Healthy Eating (Help From Those With Experience)

Hey everyone, first off I'm an 18 year old male, about 5'11' and about 149-150 lbs. My goal for the end of summer was to be around 140, though work took up much more time than I wanted it too leaving little time for running. So as of August 1st, I began dieting - along with running. I'm eating a lot healthier than what I was before, and I feel a lot better, but I'm mainly doing this to loose a little tummy fat. I'm not fat at all, there's just a little bit preventing my abs from showing. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, cause after a month I'm seeing a difference, but not that much. Should I be eliminating certain foods that I am currently eating? Anyone with experience please help. Thanks, and God bless!

I'm no expert or anything (only 17) but it looks to me like you eat reasonably healthy. If you are having trouble you should try little things that will make a big difference, like improving speed and distance, also drinking green tea each morning instead of coffee will help a lot, (prefferably 1 pint). Also you can run twice a day, cutting out potatoes and eating only the amount of meat you need making your supper mostly vegtables.

Take it from a guy with abbs, they rule.

First, at 150, you don't need to lose weight. You could probably stand to add some strength training to develope more muscle tone and look great.

Second, your diet. There's not a lot of unhealthy junk in it, but it could stand some fine tuning. It is lacking in grains (unless you are eating huge amounts of rice cakes), vegetables and good fat.

Try adding some whole grain cereal, pasta, bread or simply cooked grains, like brown rice, quinoa or bulgur as a side dish. Grain carbs are not the enemy, especially for a runner.

It is also lacking in vegetables. I know you have plenty of fruits, but there are nutrients available only in veggies and you need them.

And finally, you have no healthy fats at all. Regular, natural style peanut butter would be a better choice, or walnuts or almonds as a snack and either eat some fish or add ground flax seed somewhere. (I'm hoping the milk and cheese are low or non fat varieties, but that's dealing with saturated fat.)

I agree with veggierunner. I also think you could add more protein. I see you already have chicken on your list (and eggs), why not add lean cuts of beef and/or seafood. Although yogourt and milk do contain protein, unless you are eating/drinking vast amounts of it, I don't think you would be getting the amount (and quality) of protein you need. I'm NOT saying go on a high protein diet, I'm just saying bump up your protein intake a bit .

I'd also suggest weight training 2-4 times per week if you don't already. Yes, the scale may go up A BIT because muscle is more dense than fat, but if your goal is to lose the little bit of flab on your tummy, than you shouldn't be too concerned with what the scale says. Focus on reducing BODYFAT, not just WEIGHT ( there IS a difference).

Looks pretty good but I would defintely get rid of the reduced fat PB! take a look at the label ...ew! I just was visiting my sister for a week and that is what she had and I sure missed the natural stuff....the reduced fat has a ton of sugar...it may take getting used to the natural PB at first, and I think putting a bit of honey on is good if you like the sweetness...
in general, I think the more you avoid processed and chemical laden foods, the better...ie, a rice cake is Ok but a half cup of brown rice much better....

You definitely need to be doing some ab exercises along with your running. Running itself is great cardio, but you will see the most results if you hit the wright room after. You may actually gain a few pounds, but then again.....you will be seeing some muscles.

What a shame...if you are trying to drop abdominal fat you are going about it all the wrong way!!!

Your diet is loaded with sugar. I see hardly any meat at all. A growing man needs to eat meat/salmon...how can you grow healthy muscles and bones on chicken?

Even the reduced fat peanut butter is going to be loaded with sugar (they take out the fat and add in the glucose).

If you keep on eating like this you will find yourself getting bigger and bigger and it is going to get harder and harder to stay trim. Your weight is probably not too far off...but at your own admission 140 is probably better running weight...and I have to agree.

Cut down on the sugar...increase consumption of non-starchy veggies...and eat some animal protein will you?

Broaden your diet to include more veggies, olive oil, healthy whole grains - and toss the scale. Do some weight lifting to add muscle. You are eating a diet with a lot of sugar, which can lead to blood sugar swings and feeling more hungry. Also, get rid of the "diet" drinks, or at least cut down to a very minimal amount.

A lot of guys (if not all?) your age are still growing. You are at a healthy weight, aren't you? And keep in mind that spot reducing doesn't work. You may run, weight may come off, but you don't get to chose where it comes from. Add muscle underneath and you have a better chance of revealing those "abs".
