Switching to using orthotics...

Curious when you switched to using orthotics if you switched the type of shoes you use?

Do you take your store bought insert out of the shoe?

Did the orthotics cause you to have shin splints?

I am a slight overpronator. I hurt my feet last spring, and got styrofoam white cushion inserts. They helped my feet so much, doc recommends orthotics. I was training for fall marathon, 50 mpw, when I got tendonitis in left leg. Took 5 weeks off because thought it was a SF. During time off I got the orthotics and got my feet use to walking in them.

Started running with orthotics, 3 mpw, 8 mpw, 12mpw, and now at about 15 mpw. I know I broke the 10% rule, but thought with my base I'd be fine.

Now I think my right leg has a shin splint. (I've never had shin splints running, only during kickboxing where we did lots of jumping jacks.)

I am suspicious of these darn orthotics. I used the old cushion inserts tonight and they seemed to put less stress on my leg. Open for opinions. Do the orthotics need an adjustment? Did I not give my legs enough time to adjust to running with orthotics? Running too much too soon?

Re: Switching to using orthotics...
Hi Bugs,

I finally broke down and bought custom orthotics when I decided to train for a marathon. I had terrible shin splints prior to doing that. I did take the insert out of my shoe, and took the orthotic with me to the running store to be fitted for the correct shoe. I am an overpronater too.

The most frustrating part was gradually breaking them in. I would get cramps in my feet as I was adjusting. I started by running 1 mile, then switching to the factory inserts. Then 1.5 miles, etc. It was very tedious and I thought I they would be a waste of money. Once I broke them in, they have been great ever since and i'm shin splint free! Also got rid of some low back issues, that was a bonus.

I certainly cannot tell you if that is what caused your shin splint, but if I were betting gal I would think you did too much too soon. Although you had a nice base, your orthotics completely changed your body mechanics, so it's almost like you have to get a base in your orthotic. The reason the old insert felt good is b/c you are used to that. While breaking mine in, they would feel great when I first put them on, then I would start running and they would start to make my feet ache. I would switch after the prescribed time and it felt good to use the factory insert. Now it feels weird to NOT wear the orthotic.

I really believe they helped me train for my marathon, which I successfully completed

Just my 2 cents...

oh, and good luck!

Re: Switching to using orthotics...
I have a totally different take on this. I live in a country (India) where we dont get orthotics. Nobody makes them.

I have sufferred from shin splints for the last 1 year. I have severe over-pronating flat feet. After endless research and trying on different MC / stability shoes, doing shin strengthning exercises (http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/0161.htm) etc....I have come to a conclusion that I run wrong (I mean with incorrect form).

I have been working on improving my form for the last 3 months, have reduced my mileage, take walking breaks and am gradually building up mileage. My shin pain has reduced considerably.

Some fundamental changes I have made:

1. Converting from heel strike to forefoot / midfoot strike
2. Research and read abut efficient running sytles - Chi Running, Pose tech, Evolution Running, Stride Mechanics etc.
3. Read the book on efficient running by www.gordonpirie.com[/URL" target="_blank">
4. Maintain a fast cadence of 180

There is a school of though that believes orthotics are crutches. I do not subscribe to it entirely, as I believe they have a place for those with severe bio mechanical problems.

However, it is very important to run with correct form. Please also read these messages:
