Yuk - "Macaroni" and "cheese" - who eats this stuff?

Hi,

I've been living outside the US for eleven years now and my eating habits have changed dramatically, for the better.

My wife was given a few boxes of Kraft "Macaroni and Cheese Dinner" today and we cooked some up. I hadn't had any since leaving the US and was looking forward to it as a treat.

Yuk, what a disappoiintment. The "Macaroni" is really some sort of laboratory experiment intended to create an edible sponge. It's just a bleached white flour-like substance that swells to about five times it's original size when boiled, giving the illusion that there's actually something there to eat.

The "Cheese"... my god, what is this stuff? Whey powder with artificial colors and flavors.

And then they have the nerve to put the word "Dinner" on the box. ???

So, I'm wondering... do any of you eat this stuff regularly and do you actually consider it "food"? Is there anything good about?

For a runner, I think it's more useful for hydration than carb-loading. But then, you could just drink water...

Funny thing is, Kraft is a German company and they would have a hard time pushing this stuff over here. My mother had a couple boxes of the microwave version (for those who can't be bothered with all the fuss of actually boiling the other version of fake pasta noodles, I guess) with her last time she was here and that was something I wouldn't even try on a dare...

Kraft a German company?

They're an American company based in Glenview, IL (suburbs of Chicago.)

The blue box Mac 'n Cheese you are referring to is incredibily popular with children. I don't know many adults that eat the Kraft version.

Homemade Mac 'n Cheese on the other hand is very popular in the south and can be delicious in properly made.

That processed stuff is usually favored by poor college students and kids. However, real homemade mac and cheese is fabulous! Try it after a run sometime (it has carbs and protein, maybe even at the 4:1 ratio) -- you'll be in heaven!

I'm not to proud... I <3 Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. With a hotdog on a bun w/ ketchup. That's right. Totally processed, totally chemical, totally yummy.

I had it for the first time in years (must be 10) and i absolutely loved it. I felt no guilt whatsoever eating it and enjoyed every mouthful. I've even had it again since then, and still, i did not feel guilty. This, coming from someone who is very picky about eating the right foods. But, then, think about it........every once in awhile we have a dessert that has no nutrition value.....is just tastes yummy.....so why not have the occassional meal to. Sometimes, i think we are just way too hard on ourselves.

Every once in awhile, when I am too poor to buy something "healthy", or too lazy to drive for something....I'll eat that and love it. It is what it is....
As for being horrified, oh my heavens, stay out of the boxed, processed "food/dinner" aisles entirely. There are a lot of alternafoods out there, where you mix water with odd powders, etc, and a semblance of the advertised food item is concocted. It's not supposed to be "real"; it's supposed to be exactly what it is. They're 4/$1.00 on sale. You get what you pay for: a cheap meal!

I ate Mac and Cheese a lot in college because I couldn't afford much else, and I liked it better than Ramen.

My husband still likes it once in a great while, but now doesn't buy the stuff with the powder, only the pre-mixed sauce stuff that you squeeze out (I'm not sure how this is more grown-up or less gross...but whatever...).

A lot of people (myself included) would never have been able to afford college without Kraft Dinner. I can probably show 100 different ways to prepare the basic package. In my day they typically cost $0.10 per box so dinner could be served (including meatballs) for under a dollar.

The things we loved as kids are rarely as enjoyable when we become adults. I loved boxed M&C as a kid (okay - we still do it once in awhile, but only the extra creamy version ) I also loved spaghetti O's and the ravioli stuff in a can as a kid too, but that is REALLY disgusting now. Way more disgusting than the mac&cheese.
