Milk Substitute?

Alot of people I have been talking to recently, have entitled anything in the dairy world "A Runner's Worst Enemy".
I am a strict vegetarian, and have recently began eating more whole-grain cereals to aid in nutrient needs.
I was raised on Lactaid, and now have outgrown my intolerance, allowing me to choose skim milk. I have noticed a gassy, bad after-taste to the milk. Those of you have cereal, what do you put on it?

I use low fat soymilk. But if you try soy milk, know that there is a huge difference in taste and texture between brands. While cow's milk tastes pretty much the same whoever you buy it from, soymilks vary alot more. So if you try a brand of soymilk and don't like it, try a couple more!

I've found two brands that I love, one that I like, a couple that I tolerate, and a bunch that I wouldn't serve to my worst enemy.

I used unsweetened soy milk or rice milk. I like Silk soy and Rice Dream rice milks, but I haven't really disliked any others, either. I usually buy whatever is on sale!

Rice milk is really good but (even unsweetened) is very sweet. My hubby doesn't like it because it's too sweet for his taste. I would liken it to how cow's milk tastes after sitting in a bowl of sugary cereal. I personally like it but others may find it too sweet.

Why don't you buy a small aseptic carton (32 oz) of both rice and soy milk and see which you prefer?

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but what makes it a runner's worst enemy? I drink a lot of milk and have to hear unsubstantiated claims from a stoner hippie vegan friend about how terrible dairy is for the human body. I'm just wondering if there's anything behind the claims or if they're just some sort of hippie lore.

For the record, Vanilla Silk on cereal is AWESOME! The only problem I have is that it doesn't sog up cereals like cow milk does, and even Honey Nut Cheerios (for example) will hurt my gums after a large bowl. But man oh man does it taste good.

I just have to ask, how do you outgrow lactose intolerance? Intolerance is a failure to produce the necessary enzymes to breakdown the lactose. You don't start making those enzymes later in life. The natural course is to have them as an infant and, in some, to gradually lose them as you get older and mother nature doesn't expect you to be consuming milk anymore.

If you're experiencing gassiness and bad aftertaste with milk, then you're probably lactose intolerant.

I've developed intolerance as an adult and now use soymilk, usually Silk or 8th Continent (correct name?).


Cipher, some people are lacto-vegetarians and still consider themselves veggie since they're not eating the animal itself.

It is going to come as a tremendous shock to some of the best runners in the world that dairy is bad for runners. The typical diet of elite Kenyan runners is very high in dairy. In fact, they get most of their protein from dairy. Somebody is trying to sell you on their own personal agenda under the guise of "good for runners" nonsense.

That said, there is no dietary requirement for dairy. In much of the world adults drink little milk although products like cheese are still popular. As for cereal, I generally prefer hot cereals that are moist naturally and do not require milk.

I agree also that vanilla soymilk tastes great. It is good on cereal or just to drink. I recently gave up most diary because of lactose intolerance and was leary about buying the soymilk. I sure am glad I chose the vanilla flavor. Oh, I am going to miss ice cream.

I have always eaten my cereal dry and cannot imagine it any other way. My husband uses plain Silk Light soymilk.

Yes, but she said a strict vegetarian, which is generally understood to mean a dietary vegan (eg. no dairy, no meat).

Personally I have problems digesting soy milk, so I've switched to rice dream rice milk. There's no way I'd drink it on its own, in fact I haven't found any milk substitute that I'd do so with, but with cocoa or with cereal it's very nice.

Yeah, I'd like to see something on that as well. Especially after seeing the tons of threads ad nauseum on how chocolate skim milk is the world's best recovery drink.

Chocolate milk is supposed to be a good recovery drink because of its proportion of carbs rotein. However, it'd be pretty awful for someone who's lactose intolerant, as would any dairy before a run. Since somewhere in the neighborhood of 75% of adult humans are lactose intolerant, I imagine that's where the "runner's worst enemy" rap comes from. People of Northern European ancenstry are apparently the least affected by lactose intolerance. And obviously someone who's made liquid dairy a major part of his/her diet since infancy would also be less susceptible (as Americans often do). I would personally be extremely unhappy to have dairy before or after a run.
