Hi Newbies, I report this just so you know that folks with over 30 yrs of running and competing can have bad days. This was my third DNF in over 400 races. I knew at mile 2 of my 26 mile journey to run under a 3:58 was not in the cards. I would have dropped out sooner than 17 miles but the race (Rocket City Marathon) didn't have great suport for runners having a bad day.
Yesterday, I was bummed. I had trained great/had tapered and felt ready. Didn't happen. Today I am re-energized and plan on doing what I set out to do yesterday in February at the Tallahassee Marathon.

Thanks for letting me share. I hope the lesson for you folks is that we can have bad run/race dayseven when we train and run on goal pace. Nick
Nick, you rock! DNF or not, still way better that DNStart! Thanks for all the help you've given us newbies, even hard stuff like this!
Any thoughts on what went wrong?
You're still my hero...

Thanks for swallowing your pride to tell this story and help us keep things in perspective Nick. As a newbie, I tend to think of guys like you as invincible!
Thanks for posting, it's good to know that it can happen to anyone at any time.

Sorry about the DNF. Thanks so much for the post, though. It makes me feel better about my DNF in a 5K after only 3 months of running. What was I thinking, anyway?!?!

I wish I knew. I honnestly can't remember ever having a runno less a race where it just was not fun/where I just struggled to maintain a pace I had trained at for 20 miles and felt fine.and I knew it wasn't my day at mile or 2 or so. I have felt better at the end of 50+ mile runs than I did early on in the marathon
Good news is I rested Sundayincluding 6+ hours of driving. Went out this AM. Walked a very slow first milethen ran 4 minutesEZ and walked a minute for 3 more miles. Felt like me again. I am greatful I didn't injure myself and would have stopped way earlier had someone offered me a ride.

I so strongly recommend the run/walk method. I didn't do it for the marathon because I had done the training 50-60 mile weeks for 9 months: base/sharpening and some tune up races. All that went well.

February, 2008Tallahasse marathon I will toe the line for my 16 and 3/4 marathon. Nick
