Ex-Smokers Support 11/26 - 12/2

So how has the month of November treated everyone? How are all our quitters doing? I had a very interesting thanksgiving. We were going over to my father in-law's house for the day, he smokes cigars his financee smokes Newports. Her family was coming up which consisted of 2 brothers and a sister, all smokers. Everyone quit but one person... so instead of all of us spending time outside on the deck smoking we played the piano and guitar and sang songs and drank wine! It was such a different experience!

Jen- Sounds like a great way to not smoke. I'm glad that you have all those non-smokers to hang out with.

The holidays were easy for me. Ran a 10K race on Thanksgiving morning, then just hung out with my grandpa for the day. I did go to a party on Saturday with all my friends and they ALL smoke so that was a little stressful, but I just kept thinking how bad it smelled and how gross it was and I was okay.

So, I did run my first 10K and I started training to do a HM in the spring. I'm hoping to combine it with a little mini-vacation, maybe go someplace warm and run a half marathon. Anyone doing anything like that?

Hope everyone stuck to the quitting!

Well I hope everyones holiday was a good one. Mine was alright. For those of you following the story, you might remember I had to drive my two heavy smoking inlaws and a step sister 5+ hrs. to Syracuse NY. WOW what a trip. Actually trip out wasn't all bad, but the sister in NY actually let her parents smoke in her house!!! None of her family smokes, and in fact are all very athletic types. So , the family of 5 non- smokers, my wife and I ( remeber I quit in Aug.) and the step sister had to put up with a room full of smoke just for the parents. WHATEVER.. My wife also caught them smoking in our car on the trip home!!

In closing let me just say that after all that it has only solidified my resolve to NEVER again smoke another cigarette.

Andy

I am very glad Thanksgiving weekend is OVER. It was a lot of food, a lot of drinking, and a lot of jumping around and trying to entertain my boyfriend's parents. PHEW.

I did run a 10K on Thanksgiving morning and PRed. That was nice.

I did smoke a few ciggs when I was WASTED Friday night. That was naughty.

Now I am back into my normal groove of eating healthy, working out like a feen, and NOT SMOKING. Let's just see if I can keep this streak going for a month or more.

Hey everybody! Hang in there!! This week is my 1 year anniversary since I quit! A whole year w/o 1 slip-up! Woo-Hoo! Thanksgiving was spent w/a room full of non-smokers (several reformed smokers), sans 1, & he didn't even take one cigarette break during the entire afternoon-evening! There wasn't anybody to go outside with so, he stayed in the house w/everybody else! I still can't get any of them to go run w/me, but Hey! We're makin' progress !

Cajn- Great work! Keep kicking butt! Did you have a race on Thanksgiving?

fragileknees- Just get back on the ball. We all have slip ups. Keep quitting! And keep running. How's that going for ya?

mtnchk1- Congrats on a year of non-smoking. We're all working our way towards goals like that! In about nine months I'll be in the same boat as you.

Re: Ex-Smokers Support 11/26 - 12/2
Today is day 18 and I have never felt better than I feel today. The walk to class was really good. not out of breath not smelling like smoke. just listening to music and walking through the cold.

Its weird, now i could never imagine smoking and hold the same mindset i did before i started about it.

for anyone thinking of quitting, i will give you a couple of the reasons that motivate me.
1. my mom died of cancer. nonsmoking related cancer but cancer none the less. And trust me, I don't want that to be me and you don't want that to be you.
2. It would have been 10 years of smoking the day after christmas. that scared me when i realized it.
3. I read an article that stated that smoking turns your skin yellow from the inside out. thats right your insides turn yellow. That was really the grossest thing I have ever read.

so if anyone needs a good reason #3 is a great one.

Okay, I'm glad I'm not turning my insides yellow anymore. Eewww. I also like to think about what my lungs looked like. have you every really looked at the filter of a cigarette after you've smoked it. That nasty brown color? Imagine what our poor lungs looked like.

Now, I like to think about them getting healthier and healthier, especially every time I run. I can fell my breathing capacity improving every day. That's something exciting to think about.

Drayz, have you noticed your skin looking better? I noticed after the first month or so my skin was looking smoother. Yay for not smoking! You really are kicking a habit, so keep up the great work!

How's everyone else? What's everyone else up to? I know the holidays can be stressful, so if you need to vent, this is the place.

Re: Ex-Smokers Support 11/26 - 12/2
Going strong here. My runs are feeling better and better. Here is my complaint: my social life is suffering. Drinking is a huge smoking trigger for me, so I've been avoiding the bar scene and smoker friends. This was okay for a couple weeks, but as I approach one month I find that I miss my friends! I try to make dinner dates and healthy dates (museum, movie, or anything not involving booze), but that doesn't seem to interest the majority. Are my days of drinking with old friends over? Sigh. I'm sad to realize that most of my socialization revolved around drinking. I feel quite "lame" and more domesticated than I can stand. Any suggestions?

Re: Ex-Smokers Support 11/26 - 12/2
fragileknees- To be honest with you, eventually you're going to have to get back out there in the "real world" and be around people who smoke. I don't know about where you come from but in Michigan there are very few completely non-smoking restaurants or bars. I think it's part of the quitting process, too, testing yourself by being around people who smoke. Because, unfortunately, you it's bound to happen. So, I hope you find a way to hang out with your friends without being tempted to smoke. When I first started going to the bar I stopped ordering my usual beer and got fruity concoctions that would've tasted horrible with a cigarette. That helped. GOOD LUCK!!!

fragileknees..

for me, going out drinking doesn't bother me anymore than any other activity I used to like to smoke while doing. now i realize all activities are better without. just be patient with yourself. it will come. you are doing so great. just remember. Smoking is not an option. I like to repeat that one to my self.

Meg:
my skin is looking slightly better. i will update more next week when I am not suffering mass hormone surges that cause me to breakout. but over all i would say yes it is better.

Tomorrow is day 20, and for some reason, i am really excited about that.

thanks again. all of you are so awesome. couldn't have gotten this far without you.
