Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 25th
HI everyone, did some pilates this morning and then did week 2 day 2 of the c25k with my friend this afternoon.

wbertha--I've never donated blood before but I have heard it does take alot out of you

ispence--I also suffer from flare-ups with my sciatica. self-diagnosed of course. Mine doesn't bother me while I run but at night if I'm on my right side, it will wake me up and I have to slowly move to my back and very slowly straighten out my leg. The pain usually goes away in just a couple of min. I try to do stretches after every run but sometimes its hard to get it done.

joe--hope your cowboys win tonight. Did you run today? Yes the garmin is up and running.

runjr--hope some nice weather comes your way, it was beautiful here today, a perfect run day

monnik--got my fingers crossed about good news at the doc monday

meg--glad I wasn't the only one fighting the wind. Today was awesome running weather. Go Figure

imogene--hop back on the wagan--we all want to bring the new year in feeling healthy and fit. Thats my moto right now, I haven't had any sweets or chocolate since Sun. I don't want to start off the new year feeling fat and dumpy.

spicegeek-- oh my gosh that sounds like an awesome race, I'm gonna go check it out, although I don't see me getting all the way to New York this year.

misswendy--3miles in 26 min. great time

macd--wouldn't that be cool. let me know if you decide to do it, I'm sure your dd and roommate probably run alot faster than me but it would be great to meet you. and I'd love to have someone to at least start out with. And you'd have 3 people to start out with. They all run at different speeds.

carol40--do you have a trainer or do you just do your own thing at the gym?

imogene--oh my gosh, your really fast also. thats like my 5k pace. It would be awesome to do an all women's half wouldn't it.

ok gotta go get some laundry done, DH took DD to the game tonight.

Thank god tomorrows friday.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 25th
Got 4.5 miles in today in 42 minutes. About 80degrees and humid today. I'm sure that it is actually only September. A productive run because it had a few pretty good hills. Definitely plan on running my 9 mile long run early Saturday on my flat course option. Just a quick poll for those interested in the NFL. How many here can actually get NFL Network and don't have to go out to see tonight's game. I am a longtime Tampa Bay fan, and old school Cowboys fan. It was great seeing Staubach at the coin flip tonight. Easily tonight's battle could happen again at the NFC title game.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 25th
OK - yea, well, um.....thanks for keeping me honest...NO, I didn't run again today! My alarm went off this a.m. and I turned it off w/o even registering that it had gone off & why. Guess I was pretty tired after the night awake the night prior to last. UGGH!

I will make no promises this time b/c that backfired yestrday & I'm a bit superstitious sometimes! I will plan to go again in the a.m. - will set the alarm & hopefully remember what it is for in the morning! I haven't run since MONDAY a.m. - craziness!

Sheila - thanks for the info on the sciatica. What kind of exercises/stretches are you doing? I'm wondering if I need PT for that & the IT band thing that I think is the reason for my intermittent knee pain I've had on lat. side of right patella while running & afterward sometimes.

Alrighty - I'll eventually give in like Monnik and go see a doc - we medical professionals are the worst at getting ourselves taken care of...we're used to taking care of everyone else...mommas are too...i'll do the right thing! Why is that so hard sometimes??

OK - gotta go do some dishes now - later!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 25th
Hi everyone.

So far two evening runs this week - 3 on Tuesday and 5 today. It's been nice and cool in the evening - 62 degrees for tonights run.

My son bought me an ipod shuffle for my birthday last month and I forgot to bring it on my run tonight - I felt naked without it. I didn't think I'd enjoy it as much as I do when he gave it to me.

Gels - I started eating Gel when hiking/backpacking and climbing above 10,000 feet because I lose my appetite at those elevations - I like Hammer Gel and Carb-Boom Gels - I try to stay away from the GU brand because it makes me sick to my stomach. Yes, drink plenty of water with them.

Thanks all for the input on lunchtime runs - I had not thought about the residual sweating - I guess I'm going to have to give it a try sometime soon and see how bad it feels to be sticky all afternoon.

I looked at Hal Higdon's program, but it has strength training involved and I just can't get into the weight lifting.

chamblin - those long days are tough - especially when it gets dark so early. I do sneak out early sometimes though to keep my sanity.

spicegeek - that More Marathon/Half Marathon sounds like a really good one - it must be fun running in Central Park.

Happy Running,
Kathy

hey everyone, well let me tell ya about my run. I started out and rand around the high school and then I ran through town made a big loop came back to the school and did 2 more loops for 5.6 miles in 58 mint.s. Nice easy run. A couple of nice hills in this run. I love running hills. It's nice not running in town, even at night I'm passing people running and just a breif wave is a pick me up ya know, kind of like a good job wave. Going for 3 either tomarow or saturday and then 8 this weekend LSD. That'll put me right where I was. Take that mister sit me back take it slow I'm to sick to run so I'll skip today bull **** !!!!! LOL I know I can do the 8 Just have to back the pace down a notch, listen to what my body says and train according to what my body will allow me to do .

