there wasn?t anything advertised about allowing strollers or not, I?d just discreetly do it, starting at the back of the pack so that there wouldn?t be any disgruntled runners. Believe it or not, pushing the stroller didn?t really slow me down at all. In fact, sometimes I?d surprise myself and run faster than usual?even placing in my age group a few times. The reason I think that is, is because I?d over-compensate for the stroller weight/resistance and having to start at the back of the pack. The only embarrassing problem I had was that as my kids got older and began to talk...in races they?d talk to the slower runners as I worked my way through the pack. Kids will be kids and they?d say stuff like ?Why aren?t you running as fast as my dad mister?? or ?Look at that lady?s butt jiggle as she runs daddy.?
