Nutrition help...plz

okay guys let me give some info about me... I'm 5'6, male of 18 yrs., always shuffling from 115-120 lbs, but my figure doesn't look like i'm really thin.

However, my forearms is what bothers me. Whenever I see myself in the mirror I feel so disatisfied. I've started going to the gym this past week and started weight training. One day I work out my upper body and run about 2 miles. The day following that I run about 4-4.5 miles then workout my lower body. What I want to do now is start eating this powerbar-(protein plus) to help along with the process. What's the best thing to do eat it before a workout or afterwards?

Also another intention for me going to the gym is that I want to run the Chevron Houston Half Marathon this January. Does it seem likely that I can do it while finishing injury-free?

Thank for any feedback.

One thing I would suggest is to make sure you do whatever is more important to you first. If strength is more important, make sure you do it before you run, and vice versa. By the time you get to the second thing, you might be too tired to get the most out of that workout..

Is it your forearms or your upper arms that are bothering you? I'm not sure if there's much you can do about your forearms but even I have built up some nice definition in my biceps, and I'm a woman.. Just be careful not to overdo it and tear something.. I've done that and it's extremely painful and even more frustrating..

As far as I know, if you're going to do the protein bar thing it's best to do it within the half hour after your workout. I know a pretty popular alternative for post-workout protein and other nutrients is chocolate milk.. Apparently it's very good for you and in my opinion, much tastier than any protein bar..

If you are training for the Houston half, what is your longest run so far? How many miles a week do you normally run? Do you plan on following a training program? I run with Fort Bend Fit, and we have been training since July. Don't let that freak you out!! That isn't necessary for the half, butnow would be a good time to start. Are you training with someone, or trying this on your own?

There is a group of Fort Bend Fit people running from Memorial Park tomorrow. 6 miles at 6:00 am. That's 2 loops around the Lieberman excerloop thingie. Running with someone else won't mess up your pace if you find the right person to run with. If you want to come out tomorrow, you could at least run with an experienced group with paces from slow to Boston! You could get a lot of questions answered. Maybe even questions you didn't know you have!! What sort of energy do you plan on using (gel, cliff shots etc.) Have you ever used e-caps for electrolyte replacement? Just nice things to know (and try) before you get out on the course! And don't underestimate the power of conversation to distract your aching muscles and negative feelings during a long run! Let me know, and I'll post where we are meeting!

Get a training program, like Hal Higdon's novice program[/URL" target="_blank"> and follow it. You'll find lots of others online.

If you're running for more than an hour, and you will be, it's smart to stay fueled. This goes for your training runs as they get longer too. It would also be a good idea to head over to Newbie Café or Basic Training and see what people have to say about training for a half.

One thing you don't mention is how long you've been running for. It matters. 13.1 miles is no joke, and going into the training with very little base is unwise.

irun - now I feel better knowing that you have been a runner for awhile! It sorta sounded like you just decided to run a half. Who's your CC coach? I know a few in the Houston area. Good luck with your training! Let us know how your long run went.
