High Carb Drinks

I'm thinking about going all liquid before my next marathon. What are some good high carb. drinks? (must be easy on the stomach!)

Yes, my DH who is into ultras drinks ensure or boost, just as you suggested, merigayle. I myself have taken canned fruit and blended it with apple or orange juice. I only use the non syrup kind of fruit and the unsweetened juice. Sweet wnough.

A very unusual idea. I have only ever heard of people with some form of jaw injury using a liquid diet. I expect you can probably stay healthy on a liquid diet but what on earth do you hope to accomplish and why do you think a liquid diet is the best way to do it?

Definitly drink an Ensure prior to your race then! try it before your next longish run (depending how close you are to race day, not sure how long you will be running). I have only had the chocolate flavor, but one of my friends loves the vanilla.

Why not go a couple of steps further like tying your ankles together and wearing a blindfold?

Its a much more effective way of sabotaging yourself.

BAP, why not read the thread before opining?

This is a totally worthwhile request. Mind you, in the last "few hours", you really don't need much anyway. The fuel you'll be using for the race is already packed away in your glycogen stores and fat stores. Go with something simple and small.

But, until this clarification, I might have posted something similar to BAP. It pays to specify a timeframe in request posts like this to avoid misunderstandings. "Going liquid" as a diet manuever during training would be kind of weird.

Just make sure the sack is Dri-Fit.

Ensure is on sale at Walmart this weekend. Whoohoo.

Sorry, I guess the timescale was clarified before I responded.

What was it that you ate prior to previous marathons? Eggs or a pasta dish with garlic in it the day before a long run are enough to have me spend most of the race in the portajohns.

I would skip the Gatorade before. You'll get enough of that during the marathon. Too much of it makes me queasy.

I always have oatmeal about 2 hours before and a banana about half an hour before.

However, don't try anything new before a marathon.

Going back to the day before...what do you normally eat?

thanks, I'll look into them.

I'm with bigapplepie all the way. I think a lot of GI stress comes from the fact that people radically change their eating habits before the race, from new foods to excess foods. That small percent increase in performance from carboloading is compromised if you have GI issues.

I'd stick with what you normally eat. If you still get GI problems, I'd suggest instead of eating something different, eat less.
