Marathon Trainers - week of 12/2

WOOHOO!!!! 1:02:17 yeah baby!!! 10K done and it was great!!

So it was freezing rain all morning got up dragged fiance out of bed and got to the place at 9 where we found out the race wasn't till 1. oops! back home to hang out... ok Take 2! Got to the place an hour early, hung out inside because like I said it was freezing rain! Went up to the start and milled around. Stood toward the back but there was no real order so i had no clue if I was where I should be or not. We moved like sardine's over the mat and then I was off. I just went real easy and tried not to panic as waves of people passed by me. Around mile 1 I realized there was still people behind me. Around mile 2 I warmed up a bit and started to feel good and pass people. Around mile 3 i was still slowly passing people, around mile 4 and 5 I was still passing some people. Shortly after mile 5 i caught up with girls from my schools cross country team 1 of whom i knew. They commented on how strong I looked - so cute! After a minute or so I left them for better things. So then it was the home stretch and I was feeling a little tired but I kept passing people and telling those who slowed to walk they were doing great - what else can you do when your smile is literally frozen onto your face (did I mention the freezing rain!). Then when I got into the stadium I picked up the pace for the lap to the finish! 1:02:17!!! Stopped to cheer the girls on. Found DF who missed the finish because he got confused. He loving commented on my frozen snotsicles and frozen eyebrows!! We went inside I stretched looked at the posting. Found me hangin out at 512 of I don't know how many because I didn't really look. Figured I probably didn't place in my age group or anything so we left to get me home to a hot shower!

I FEEL SOOOOOOO GREAT!!!!

Hope everyone is having a great day!

ShanGen - AWESOME!!! great job on yer 10k!

I just got back from 50k... it was 3.5 hour drive home.. brutal.
I CRUSHED my PR by 30 minutes (which isnt saying much), I am finding I run much better when it isnt 90 degrees out.

Came in at 5:20. I feel great right now, not like I want to go for a run, but don't feel all that wiped out.

Gotta go play with kids..ciao for now!

ShanGen - way to go on your 10K! Great race report for a well run race in crappy weather.

Salathe - Way to crush your PR! You shooting for sandbagger of the year? Cause you got no chance! That title is all MINE when I run my second marathon.

10 miles today. It's amazing what two days off and two nights of nearly enough sleep can do for your running. Ran a good 25+ seconds faster than my normal training pace. Didn't even really feel it until the uphill into teh wind climb at mile 7.5-9.

Tomorrow's tempo in 34 degree rain!

Oh boy.

Oh ShanGen, I'm so happy for you! That is awesome. Weren't you worried you wouldn't hit 1:10? You blew that out of the water. This is an excellent stepping stone in your marathon training. It's so important to get some actual race experience, and you were so wise to "not panics waves of people passed by me." That is so important. Good job, rest up and I hope you're all warm and toasty now!

Salathe, another excellent job. More telling than your finishing time (which, by the way, is excellent) is the fact that you aren't wiped out afterwards. I remember your 50k you did earlier (don't think it was a 50 miler), your comment was you were totally wasted. So this is good... and you didn't think you were ready! Silly man....

Nice run Mrinertia. Yes, it's amazing what some rest can do, no?

I ran 10.54 miles today in 1:30; temps were 16-18 for most of the route, but the winds brought the wind chill down to around zero. I was fine for most of it, but did have to turn around and take a different route back to the car at about mile 7... just couldn't take the headwind. All in all, it was a very nice run, got done just as the sun was going down (around 2:30) and tried out my new Hind Arctic winter running pants. Very nice stuff. I actually overheated when I had the tailwind, but you can't get it perfect all the time.

Just signed up for another marathon on 12/16.....

ShanGen,
You're awesome girl. So glad you had a great race. Was thinking about you during my run today. What did you wear? Sounds like you were not cold. With better weather you will be under an hour no doubt. You tell your co-worker about the race just like you told us. Are you addicted yet?

Salathe,
Wow, that's amazing. I am impressed. You're the man.

Inertia,
Very glad you got some rest. Good job on that run. 34F sounds like dream weather compared to the 15F here.

