suggestions for a good energy bar

I really, really don't like the new bars coated in yogurt and fake chocolate. These seem more like snack candy to me. After a long run, I'm not looking for something sweet to wash down with the drink. I've tried PowerBars of course but find them to be too sticky and something about the texture is a little off.

So, seeking suggestions for a bar that's not well known that might meet my criteria: plain, no coatings, chewy texture, good taste.

Got to get those post run calories in and the bar is just so convenient.

Try Larabars. They are very simple and very tasty. No coating and all natural ingredients. For instance the Cashew Cookie is made of the following ingredients: dates and cashews. It has 230 calories and 5g of protein.

PS I recall Boulder bars being really great too, but I haven't had one in a long time. I don't even know if they're around anymore.

Yeah: Luna is good (made by Clif). Its lower in fat than many other bars and its carbs don't come in the form of high fructose corn syrup.

Even better, though, is Luna's "Sunrise" line: it has 8g protein (regular Luna has just 5) and also has 29g carb. The flavors are fruit-based too; not chocolate and candy based. Sunrise is new, though, so you might have to look around for it.

Ditto on regular Clif too. It has no coatings at all (which you will find on regular Luna).

Also check out Odwalla bars, too, for no coating, low fat, and a lot of carbs (around 40 grams and 220 calories). Protein is lowish though--at about 3 or 4 grams--but they do manufacture a "Protein" flavor, which may contain a decent amount.

I've never heard of Hooah!.

I got a Hooah bar at a race once. (giveaway) It was decent (chocolate flavored) and was supposedly created at the request of the US Marines. They needed something for their troops while out on long marches and on assignment (I thought body armor would be good but guess not). Anyway, no calorie info (or protein, carbs, fat, etc) from me just because I don't care.

Clif is good.

I have a Luna Sunrise bar after my morning runs to tide me over until I have breakfast at work. I love the blueberry. I also like the regular Luna bars and the Clif bars. I think the carrot cake is my favorite.

I adore cliff bars! Yum! So much goodness in one little bar, and I find them to be really filling.

I like to. I try to get food into me within that hallowed window of ~20 minutes for maximum uptake of protein and ~60 minutes for max uptake of carbs. Your nutrients don't have to be in bar form, of course, but bars are good if you don't have dinner (or breakfast or whatever) all ready for yourself.

Hammer Bars are good, all natural, no coating, they are made by the same people who make the gel. Also I do love Lara Bars-just a bit expensive...

The PayDay Protein Bar isn't that pretty much a PayDay peanut candy bar? I do love PayDays, but I'm definitely going to search out the Luna Sunrise for the best combo of protein, carbs, and low fat.

Any one using energy bars to replenish after long runs?

Never had a payday candy bar so i cannot say. I just hate bars that taste like poop. I do not know what poop tastes like, but i imagine it tastes something like some of the bars i have eaten.

I usually eat one for my 2nd b-fast after my morning run (prerun i eat dry cereal). Usually 6-10 miles. On long run days i usually eat a bagel and choc soy milk.

Stick with the Clif Bars products. They have a lot of organic ingredients unlike many of the other bars listed in this topic.