Good running to all. I'm very happy to be back!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 25th
hi all, taking a break on the big game. I actually got home for a short time today and raced to the gym and got 4.4 miles in 37 minutes on the treadmill. Then traveled a few hours away for a couple of meetings and got home almost in time for the game start.

macd: not a great game in the first half, but you never know.? Still good TV for a Thursday night.

imogene: great run and fast pace.

Sheila: glad to hear the garmin is working out for you. I'm happy for Friday as well.

mara40thon: 80's and humid is a distant memory. The humid weather is the most fun for me to run in. We have winter storm warnings this weekend. The wind has been brutal for over a week.

kathy: nice running. I agree no ipod make the training runs tough. The only thing worse for me is no ipod and running on a treadmill.

which brings up a question, your next race will you use an ipod?

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 25th
Hey all - nearly missed my run last night as had to go food shopping and didn't get home until 7:30 - then my husband made me a big curry so was going to skip... about 9:15pm I was grouchy as anything (probably coz i've only ran once this week) so decided to go for a late one. 4.73 in 51:15 definitely harder having eaten only an hour before though but felt much happier after! Hey - addiction or what.... withdrawel symptoms!

Chuck - great to hear you are back to your former self

Sheila - no sweets or chocolate since Sunday? I'm impressed and wish I could say the same

Misswendy - I do the same when replying on here! Two sessions - one to read and one to type. Great runs by the way - you're really fast!

Laurel - don't you let that running slip too much... sometimes it's just so hard to fit everything in though isn't it

wbertha - sometimes I really wish I had a treadmill, but i'm just not sure where i'd put one!

Slave - hope the calves hold out for your race! Good luck

Mara40thon - great runs - keep it up and good luck with your 9!

Spicegeek - half in April sounds great! don't you go overdoing it now though will you

Joe - it's actually my 30th in January so mayby that Garmin isn't out of the question...

Monnik - good luck with the doctors - hope you get good news!

Meg - why not the Patriots... are they your arch enemies?

Imogene - welcome back

Kathy - I'm don't think i'm going to be doing the strength training bit of HH - will substitute with more fun activities such as canoeing

Runjr - hope you enjoyed the game - well done on fitting everything into your day

Anyway that's all from me... will report back on my 10K tomorrow!

Happy running!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 25th
YAY-I ran 3M this a.m.- felt GREAT!

The upside to not running for 3 days is that my knee feels OK. Perhaps my body knew I needed a break?? My long run is scheduled for tomorrow - I may move to Sunday - but if knee still feels good, want to go out as scheduled tomorrow.

Thanks, Cara, for the kind words! Good for you running last night - BRAVO! Yum - curry sounds delicious!!

Everybody have a FABULOUS FRIDAY - TGIF - it's been a rough week around here - glad it's almost done!

Smiles & Well-Wishes to ALL,
Laurel

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 25th
Nice 4 miles, Joe, in spite of having to work late. BTW, that's just wrong having to work late when the Cowboys are playing! Must confess, I fell asleep before the game was over though.

Shelia, I don't have a trainer. However, hubby and I did hire one a couple of years ago to re-introduce us to the gym, good form, etc. which was very helpful. I alternate 2 arm, shoulder or upper back exercises for every 1 core exercise, with a little light leg work thrown in. 12 to 15 different exercises, 12 X 3 sets of each, no particular order so I can avoid bottlenecks at the gym.

I'm not expert on the gels and such, but tried sport beans and a cliff shot block. Definitely prefer the sport beans and used them on a few training runs and in one race.

Was going to go to the gym this morning for X-training, but thinking I may rake leaves instead. Needs to be done, and I think it would count.

Happy Friday everyone!

joescoolagain...you at a waterstop in the womens marathon is such a funny thing to imagine....lol....good job getting in tht 4M

ispence...hope your knee stays ok. way to go with sneaking in 3! we had one of those nights recently where DS and DD were up playing at a weird hour. ugh!

chamblin...i get grouchy too when i dont run. husband that cooks is a great asset...turning thirty, i remember that. haha

runjr...the game was no fun to watch on the internet, either. way to go on your 4.4. fast....

chuck...GREAT run! love running in a neighborhood. yes, you can do your LSD (what does that stand for? i think you mean long run?) i like those 'good job' waves, too. most of mine come from construction workers. they say things like 'girl, i get more exercise just watchin you run!' haha how weird...

kathywing...lose your appetite? ive only ever been at a high altitude once (the alps on swiss/german border) and i ate plenty. haha. also, running in the evening is not something i like, because i dont get the chance. but you make it sound like something worth trying...

tommashe...great job running with a friend. and pilates? wow. i once pronounced it 'pilots' and everyone laughed at me. well, i havent wanted to do it since then...haha any excuse, huh?

maybe try to get in the 5 i missed earlier this week. or not. today is DH day off, so we like to hang out. (of course, he is with a coworker at this moment, as usual something always comes up....) DS is around too. well see. tomorrow is 8 and hopefully i'll runwith a group.

anyway, have a great day !
love to all

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 25th
Congrats to the Cowboys fans, condolences to the Packers fans, and no, don't have NFL network and didn't go to a sports bar, so I didn't actually see the game. Sorry to hear about Brett Favre, though. Tough way to go out, if he does. We are interested in the BIG 10 Network as well as NFL, so are looking into Direct TV. Any recs?