Erika,
Another marathon, sigh, you are the energizer bunny. I struggle with clothes for that kind of cold too. Too warm, you sweat and get chilled when you hit the wind. TOo cold, and you just want to quit. I end up doing a loop that has lots of roads that I can take to get back sooner. You run on side walks there? Does the cold slow you down? I really struggle with that, if you remember I did last year too. Thinking I will have to do speed work on the treadmil.

5 miles in the cold with new Nike Air Structure Traix[/URL" target="_blank">. Not sure about them, they are heavy, better traction, and very warm. Those of you that run in the snow do you use different shoes than in summer?

Also new today, were a pair of Avalanche Polartec Running Pants. They have a fleece lining. Love em.

My first week of using SportsTrack Log:
Total Distance: 26.68 miles
Total Running Time: 4:06:56
Avg Pace: 9:35
Total Swimming: 1:53
Total Cycle: 1:30
Total Time: 8:29:56
Weight: -down two pounds

Way to go Bugs.

Erika, I love that comment about getting done when the sun goes down... at 2: 30 pm.

Ran with the Tri club tonight to go see Christmas lights.

Supposed to go 7 miles. Got one mile in and g/f hurt her hamstring and we walked back to the cars.

ShanGen: Congratulations! You got the most out of the experience and you'll get through the the 1/2 prepared. I got a boost just reading the report.

Salathe: Nice work on the 50k!

Erika: M in December? We need details!

No run this morning. Don't like rest days on Mondays just feels like I need this one. Had two rain runs over the weekend. 16-miler in sleet and rain mix Saturday and then Sunday the temp was up to 60°F by the morning and I got soaked with 1.5 left to go in a 10-miler. By evening yesterday we were in the 20°'s. Shoes were still damp this morning inspite of the fireplace. Hope the new ones show up today. Hate ordering over the internet but saved $40.00 from what I would have paid after shopping the two local stores that carry them.

I had a great time getting the lights and decorations out on the house yesterday afternoon. Looks nice in sub-Griswold sort of way...
At least my priorities were clear. Run when it's 60°'s. Get on the roof after the rains, the wind is 20mph and the temp is in the 30°'s.
Good Mondays to all!

Wind? No problem. Sleet? Piece of cake. Running head-first into sleet driven by 20-25 MPW winds? Now that just hurts. Wind was coming straight in from the west this morning. I could run west/east out and back and deal with a faceful of sleet for my first or second half of the run or I could run north/south out and back and deal with the hills while getting hit by the sleet from the side. Most of the hills are overpasses so there's zero wind protection. My solution? Run a mile stright into the wind, decide enough was enough and run home. Two stinking miles this morning.

ShanGen,
I am still so very happy for you. You ran it perfect.

Cash,
Sorry about the run cut short. Hope the hamstring is better.

Inertia,
Sounds like you had the weather we had on Saturday, and I only got 2 miles too. Some days it's just not worth it.

Nice job, ShanGen !!

"Chip Time" is time elapsed from the time you cross the start mat until the time you cross the finish mat.

"Gun Time" is time elapsed the from the time the start gun goes off until the time you cross the finish mat. So it includes the time you are waiting to cross the start line. In your case, it looks like it took you 1:03 to cross the start line.

So, "WOOHOO!!!!! 1:01:13 yeah baby!!!"

ShanGen, always go by your chip time.

54 laps at the track in the Y today. Never did this before. I like it. I tried to do intervals. Next time I will bring heart monitor.

Cash,
Do you have a watch for swimming?

MrI, I'd cut it short too. No, strike that... I wouldn't go out! that's why God made treadmills.

ShanGen, this will be #5.

P2R, the December marathon is in Olympia WA on 12/16. Sometimes it's had really nice weather, but bets are on total ****. So if it's nice, I'll be pleasantly surprised, but I think I used up my good weather blessings at Seattle last month.

Rest or cross training day today. If I do anything, it'll be the stationary bike at home. I get a lot of magazines read that way.

Hope everyone is dealing with the weather... it sounds like both ends of the country are getting hammered.
