Ex-Smokers Suppport 12/3-12/9

Hope I'm not stepping on anyones toes by starting this weeks thread, but I had the time and support the cause.

Having quit myself I know how hard it can be, especially during the holidays to quit smoking. But if you are reading this post or have read of the prior ones you are definatly on the right track. good luck to all those who have decided to kick the habit, and know that you have friends and support here.

Andy

Re: Ex-Smokers Suppport 12/3-12/9
Thanks for starting this week Andy.
How is everyone doing so far? I've been busy here. DH is gone this week and the kids are doing alright with it. He goes so often now that they really only get upset the first day he's gone. My only problem is that it cuts into my training time. Not a big deal if I wasn't training for a marathon.

We are headed back stateside in about 3 or 4 weeks. Can't wait!! It will be nice to see family for a little while. Then when I get my fill, we head out and do our marathon. Perfect timing! My sister and family are coming out to stay with us at the marathon. She is a smoker. Not that I'd smoke before the race but I can almost guarantee afterwards I'll want one. Being surrounded by runners will help me not smoke. The stares and glares I am imagining are already making me feel guilty about even thinking about a cigarette!

Keep up the good work everyone! We all know how rough this time of year is. Just think of all the new people ready to join us January 1. We have to be ready for them. We can show them how it's done!

We shouldn't let this thread die out. I think it is too important for people who are trying to quit to know that they are not alone. And in the running community, being a smoker can be a very lonely place.

Come on, lets keep it going!

BTW, does anyone know any good on line communities for people to get help quitting?

Hey all!

I just took my first 1mg "morning" pill of chantix (this is day 8). My quit day was today, but I actually quit on Tuesday because this stuff really works, the few cigarettes I tried to smoke were disgusting. So, I think I am doing pretty well, just keeping busy and trying not to think about it.

It's pretty shocking how fast this chantix works. I thought there would be a bit of a grace period where I could enjoy a few more puffs...........nope

Good luck to all of you!

Re: Ex-Smokers Suppport 12/3-12/9
I got a really bad cold and couldn't smoke because I was hacking my head off. It was then that I decided it was time to quit cold turkey. I figured that I hadn't smoked for a week and it would be easier than trying to quit when I was healthy. Friday will be week 4 without the cigs. After I was feeling better I started the C25K again and I'm in week 2.

There have been a couple of times that I have wanted to light up but I got through them and it was worth it. It is weird because I went to a bar on Thanksgiving with a friend and I thought that it would be really hard not to smoke. I was actually disgusted by all of the smoke and had no desire to have one and the second hand smoke made me feel a bit ill.

My friend who just finished C25K is going to quit after the holidays. We were talking about making a list of the reasons why smoking is bad for us personally. Anytime we want to smoke we could pull out the list. I was also thinking of getting a picture of myself smoking to reference as well. I looked pretty silly with that thing hanging out of my mouth.

Good luck to everyone here.

I quit on November 5. I feel great about it! I am so glad I found the ex-smoker threads to support me. I haven't had a bad craving in a while, and my new running addiction is certainly helping out.

Hi everybody. I've been lurking but not posting because I had a bad weekend (i.e. smoked numerous ciggs). That being said, I have new resolve (again). I got a scipt for chatnix and started it yesterday. I want to thank you all because you inspired me to try this medication. I am SUCH a relapser and I want off for good. None of this 5 days off, 2 on, 10 off, 1 one nonsense. GET ME OFF THE NICOTINE!!! I gladly welcome any advice on handling the meds. The side effects sound pretty scary! You guys get the bad dreams and nausea? I'll keep you posted on my progress.

The only advice I have to make it stick is to quit drinking, at least for a little while. I don't know if that is the cause for the weekend relapses, but it usually is for me. Then when you do decide you are ready for a drink, have it at home with no smoker's around. Only go back to the bar scene with smoking friends when you KNOW you won't be tempted.

with chantix, just make sure you eat before you take it. it helps. i have not had bad dreams, just very active dreaming which has made me have some sleep problems. but at the end of the day, it is very worth it. i will gladly take a few short term things for a life time of not smoking.

Hi you guys. I saw this thread and just wanted to pop in and let you know you all can do it! Be strong. I quit smoking in April 2006, over a year and a half ago now. I never thought I would be able to but I made it. If I can do it, trust me, ANYONE CAN. The first few weeks are the hardest. Don't give up!

Re: Ex-Smokers Suppport 12/3-12/9
So, my friend dropped off he little boy this morning so I could babysit for the day. 2 things about that:
1.) I really don't like this kid; he's a pain in the tushie and really just drives me crazy. Said I'd do it because it's a Spanish holiday and his daycare was closed. Friend was in a bind since it's busy here on base. REALLY wanted a cigarette after yesterday and will be dying for one, I am sure, by the end of today.
2.) Smelled them as they walked in the house and the smell of cigarettes on clothing was just sickening. So that just canceled my craving! When my friend comes today to pick up her son I'll breathe in the smell in her hair and on the uniform and NOT want to smoke.

Almost 7 full months without smoking! I can't believe it. So that means 7 months of running regularly. WE ROCK!!
Have a great weekend everyone!
