Thanks to everyone for all the Garmin info.

Did 3 miles tonight on the treadmill and then about 20 minutes with the weight machines. Next went to the blood bank and am now home for dinner, laundry, dishes and lunch packing. It's really great now that the kiddies are grown and out on their own...we have such relaxing evenings. lol

The schedule says 5 miles for me tomorrow. Sure wish it was still spring, summer or fall. Five miles takes me forever on a treadmill and sometimes I think that my brain gets numb. But I know that I need to keep a good base and work to increase my pace this winter if I am thinking of doing a half marathon in April.

Good runs to all,
wbertha

hey all, out of town on business but need to check in. No run today but hopefully 7-8 miles tomorrow and then out of town again on Thursday. This will be my toughest week to run.

Kim: that is awesome that you completed the half and is something to be proud of. Are you training differently?

meg: you have a great attitude on the smoking. when you think about running or smoking the choice is obvious. Congrats.

Simon: I wish to complete the 1/2 as a goal. What I'm shooting for is 2 hours, but the first one anything will be great. So far my long run is 9.1 miles but I'm running out of steam at the 9:00 minute mile pace.

Joe: anything you learned from your last 1/2 that you are doing different? Did you have any gels or liquids during the race?

wbertha: good luck on the 205 you will love it. I agree on the wish for warmer weather but we are looking at a long winter ahead.

take care and keep pushing!

Just a quick hello before I'm off to bed so I can get up early in the a.m. to run - have 4M planned again (as I ran 3M last time & planned on 4M - but I left the house late & had to get back! Excuses, excuses, eh??).

HEY CAROL & WBERTHA - I am also considering the "Big D" HM in April - in fact, the day of the race is my birthday, so that would be cool!! Definitely let me know when/if you sign up for the race!

Carol, didn't you also mention the Cowtown HM in Ft. Worth late Feb.?? I am quite partial to Ft. Worth myself (used to live there!) - just wondering about the hilly terrain, as I now live in a Houston suburb that is almost totally flat! April looks more realistic from a training standpoint for me - what do you think the weather will be like then - a bit hot? Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

MONNIK - Have missed you - glad to hear you're better - good for you!

PEG - Congrats on the great-sounding job - hope you were happy to be back today! What a good feeling - you're so brave & should be proud of yourself from leaving a previously bad situation.

JOE, MISSWENDY, RUNJR & KEVIN - No cold weather gear yet - I do have one measley (sp?) pair of tights and one long-sleeved dry-fit shirt - they certainly work fine, just have to keep washing them!

KIM - TOO SWEET about the first love/now husband - CONGRATS! I still dream about my highschool BF - was truly my first love -guess you never quite forget that one, do you? OMG! BTW, my DH happens to be my college sweetheart - was a better choice for me in the long run!

OK - on that note - HELLO to everyone else - WELCOME new folks (MEG and MARA40THON)...gotta run (off to sleep now!).

Hi all. I had a lousy day at work today and it looked like I would miss my run too, but did manage to get it in 3.5m today, so feel better already. Great to see you all doing well. I think I have selected my half and have marked it on the calendar for May 4. Should be plenty of time to prepare. Am doing the Santa Shuffle 5k on Saturday. It is supposed to snow.
Keep on running.

Hiya halfers! Just waiting for breakfast to digest before heading out for 3 miles. Monday - ran 3, Tuesday - ran 1.7 and walked 2 with friend and dogs. This thread goes so fast I can't keep up with you guys....a good metaphor for my running .

slavetodogs, I love your member name! I may have missed it, but what kind of dogs are you slave to, and do they run with you? We have four, but only one that can run very far.

Ispence and wbertha, wouldn't it be cool to meet up at the Big D or the Cowtown? And running a 1/2 on your birthday....very cool! I'll check in with my friend re: the Cowtown terrain. I've run a couple of 5K's in Ft. Worth that were pretty flat, but the 1/2 course may be a different story.

runjr, good luck with getting those runs in on a heavy travel week!

misswendy, log looks good. Your long run is already pretty long!

