Great choice, way to go!

Thanks everyone for all of the posts. I am going to try going vegan right after Thanksgiving. I think I have an advantage living near a major metro area so there are lots of vegan, vegetarian, and ethnic restaurants and grocery stores around. I'll let you know how it goes.<HR>

eek a pound a day. I'd put my diet through fitday if I were you, just to suss out whether you're getting enough calories and nutrients. The recommended amount you should lose per week is ONE pound, so to lose seven sounds slightly crazy. It's probably just water weight, but even so, it sounds very unhealthy.

I'm a vegan runner too. Haven't had any problems until recently and I'm not sure whether this is related to my diet. I've been having chest pains and weird heart palpitations during my runs and my race performances have gone backwards majorly. I'm going to see a doctor today about that.

I don't think it's that hard to eat well on a vegan diet, just so long as you eat a variety of foods, take those B12 supplements and most importantly eat enough. The protein issue's never been a problem for me. I easily eat 90-100g per day just from eating when I'm hungry. I probably eat 3000 calories most days to fuel my running, so as long as I manage that side of the equation, the protein seems to work itself out.

Oh yeah, there's a website specifically devoted to vegans who are into fitness. There are 2380 members (though I doubt that many are active) and heaps of great advice. Everyone should join up http://www.veganfitness.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=22[/URL" target="_blank"> and visit the running sub forum. Weightlifting seems to be the main attraction of the site, but there are still lots of vegan runners.

Hi Bruncle,

Thanks for your concern, but I'm totally fine. I lost the 15 pounds or so right away, and that was 3 months ago. I have maintained the same weight since then. I eat all day long and definitely get enough calories and am not trying to lose weight per se, it was just a nice benefit Before that, I ate a ton of dairy (skim milk, yogurt, some cheese, etc.) and once I quit that, the weight peeled off. Despite what the dairy industry brainwashes us with, I personally do not believe their claim that 3 servings of dairy a day will help you lose weight. I followed that for years and carried a spare tire around my waist. Once I stopped dairy, I lost the weight.

I'm so happy to see there are so many others out there! This is great!

I love cooking vegan - it's so great to discover new foods and learn to cook new things. There are a lot of great cookbooks out there (I recommend Isa Chandra Moskowitz's books, especially for new cooks) to help get started. Since going vegan, I've discovered a whole new world of food, especially spices (now spices are kind of an addiction - I've got quite the collection).

I don't really find it hard to eat well after you figure out what exactly is and is not vegan. I do get **** for my choices sometimes, but not from the people in my life who really count, and that's all that matters in the end anyway.

I didn't lose weight either (I don't need to), but I really think that's because I'm determined to be able to make the same desserts vegan that I used to have - so vegan cupcakes and brownies and such are staples at my house (hey, I eat very well otherwise, I can have dessert ).

Awesome jobs on the marathons folks! I'm hoping to run my first next fall.

I Love Isa's books and website! Lots of the recipe's in VwaV have become the new staples in our home. I found a banana bread recipe on her website that I made last night, and it was so good after strength training early this morning.

I love Isa's banana bread! I've made that before. I'm making the Eggplant Caviar (not actual caviar) and Sweet and Savory Guac from her website for Thanksgiving (unfortunately I'm only in charge of appetizers, so I'll probably eat a LOT of my own dips for dinner). I've made these both before, and they are good post-run snacks too. All fresh ingredients, and some good quality fats and carbs.

I'll probably also make the banana split brownies from VwaV, as they are also always a hit (and even after I told everyone they were vegan ). Top those with some Soy Delicious...dessert perfection. Not good post run, but reallllllly good for every other moment in life .

There are also several muffin recipes in her new book that I plan on trying out post-run. "Cupcakes" is a relative term...there are several healthier recipes in there that I would classify as muffins.

Yes those are excellent as well! I add in a ton of raisins (I love them), but other than that I use the recipe as written (I used a fresh pumpkin once for them, it tasted great, but I won't do it again because it was so difficult to get the meat out). That's the best part about Isa's books - they are great as written, but it's also fun to add different things and experiment and usually it turns out great too. On the ppk forums, there are also so many great suggestions as to what other people use (and recipe corrections, which has been invaluable to the new Cupcake book, since it's still in the first printing). And the food photos some people take are absolutely amazing. I need to practice!
