Pre-race fuel?

I'm doing a half-marathon on Sunday and I was wondering what most people eat before the race? I'm not sure if I should throw in a small Powerbar.. or just fuel up with some gel.
Help would be great, thanks!

Don't do anything that you haven't done in training - no new shoes, no new clothes, no new food. Just do what you did before your long runs.

Ditto what Iontach said, and I'll add:

Fuel with what ever you fueled with for your long runs during training.

There is no need to eat before a half marathon. Thirteen miles will not be enough mileage to push you anywhere near the point of glycogen depletion. If you are used to eating before you run and it doesn't cause any gastric distress then you may as well do the same on race day. If not, then just make sure you are well hydrated and you'll be fine.

Not so sure about that, especially in the absence of other information.

13.1 miles can take someone 2.5 hours @ a 12 - 12:15 pace, which many folks, especially here in the Newbie section is a pace they run.

If someone has not been eating properly in the day/days leading up to the race, add a 2.5 hour work out, other conditions (hills, etc), glycogen stores could be an issue.

I seem to feel best if I have something like a banana and most of a bottle of gatorade about 45 minutes before the race.

I tend to have stomach issues with the powerbars.

As figbash said, not sure it matters too much but I think mentally I feel better with a little something in my stomach.

The 2.5 hour 12-12:15 pace scenario that you describe will burn little in the way of glycogen. A run at that pace and duration is fueled more by fat than carbohydrates. As your pace goes down the percentage of fat that you burn goes up. Walking for instance burns almost 100% fat. Of course poor eating habits could be an issue but unless someone is purposely restricting carbs as in a low carb diet, there will be plenty of fuel to complete a half marathon. A possible exception would be someone who is very fast as in an elite runner.