Joe, looks like you're racking up the miles too. I looked at your "Summary" column and misread it as "Sunday" and thought, dang...his long runs are 18 miles! Think I may need some glasses You're getting geared up for the Cowboys tomorrow I trust!

Shelila, good to see you popping in! Hope you are doing well.

NCsunshine, wow...you have a housefull at times. Good plan on building your base. Also congrats on your first HM!!!

SimonR, good to see you as well.

Megs, are you using Hal Higdon's Novice Half plan? That's what I'm doing right now and it has cross training before the long run. Wish I could tell you how well it works, but it's new to me as well.

Kathy, I used to run some at lunch and it worked out OK for me. Our office was pretty casual and I was our wellness group leader, so me sweating was actually a little proof of practicing what I preached. I also really liked having that time during the middle of the day away from the office. More than likely, you will be the one to notice more than anyone else, so I say go for it.

Guess it's time for me to shut up and run now!

Later.....

hmm, I'm surprised not to be reading much about the Cowboys-Packers (or is that Packers-Cowboys?) game on this thread--everyone's too busy running! I have a question though--heard this morning that it's on the NFL Network, which isn't part of our cable package and only available if you have their high def box. Anyone know if a regular network is carrying it? I heard it's blacked out in most of WI.

tommashe, I think my DD#2 signed up for the Indy mini, so maybe I'll do the 5k (don't think I could be ready for a half by then), or maybe volunteer at it.

misswendy, hope the plumber gets there soon! I'm always inclined to pack up and move when there's a serious plumbing problem--I just don't deal with that well.

spicegeek, thanks for posting on your injury. It may help others rethink "running through" the pain vs. having it checked out. Recover fully!

Peg, glad to hear about the new job, and Chuck, good news from the doctor!

NCSunshine, great job on your HM! I'm a little jealous that your DD is so close... mine are both in grad school now, one 240 miles away, and the other one 10x that far! But they both came home for TG, which was great.

I still seem to be recovering from the long weekend, though, and have only gotten 2 1-milers in... got to start getting to bed earlier again! Tomorrow should be better. All the great runs people are posting here is inspiring!

Happy hump day, everyone!

Good morning everyone! I overslept this morning, so I'll be doing a night run tonight. I'm okay with it, I like running in the evenings. I'm not really a morning person until after I've had my coffee.

wbertha- I agree with you, the TM takes forever. You don't run outside in the winter? I'm still waiting on my cold weather gear to arrive, I've got some stuff, but I'm really excited about the pants I have coming. Funny how much my life has changed that I'm excited about running pants coming in the mail.

Carol40- I am doing Hal Higdon's novice program. I'm a little concerned that the longest run is 10 miles. Think that'll have us prepared for a 13 mile run? I also do a water aerobics class three days a week, which I just adore. What HM are you running?

I was reading a great article about what people eat or drink during long runs, like marathons, for energy. Anyone eat anything out of the ordinary? I'm having a hard time deciding what to eat/drink. The thought of those gel packs makes me slightly nauseated just thinking about them. Anyone have any strong feelings either way with those or anything else?

Morning everyone. I trust you slept well.

Joe - Movie, hmmmmmmmmm.... I'm sure there are lots and lots of people who would love to see that. But then again, maybe not. Thanks on the icon. My husband calls me Sunshine and the sunflower was the closest thing to that.

Runjr - I feel that I didn't train properly for my HM. Roughly 4 years ago I was a solid everyday runner - between 3 and 5 miles everyday. Not long after that I lost interest due to bad marriage and divorce. Now that I'm back on track personally, my interest has returned. I'm looking at different training plans and have noticed most here use Hal Higdon's programs. I'm thinking of taking a look at those.

Laurel - Wow, college sweetheart. Sometimes you just never know how things are going to turn out. My DH married his high school sweetheart and struggled the whole 20 or so years they were married. I married 2 others before him looking for the very thing we now have. If only we knew then what we know now. Oh well, nothing I can do about it now. I just wake up every morning and count the blessings. How was your run?

