Question on carbs - how much?

Greetings - wonder if someone could give me a good idea on the right amount of carbs while trying to lose weight... I am currently running about 15-20 miles a week, but will be adding more in prep. for the Richmond Marathon in November. I am 5'9", and weigh 175 pounds. Right now my diet is pretty much fruit, vegetables, and chicken. The only carbs I'm really getting are from a bowl of oatmeal in the a.m. and a bagel for lunch. That's about it! And the occasional spaghetti dinner. Any info/knowledge would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Question on carbs - how much?
Carbs should make up about 60 to 65% of your total caloric intake for the day. A good rule of thumb for what the total needs to be is multiply your weight in pounds by 15. The resultant number is an estimate of the number of calories you need to exist. Add to that 100 calories for each mile you are running for a particular day.

From the total caloric value, 15% should come from protein, 60-65% from carbs, and the balance from fats.

Re: Question on carbs - how much?
With the emphasis on LOSING WEIGHT you do need to decrease your carbs. I agree with the other poster that the government recommends you take in 60-65% from carbs, but study after study (I have my B.S. in Nutrition) shows that the ideal diet for fat loss is High Protein/Low Fat. So what kind? Ditch the bread, oatmeal, bagels, etc. For carbs take in fruits and some starchy vegetables (sweet potatoes) or legumes. Since you are running you do need them, but I would focus on quality sources which come with the added benefit of blood PH stabilization and micronutrients. Hope this helps and good luck on the race!

I am a certified Health Educator, as well as a runner and cyclist. I agree that 55-65% of your diet should come from carbs (whole grain). I have always increased my carb intake while training. If you want to lose weight then simply burn more calories that you currently consume while training. Just be careful that it doesn't exceed 2 lbs a week because it will most likely be water & lean muscle and not fat loss.

The high-protein diet is terrific for kidney loss, too.

Kidneys just make you pee too much, so the loss of their function saves time over the course of a day.

Re: Question on carbs - how much?
First of all, fruits are carbs, so you are actually getting more than just a bowl of oatmeal and a bagel.

Secondly, this is a good thing! As a runner you need carbs to fuel your workouts. It is very difficult for your body to use protein and fat for energy while exercising. Carbs are your fuel for running. The phenomenon of "hitting the wall" is actually caused by running out of carbs.

It is very important to eat some carbs 30-60 minutes before your workout, and also to eat more carbs again within 30 minutes of finishing. You need to replenish your muscles' stores of glycogen (fuel which comes from carbs), and research shows that the best way to reload your muscles is within a 30 minute "carbohydrate window" after exercise. So don't think of carbs as an enemy, instead think of them as necessary fuel. While training for a marathon is no time to try to cut back on carbs! If you want to be healthy, get your carbs from fruits and whole grains. Oatmeal is excellent, but not if you use that instant **** with artificial flavors and high fructose corn syrup. Try boiling rolled oats for 5 minutes instead. The texture is so much better! Then you can add some cinnamon, honey, maple syrup, etc to taste.

You're right, beerpace. Think of all that time we waste in the bathroom. Pesky kidneys....

Re: Question on carbs - how much?
Helen82 sums it up nicely and is funny too.

A high pro/low fat diet has merit for joe lunchbox, but for endurance athletes, it's too much nitrogenous waste and not enough carbs. You're on the right track, trevnn - fruits, vegetables, whole grains are good for you. How about rice, potatoes, those delicious frozen soft pretzels? Low fat and skim milk gives you some carbs, but more importantly, cramp-preventing calcium, potassium and sodium. Chocolate milk! mmm...

I find that humor is definitely the best way to point out the absurdity of such diets. Of course, kidneys add quite a bit of extra weight...getting rid of them should be worth a few ounces.

Helen82, you are too funny! You could sell one of those kidneys and buy a new pair of shoes and a Garmin GPS too.
