Re: Is There Such a Thing as a Healthy Burrito?
So I've heard everyone talk about these mexican food places, that you've all mentioned above, but no one said anything about Barbacoa, or Cafe Rio! Any thoughts on their burritos? I know the salads can be pretty bad if you get the guac, cheese, the huge helping of rice, aaaaand the dressing! Yikes....

Tofu at Moe's? That's crazy talk. You must be a veggie.

For non-veggies too: Moe's rocks!

My advice: Get a fully loaded "Homewrecker" and just plan on doing an extra long run that week.

Steve

P.S.
My wife gets 2 meals from the "Joey Bag of Donuts".

If you are in NJ or in Manhattan, I would make the trek via PATH over to Hoboken for Charritos, a small hole in the wall mexican joint on Washington and 1st or 2nd. They have the best mole sauce you can find.

Re: Is There Such a Thing as a Healthy Burrito?
HI!

I'm sorry I should have been more specific-I live just outside of Boston-so when I go in-I am usually in Fanueil Hall or in the Theatre District-I don't really even go to the Pru. But I will try to venture over there one day-I just have a hard time with the traffic in that area-ugh....

Sorry-but I do not like Anna's at all. But that is a lopsided opinion because the first and only time I ate there-I got chicken on my burrito and the 2nd bite I took had a huge thing of (avert your eyes if you get grossed out easily) of chicken fat. I have a strong stomach, but I did everything I could to not throw up-and ever since then I haven't been able to go back.

As for Quodoba and Chipolte-I am a huge sour cream fan -so I usually go get it and bring it home and put my own Fat Free Sour Cream on it and make my own guac to go on it. And heck when you go to place like this you are going to splurge so just do it:^) I am a super healthy eater, but I do get enjoyment out of chocolate, frozen yogurt, baking (heatlhy) and good Mexican:^)--anyone eat at Border Cafe in Harvard Square? Yummy!

As for making healthy burritos-very easy to do-I made one the other night-I boiled chicken for an hour and then used a fork to shred it. You can have it like this or I put it back in the pan and put some dried red pepper and other seasonings with a bit of water. And then I steamed some veggies (broccoli, squash, and zuccini-still crunchy) and then I put black beans, green pepper, corn, homemade guac and FF sour cream on whole wheat wrap-SO yummy and filling. My guy and roommates loved it and then I had leftovers for last night and maybe even tonight!

Just an idea! Thanks for the posting of Quodoba's!
Michelle

2000+ miligrams of sodium is healthy? Make your own delicious burritos and save on the fat, sodium and other garbage:

About to go make up a batch now. They freeze (and microwave) beautifully.

Re: Is There Such a Thing as a Healthy Burrito?
Like others have said, it's all about what you get on it.

Here's my Chipotle burrito w/ chicken, rice, green salsa, and cheese:

Calories 914 Calories from Fat 322
Total Fat 36g
Saturated Fat 11g
Cholesterol 126mg
Sodium 2308mg
Total Carbohydrate 98g
Dietary Fiber 2g
Sugars 1g
Protein 50g
Vitamin A 71%
Vitamin C 4%
Calcium 42%
Iron 22%

I normally get a bowl instead with chicken, rice, 3 salsas (corn, tomato and green), and cheese:

Calories 709 Calories from Fat 252

Total Fat 28g
Saturated Fat 9g
Cholesterol 126mg
Sodium 2548mg
Total Carbohydrate 72g
Dietary Fiber 4g
Sugars 6g
Protein 45g
Vitamin A 96%
Vitamin C 59%
Calcium 24%
Iron 8%

In fact, 2 years ago I gave up fast food hamburgers in an effort to lower my cholesterol. I basically replaced two hamburger & fries lunches per week with Chipotle burrito bowls. Other things have changed also, but this was the major thing. My LDL has dropped by 40 points!

Re: Is There Such a Thing as a Healthy Burrito?
Yay, I get to post instead of just read! I just made a delicious burrito for lunch. I used plain ol' refried beans from a can (probably 1/4th of a cup) spread on a tortilla (regular size, regular white flour cheapy stuff) and added some grilled chicken pieces (probably 1 cup, if you can use cups to measure chicken pieces), one lovely whole white mushroom, and sprinkled on a handful of shredded carrots and chopped onions to top it off. Smoothed on a bit (read: teaspoon) of homemade guacamole (avocado + lemon juice + dash of garlic powder) and once it was all warm and melted together, added the final touch: salsa!!! Lord almighty, it was big but I guarantee you I won't need more than carrot for dinner tonight. I love burritos.
