Sugar cravings and low GI diet

I've been getting some bad sugar cravings recently which I usually satisfy with a trip to Krispy Kreme donuts. I can't figure out if this has something to do with my low GI diet and if it's the body way of telling me I need more simple carbs in my diet. I can go most of the day on low GI lightly processed food but come evening time that goes all out the door as I've been known to gobble 6 to 12 donuts (I haven't had a donut in more than 5 years before I started running). I read somewhere that the body releases a hormone that signals intense cravings during low carb diets, I wonder if this also has to do with low GI foods.

I have a BMI of around 21 and run about 60 to 70 mpw.

The GI Diet isn't low carb, it's pretty high carb.. There are tons of grains, fruits, veggies, and even pasta.. I also have intense sugar cravings but I've determined that it's 100% mental. My head is telling me I need sugar, not my body. In my opinion, it's just not possible for your body to tell you that you need more simple carbs. We don't need simple sugars -ever.. I've heard that when you've done the GI thing long enough (a few weeks) without giving in to the sugar cravings, the cravings just disappear.. I've never gotten that far though..

What I've done to deal with these cravings is first not keeping any in the house. If I really want something I'll have to get off my butt and go get it. And if I do go and get something, it's one thing. It can be anything I want but once it's gone, it's gone and that's that. Maybe you could do something similar by just buying 1 donut, instead of a whole box?

I dunno much about low GI diets, but if you're having cravings, figure out if you're missing some sort of nutrient. Are you getting enough vitamins/micronutrients? Having too little salt, or even or being dehydrated can also lead to cravings.

Even a small deficiency in a single nutrient will cause your body to crave certain foods as a way of getting those nutrients.

Try keeping a food diary for a couple of days as a way of focusing on what you are eating.

I am on a very low-carb diet.

During recovery my body has a craving for L-Glutamine. As long as I satisfy it I have no problems.

It is probably the feeling that people on high-carb diets get and they think it can be satisfied with sugar. Obviously not if you have to eat 6-12 donuts and probably feel like you could eat more.
