Rate of speed increase for a beginner??

I've been running for 10 wks now and am wondering how other people have progressed in their pace over time. I ran a 5k on Thanksgiving in 23:45 (7:39 pace), which was pretty much at my goal pace for that time. I would like to get down to under 7:00 pace by the spring with an ambitious goal of sub 20 minute 5k. I am running 4 days/wk, 3 on treadmill, 1 on road, with one long run and one interval per week. ~ 20 miles/wk. I am doing a 40 minute spinning class for 2 days/wk. My aerobic base before running was the 2 days of spinning class per week, with 3 days of weightlifting.

I'm 42 yo, started at 185 lbs, now at ~170 lbs. My goal weight for the Spring is 160 lbs since I want to get faster.

I'm interested to see how others have progressed with their pace over time so I can get a feel for what is possible.

Are my goals too aggressive?

Thanks!

WTF? LOL, you are 42 with no running background? Sheesh, a 23 minute 5K is outstanding!!!!!!

Get off the treadmill and out on the road, get your miles up t the high 20s. You are doing quite well!!!!

Um - Ive been running for 12 weeks now and thought i was doing well with my 12:10 mm pace - I'm 31 and 124 lbs. Now i feel like a loser - thanks

Just Kidding - i think your goals are probably too ambitious, and you might end up injuring yourself. Just get your miles up and stop worrying about your speed.

Re: Rate of speed increase for a beginner??
At age 16 it took me about 2 weeks to run a sub 24 five-k.
Within 2 months I was in the mid 22s.

I quit running during the winter.
The next year I ran more and was in the mid 20s.
But I was young then so it will be harder for you.

I would think the sub 7 minute pace is something to shoot for. You could probably do that in 3-4 months if you are pretty fit. Now I am reading what moppet says and have to agree. Going from 23:45 to 21:42 is quite a time drop for 20 miles a week. Your 1st goal should be sub 23...do not look too far ahead as each minute drop is much harder than the last. In my opinion,I think you could be in the low to mid 22s by spring no problem.

I have never broken the 20 barrier at age 34 ...for me that takes alot of training...35 miles per week last year for 8 months straight got me close but fell just short.

This year I dropped my 5K mile pace by roughly 45-50 seconds per mile, and over 2:30 off my 5K time. The original poster appears to be in really good shape. If he/she ups their mileage they should be fine.

Thanks for the comments!

I live in MA so its cold, dark and snowy outside now, that's why I'll only do one long road run on the wkend. I'm only running 4 days a wk bc I am concerned about overtraining and injuries, so I thought the spinning would be good for easy days to help build my stamina. I figure in the spring I'll run 5-6 days/wk.

Re: Rate of speed increase for a beginner??
Yes, that is a very good pace for a new runner. You made the jump to sub 24:00 quite quickly - I was training regularly for a year and a half before I'd built up the stamina to run that fast for that long. Having gotten there, I was able to get to 22:00 and change within another few months - my next race, I think. Then the quantum leap improvement stopped, and I have been working very hard for the last 3 or four years to break the 21:00 barrier. I doubt that I have the potential that you have - I think you'll be into the low 20:00 or even sub 20:00 area by this summer if not this spring. Racing by itself will make you a better racer. Read up on different racing plans and training paces/strategies. Losing weight will definitely make that goal easier as well.

Like you said, spending your winter months building up endurance with easier running and cross training will help you to stay injury free - you can't get faster if you can't train. Good Luck - just stay away from the Albany area - we have enough fast 40-45 masters already.

Also, feel free to join us in the "40's on the run..." weekly thread, or over on the "Boomers and Beyond" forum, where there are a lot of people our age (I'm 43) who have been training and racing for a long time.

Brian,

It's good to hear that you made good improvement during the first couple years before hitting a plateau. That's the type of information I was looking for and it will definately help keep me motivated. I will check out the forum and threads you mentioned.

Thanks!

Tom

Re: Rate of speed increase for a beginner??
Hi! I have been pretty ambitious about my speed goals over the last year after I got badly hooked on marathoning. At first, I wasn't too interested in being fast, but when I did my first marathon, I wanted so bad to do it faster. I learned lots from Jeff Galloway's books about speed training. He suggests that you work on building up your speed for about two months at a time, and then maintain that level for two months before working on it to go even faster if you want to. Speed drills and running on hills are the key components in building up your speed. While I am training for a marathon, I basically just maintain my speed capabilities. If I want to be faster for a short race, I would concentrate on building up my speed during the few months prior to that race. I found it very helpful to focus on speed trainng during the few months when I am not training for a marathon. I strongly suggest you check Jeff Galloway's book on running, he has some very specific suggestions on how you would go about it.