Chuck - haven't heard from you in a while. Everything okay?

Peg - can't wait to hear how D#2 at work was? Just as fun I bet.

Cold weather gear??? I don't really have that much as I haven't really needed it yet. Most of what I have either came from Wallymart or Tar Zhay.

Slavetodogs - good luck on the Santa Shuffle 5K. How cool would it be to run in the snow. I hope we get snow this year. It's been several years since we've seen the white stuff. Shoot what am I saying, I just wish it would get cold here. Kill off some of these bugs!

Misswendy - hope that plumber gets there soon. My BIL is a plumber. The way the building market is here, he's putting in 12 hour days sometimes more. We haven't had any rain, so there have basically been no breaks in the building industry.

Everyone out there who can run on a DM - YOU ROCK! I tried it once. That dang thing shot me off the back of it like I was a rocket! Now anytime I'm on it (once or twice a year) I have to hold on. It's embarassing. If I have to do cardio inside, I use the stair master.

That's about it for now. Gotta get some work in. Going out of town tomorrow for a long weekend (in more ways than one).

Have a great day everyone.

Allright Misswendy! I'm a fan of tar zhay too, and when they get too pricey for me Wal Mart it is! Kohl's is another favorite, though I don't think I've gotten any running gear there. Picked up some great cropped pants for $2.80 though. I love a good bargain and hearing about others finding them too!

Megs, nice to see someone else doing Hal Higdon Novice! Water aerobics should be a nice compliment to running and minimize the stress on your body. When is your half? I picked HH Novice largely because it did not have a lot of higher mileage runs and incorporated cross training and weight lifting. I had the same thoughts as you about it before...will this be enough? But I got hurt just before I was supposed to be "peaking" (a relative term 'cause I'm not too speedy) this fall for my (supposed to be) first half marathon. Had to lay off running for 6 weeks. I was using a different training program and my long runs were up to 11 miles. Once it got to 10, I really felt like a few more miles in a race was very doable. Goal #1 this time for me is to make it to the starting line healthy. My "Plan A" half is the Cowtown in late February. My "Plan B" or possibly additional half, especially if it means meeting a few cool runners, is the Big D in early April. Haven't signed up yet...still a little stung from having prepaid for the two halfs I didn't get to run

Macd -- must not be too much chatter about the game because we are all united as Cowboys fans, right?

NC -- I hear you on the treadmill. I use one when I have to, but they scare me too. The really good ones at the gym (Woodway, I think), tend to trip me when I stop running and start walking. I use the less cushy ones and they don't seem to reach out and trip me as much.

Very steady 3 miles this morning (10:58, 10:59, 11:03). Good news is that my hip has held up to 3 days in a row that included at least some running. Also a beautiful day with the leaves falling and floating to the ground. Would be nice to "be the leaf" on the floating part! Weights tonight, rest tomorrow, cross train Friday. Good runs and rests to to you all!

I haven't had time to read posts yet, so I'll do that later this afternoon. Just wanted to say that I ran an easy, SLOW 2 last night and am experiencing hip pain again. Son of a - !

So I'm going to go to the doctor. I guess I have no other choice. I'm so bummed about it, I feel almost depressed. Is that dorky or what?

monnik - sorry to hear you have pain again - does it hurt to move it or to put weight on it ? hopping / standing on one leg or when lifting it as if you were doing an exagerated march ?

I could still just be imflamation - don`t be afraid to take and anti inflamatory - I had a similar issue some time back where I was getting pain that would show up when I had cooled down after running - I would stiffen up while sitting - once I got moviong againt he pain would lessen - 2 weeks off then ice and Aleive after running finally resoved the issue.

And yes .. trust me - it is quite ok to feel depressed - you have my whole hearted sympathy - but trust me on this - I will take 1 month of no running but being able to use the x trainer . bike and still do all my weight training over the past 2 months of being off most all cardio ANY day - take it easy now - you wil be back running sooner - go to the doc - ask for an MRI if you can
