Calorie Deficit

Has anyone found that even trying to get a 500 calorie a day deficit is too much? I'm aiming for 500 a day right now and its killing me. I go to bed hungry and wake up hungry. Am I just unfortunate?? What is everyone's ideal deficit for weight loss, and how did you get to it? (ie how much consumed and how much burned?). For example, on Monday I ate 1775 and burned 2375, for a deficit of 600. But I can't continue like that on a daily basis.

FYI - I'm 5'5" female, 25 yo, and weigh around 135, hoping to get back to 130. (125 is ultimate goal, but I'll take 130 any day now).

Re: Calorie Deficit
STOP COUNTING CALORIES Please you are fine for your height and weight. Just increase your mileage to like two miles a week, and stop weighing yourself. You are driving yourself insane.

Re: Calorie Deficit
Did you multiply your BMR by your activity level before taking off the 500 calories?

Activity Multiplier
Sedentary = 1.2 (little exercise, desk job)
Light Activity = 1.375 (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/wk)
Moderate Activity = 1.55 (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week)
Very Active = 1.725 (heavy exercise/sports 6-7 days/week)
Extreme Activity = 1.9 (heavy exercise/sports, physically demanding job)

Around 2,000-2,200 calories a day sounds fine. Are you eating 6 meals spread throughout the day?.

Re: Calorie Deficit
I am headed to where you are and I think I get to eat gobs of food. I am 5'5" and weigh 175 and want to weigh anything under 140. I would kill to weigh 135. Granted I am also 47 yrs old and have 5 kids too.

I plan on eating 1800 calories a day and excercise for a minimum of 600 calories burned. I get anywhere between a 500 and 800 deficit depending on how much I actually excercise.

What are you eating exactly or how much are you excercising?

Re: Calorie Deficit
A 250 calorie deficit is probably more sustainable than a 500 calorie deficit, meaning your weight loss will be more successful (over the long run, but it will take longer of course). Also, since you're so close to your goal weight anyway, you should expect weight loss to be pretty slow. Dieting generally = hunger. But out of control hunger might mean you're restricting too much and/or that your food choices aren't great. Switching to bulkier foods (higher fiber, more fruits and veggies) for the same caloric content might help. As an aside, I'm not dieting, but I always wake up hungry - I'd think that's normal since you've probably been fasting for over 8 hours at that point!

I'm 5'5" female, now at 116 for weight, and have cut about 28 pounds this last year. I eat a little less during the week, and a little more on the weekend. I'm sure I average less than 1800 calories. I don't have a problem with hunger. What are you eating? Certain foods can make you more hungry.

Re: Calorie Deficit
I read an interesting theory the other day, but I can't find the article. The jist follows:

Rather than a flat rate of 500 calories cut per day from any given diet, we should look at percentages, this person theorized. I think he said to cut no more than 15%-20% of calories off of what would be maintenance.

So, a very obese person needing 2800 calories per day for maintenance could cut 560 calories from his diet, and lose weight quickly by eating 2240 calories per day.

On the other hand, a woman who needs 1600 calories per day for maintenance shouldn't cut more than 320 calories per day, so shouldn't eat less than 1280.

Your 250 calorie deficit idea is probably pretty right on, and right in line with his ideas.

Other than that, I second Paulmitch's sentiment: you're at a healthy weight - don't diet. If you're unhappy with your body, consider weight training to build muscle and reshape your body a little. But.... that's not what you asked, is it?

Re: Calorie Deficit
kc - its all about what works for you.

BMR is just a guideline, a rough estimate. You may have a higher metabolism than average and thus need more food.

Try a 250 calories deficit and see how it goes. Give it 6-8 weeks before you judge your progress.

Good luck!

Re: Calorie Deficit
kc,

I wonder what your diet looks like. I think about 1800 calories is probably an appropriate level for you (I say that because I'm 5'5", 137 lbs, run about 20 miles a week, and am eating 1800 calories to lose weight down to about 125 or so). However, you might still feel hungry if you are not eating the right things. Fill up on soups and vegetables and fruits! Read the book Volumetrics by Dr. Barbara Rolls. She's done some really great studies showing how certain foods fill you up better for the same calorie level. Basically, foods with a lot of water or air (with lots of volume or weight per calorie) are better at satisfying hunger. You can eat the same number of calories but feel more full. Check it out! It might be the help you need!
