Rice: How healthy is it?

Hey,
Just wondering how healthy rice is. I'm a college student and getting married in less than 2 weeks so naturally I'm looking for healthy foods to eat on a budget. So, I'm wondering how healthy rice is, being that it is so cheap. I just got a rice cooker and bought some rice. The rice cooker is SO easy to use and the rice turned out great. And it's very cheap. But, is it healthy? I know it will depend on how it's cooked, but, in general how is it?
Thanks.

p.s. Any recipes mixing meat and rice are welcome!

brown rice is one of the most nutritional foods around. white rice on the other hand is nutritionally bankrupt and should be avoided.

I agree. Any whole grain is going to be great. Anything refined, not good: white rice, typical pasta, most bagels, many breads, etc..

Rice is great (brown rice that is) and I will often make a mixed batch of white and brown (because I like jasmine rice although I know it's not nutritionally packed). A good nutritious, budget minded meal is a whole wheat tortilla wrap, put in a big spoonful of rice, another spoonful of black beans, add a bit of grated cheddar cheese and even a dolop of salsa. Wrap it up and heat it up in the micro for lunch on the go, at work, etc.

Life without basmati rice would not be worth living.

Go completely mad. Eat white rice!

I read somewhere recently that basmati rice and jasmine rice are not "white rices" in the sense that they are not processed and stripped of their nutrients in the same way that traditional "white rice" is. In other words, they are white in color, but not refined like "white rice" and are more like a whole grain. I think they are also easier on the digestive system than brown rice.

If anyone has any other info on this, please feel free to correct me.

I didn't know that about jasmine and basmati rice. (I hope it's correct because then I feel better about eating those two kinds!). Both of those are very tasty white rices!

Brown rice is nutrient packed and has a good dose of fiber.

I can't tolerate wheat and probably gluten (rye, barley, and possibly oats) so I eat tons of rice. My breakfast is a cup of rice, a handful of raisins, and an egg mixed up and nuked. Good I guess if you don't have any cholesterol issues. Protein, carbs, fiber, and the raisins could count as fruit !

I too try different rices - mix in some red rice, basmati, or wild (it's black and technically not a rice). Some of these rices - red or the wild - are not so great on their own, but mixed, say, 1/4 to 3/4 brown, or less, and they add some nice texture.

DeadSet: There are many types of rice, as you already know. I'm Asian, so rice was the main dish in every meal when I was growing up. Now, I may miss a meal or two without rice, but I cannot recall a day where I did not eat rice. I have heard others (from my ethnic group) say that "a meal without rice is just not complete." At times, I would have to agree with that.

I only eat jasmine rice, although I have had other types in the past. Jasmine rice is my favorite. You're right, rice is super easy to make in a rice cooker. Depending on where you are/live, there may be an Asian store (or two) that carry large quantaties of rice. I usually get a 50 pound bag each time I buy rice. It's extrememly economical, doesn't spoil, and lasts a long time. A 50 pound bag usually lasts about a good 6 months for me (and my family of 3). Where I get my rice, a 50 pound bag is around $23.00. Talk about a steal!

If rice was the only I eat, then I would agree that it's not the healthiest thing. But, with it I eat a good chunk of vegetables, fruits, and other healthy tidbits. There are plenty of rice recipes on the Internet. Take a few minutes to do a little searching and you'll find them. You're sure to find a few that you'll like.

Rice is a great cheap healthy food! As a starving college student who also happens to be a vegetarian and married as of last year, I have some other cheap healthy recommendations for you:
-beans in any form (canned are more expensive than dry but much easier to cook, although I have cooked dry lentils with great success in my rice cooker)
-whole wheat pasta
-Ramen noodles (I realize they don't qualify as healthy on their own but if you add an egg and frozen veggies to the bowl before you microwave it, they aren't bad in a pinch, especially if you don't drink the liquid)
-make your own whole wheat pizza from either a frozen crust or English muffins for mini pizzas
-pancakes
-and the all time most convenient energy and vitamin-packed food ever: whole grain cereal and skim milk with fruit

Tip: any bean plus any whole grain = a complete protein

I'm sure she didn't elaborate because the obvious answer would be steak, salmon, and ghee

The thing that helped me lose weight over the long haul was cutting wayyy back on the white rice and substituting other rices (brown, basmati, etc.) when I feel like having rice.

With that said, if I'm in the mood for rice and there's nothing but white rice around, I'll eat it no problem.

I'm Asian like IRun2Eat (though I don't run to eat! ) and when I was growing up there was almost no such thing as a meal without white rice. And there are plenty of Asian societies where white rice is the staple food which are collectively healthier than many western societies.

It's not a matter of whether rice is "healthy" or "not healthy". It's your entire diet and lifestyle that determines whether you are healthy or not. In my experience, for Asian families, a meal would consist not solely of rice, but included mostly a variety of vegetables with a small amount of meat.

For easy recipies, you can just mix in some frozen veggies and some meat in the rice cooker with the rice and it will all cook together. For some flavor, try substituting half of the water with chicken broth, add some curry powder, or add a few dashes of soy sauce to each serving. Or make a roux (google it for how-to), and stew some tomatoes with sausages and mix it all together with rice. Just experiment and see what comes out good and tasty!
