lunch for a highschooler

I run cross country for my highschool. I was wondering whats a good lunch for running that relatively easy to make. I cnat really cook anything big and only have 40 minutes for lunch. I do have the option to drive off campus for lunch so if there is any healthy things at fast food restaurants give some of those suggestions too.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwich, Turkey sandwich, raw veggies, baked lays, pretzels, fruit.

Subway, Quizno's, Taco Bell (seven layer bean burritos/bean burritos).

Actually, the bean burritos are not that bad- I forgot how many grams of fat. But if you have to eat fast food, it would be a good option. I think the seven layer has the sour cream and cheese. The bean burrito is just the beans.

Subway has good options because you can also monitor what they put into it. I usually get the veggie sandwich. Chick Fil-A (sp) has a grilled chicken sandwich on a wheat bun.

well i know you said you only have one period of 40 minutes, but is there any way you can eat 2 meals during school because i dont think just one is enough for a cross country runner. i have breakfast (LOTS of fruit and then a bowl of cereal) around 6:30, lunch#1 at 10AM and lunch#2 at 1PM. track ends around 5, and i have more fruit and then "lunch"#3. and then i have dinner at home with the family usually at 7:30PM

for my "lunches" these are some of my favorites

1. crunchy PB on whole wheat, with 2 big carrots
2. turkey and provolone on whole wheat w/ lettuce and tomato. with a side of red bell pepper slices
3. avocado + onion + tomato + lettuce sandwich (SO yummy. i actually bring in a whole avocado and prepare it in the math office in my school. people look at me weirdly, but i know theyre just jealous lol)
5. tuna + onion + tomato + lettuce sandwich
6. sometimes a frozen burger like MorningStar vegetable burger, on bread with the works. and then mixed veggies on the side
7. and of course,
Dinner leftovers! ex. pasta with sauce and lots of vegetables, or salmon, or chicken burger etc.

i eat a LOT but i dont gain weight and it helps me run better being this well-fueled

Jaysus you have 40 minutes for lunch???? ****.
In high school (back in the dark ages of the late 90s) we had a 25 minute lunch period--and that included the time it took to go to your locker, go to the cafe, stand in line to buy something, eat, and get back to class....All told I never had more than 10-15 minutes tops to actually eat. And nobody was allowed "off campus."

Fascists.

Hey, I still have that going here at my high school. We have 20 minutes for lunch and no "off campus" or any goodies like that. Everyone practically runs to the lunch line because if you're in the back of the line you basically don't get to eat. It sucks, but oh well.

I just had to compliment you, as you are one of few who seems to fuel thier body! So many runners post their diets and I gasp at how little they are actually eating. You mentioned your also in highschool...Bravo keep up the healthy outlook!

What would you call the late 70's when I went to HS, then???

We barely had enough time to go the cemetery across the street, drain a six-pack, burn a few bowls and scarf some TastyKakes, before dragging ourselves to American History most of which was apperently un-written.

Wow.. We had 55 minutes and my friends and I usually had a spare right before or after lunch, so we'd get almost 2.5 hours all in all.. We often drove 40 minutes each way to eat at our favourite diner.. But then again, I'm in Canada, not sure how much of a difference that makes, and I graduated only 4 years ago..

For lunches, I'd stay far, far away from Quiznos.. The nutritional info is hard to find but you'd be AMAZED at how horrible even a turkey breast sub is for you.. Stick with Subway, Quiznos is scary.. Even the NI that you can find usually is for the sub without any sauces, cheese, etc. Just a bun and a couple slices of whatever meat.. Maybe some lettuce..

thank you!

its very important to me to eat healthy. so many of my nonrunner friends who eat lunch with me think i eat way too much food, and they are surprised that i actually take the time to make my own meals. I should.be the one who is surprised, because some of them either eat nothing or just a bag of chips for lunch!

i love going to stop&shop to stock up on food especially fruit. and my parents are willing to buy these things for me, but i have to pay for running-related things like energy bars/gatorade (which i dont buy that much anyway because i prefer fruit. its amazing how much a few grapes can energize u in between XC workouts).

its a little hard at home because my parents only can make good dinners about 3x a week (they are busy) so i am pretty much on my own the rest of the days. my younger brothers either eat waffles or cereal, but i have to make myself something with lots of vegetables and carbs and maybe meat. i make some for my brothers too but they would rather have froot loops lol. its hard (not to mention the fact that i have 9834983 hours of HW) but the way i figure it is that the work is worth it because i'm getting healthy and fast, and i feel better about myself

la la running,

a typical week is

sunday-easy recovery 7-10 mile run

mon-ladder workouts (ex .5 miles, 1, 1.5, 1.5, 1, .5) hard. about 6-7 miles worth

tues- tempo run 30 mins

wed-a harder workout like monday, ex: 4x 2000m

thurs- LSD ~45 mins so about 5 miles

friday-rest day, but sometimes in PE class i have to run 2 miles (i do it very slow)

saturday- race day usually 5k

i think its generally anywhere from 25-35 miles a week

we also do hills/strideouts after some workouts, and maybe one ab workout a week (i do ab workouts on my own anyway)
