soy protein powder-good or bad?

HI everyone! I noticed a thread lower down asking a question about whey protein powder and have been thinking about incorporating soy powder into my diet as a way to get more protein...I am training for my first marathon and I know I am not getting enough.

Anyway, my question is...what do you think about it? I noticed people had bad things to say about the whey powder. My problem is, I don't eat much meat because I just don't like to, it grosses me out. I was a veggie for years and eat some meat now(mostly fish) but I still think it's nasty.

If you do like soy powders, do you use them as a snack or meal replacement? Any help is appreciated, thanks alot guys!

I'm a near-vegan - no meat of any sort, little eggs and dairy, and I find it pretty easy to get plenty of protein. Most vegetarians get more than enough protein in their diets. So what is it about your diet/health that makes you feel you're not getting enough protein? It might be a good idea to log what you're eating for several days to see if this is really an issue before adding highly processed soy protein powder (or any other kind of protein powder) to your diet. If you do need to add protein, it makes more sense (health-wise) to add it in the form of real food: eggs, dairy, legumes (including fake meats), whole grains, and nuts are the best vegetarian sources.