Lots of awesome runs posted--many fast people on this thread!

lspence, I have some problems with sciatica, mainly in my lower back, not down my leg, and mainly after I have to stand for a while--doesn't bother me running or walking. I do some low back stretches in the a.m. and that and the seat heater in my car on the way to work generally take care of it. If your pain is similar, let me know if you want the stretches.

I did a hill interval on the TM this a.m.--slow paced, but I was surprised it got up to 15% grade. My calves & butt felt that!

Definitely TGIF... great runs & a great weekend to all!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 25th
Hello All! I've been busy this week and haven't been able to keep up with posting. I've been running though, the latest being yesterday morning. I ran for an hour, just about 6 miles. Did a PR for time. Even though it was really cold (12 deg), I averaged just about 10:00/mi. I planned my route so the wind was more of a crosswind. I felt really strong throughout the entire run. I'll be doing an easy 35 min. this afternoon.

misswendy, good job keeping up with your runs nice 3 mi yesterday.

macd, yeah it's cold but if you're dressed right ya hardly even feel it. Or is that just the numbness...LOL!

carol40, I'm a Packer fan, watched the first half, and about half the 3rd quarter. We could've played better no doubt about it. But hey, maybe we'll play each other again in January.

imogene, Great Run, I'm dreaming of the day when I'll consider 8:30/mi slow.

Sheila, I'm contiually amazed at your mentoring your friend into running. Good for you!

mara40thon, good job on the 4-1/2 miles yesterday. I don't have NFL network, but I only live 40 miles from Milwaukee and I get the local station. Go Packers!

Laurel, I can relate to not wanting to get out of bed. This am. I wanted to get up and do my 35 min run and just rolled over for another hour. Once I did get up, I found an inch of new snow on the ground, so instead of running I shoveled. Great work on the 3 mi.

Kathy, good runs this week! I'm spoiled here at work. We have a fitness room & locker room w/shower. So I could do my shorter 30 min. runs at lunch and shower after.

Chuck, great job getting back into running! Yeah just take it 'slow and easy'. That's my coaches 'mantra'

runjr, great work getting the run in. No the first half wasn't very good was it. I think they did better in the second half, but I was sleeping by then.

Cara, good for you going out even if it's late! I usually run on as empty a stomach as possible. Although most of my runs are short <1 hour. The big exception is my LSD on Sunday afternoon. I'll usually have some lunch about 1-2hrs before my run.

Joe, Great 4 mi. yesterday! Yeah, how about them Cowboys! We'll see ya in January for the BIG game!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 25th
Hey everyone! So, I finally picked a marathon (still working on where to do my half marathon). I wanted to run a marathon before my thirtieth birthday and I found one in my area that's actually being run ON my thirthieth birthday. April 11, 2010. How cool is that? So, I've got some time to train, but I'm super pumped.

I've got a 3 miler today, cross training tomorrow (gotta love water aerobics) and a 5 mile run on Sunday. Hope everyone has a great weekend and great runs!

Misswendy- Glad to hear someone else like Peyton. It's a constant battle amongst my friends.

Sheila- Today, when I'm scheduled to run outside, it's windy again. I feel like I just can't win. And tomorrow is a cross training day which means it'll be sunny and not windy. Sheesh. Although, there is a certain sense of accomplishment in managing a run against that strong of wind. I feel like Rocky making it up those steps!

Laurel- Sorry to hear about the pain. I hope it gets better! I am knocking on wood as my worst injury so far has been a foot cramp in the middle of a run. Good luck with seeing a doctor!

Kathy- I love using my ipod shuffle during my runs. It's so light it doesn't even feel like I have anything clipped to my pants/shirt/pocket. I like Hal Higdon's workout so far, but then again, I love weights.

Cara- Why not the Patriots? Number one reason is because up until last year (GO COLTS) the Patriots always knocked my beloved Colts (GO COLTS) out of the playoffs (GO COLTS). And also, Tom Brady went to the University of Michigan and here in Michigan everyone worships the ground he walks on, so I don't like him a little for that, I've always liked to go against the crowd. But, unfortunately with the combo of Tom Brady and flippin' Moss I think my beloved Colts (GO COLTS) are going to lose to them...again. (GO COLTS). Glad you got out and ran anyways. I find myself arguing with myself (it's too cold, too windy, too wet, etc, etc) until eventually I cave and run and then I feel so good I wonder what the big deal was getting out there.

macd- My cable includes the Big 10 Network (woo-hoo) but no NFL network (Boo). Oh well, gives me an excuse to hit the local pub and yell at their t.v.s Good job with the TM!

Joe- Speaking of checking online, the Colts game wasn't televised in my area on Thanksgiving except on the NFL network, so I actually sat at the table with friends and family and played cards AND had my laptop right next me following the game. Yup, definately obsessed. Sports beans were nice, but I think I've worked up the courage to try a gel. Thanks for the tips.

kevee- Good job on the 10 minute miles!! That's my goal, to run 10 minute miles. Good for you!
