Marion Jones' teammates might pay consequences too

The international track federation's council have recommended that members of the 2000 U.S. Olympic relay teams on which Marion Jones competed be stripped of their medals.
Jones returned her three individual medals after admitting last month she had used banned anabolic steroids before the Sydney Olympics. She also won a gold on the 1,600-meter relay and a bronze on the 400 relay.
The International Olympic Committee's executive board will consider the recommendation at its meeting next month.
Do you think Marion Jones' teammates should be stripped of their medals?
sorry to say yes they should a member of the squad violated the rules and they all get to pay the price for it.
goals for 2011:
break 19minutes for 5k
break 2:42 for olympic triathlon probably Anthracite olympic
break 3:16 for marathon ( a long shot but it's fun putting yourself out there)
I think they should be stripped of their medals just like Jones. That's how team sports work. It makes you accountable for your teammates actions, as well as your own. If they lose their medals, will they be given to the 2nd place team? How does that work?
I think the second place team does get the gold medal in that case.

While I agree that in a team sport you are accountable to each other, I also think that her use of banned substances effectively made this an individual event. It was a totally selfish act and she alienated herself from the team. They should not have to face any of the repricussions. I think the IOC should compare the times of all the runners who ran each respective leg to determine who recieves the medals.
yeah but it is still a 4 person race. unfortunately 1 person violated the rules so the team is disqualified

I know in college if one member of the team tests positive for ANY banned substance the team is punished and not just the individual. So as a team member, you keep everybody in check or else you run the risk of losing everything you worked for over the past year.
Also, I find it hard to believe her teammates were completely blind to what was going on and if that is the case, they should be taught a lesson so future competitors don't make the same mistake.
I didn't realize before that the silver medalist in Sydney, Greece's Katerina Thanou, was part of a doping scandal at the '04 Olympics. According to the IOC president Jacques Rogge, medal winners would only be upgraded if they had a "clean" record, which Thanou does not. Looks like no one will get Marion's gold medal. The IOC's next meeting is December 10-12, so we may hear differently, but I doubt it at this point.
Good point, Sara. I doubt they were unaware of what she was doing. I just hate to see this happen to the rest of the team ![]()
In this scenario, think they would then look to the Bronze medalist (or fourth place finisher, and so on) to find the athlete who ran the quickest race and has a clean record?
I would think they would do that, but from what I read in Sports Illustrated the other day it doesn't seem like they have any intention of moving around the medals. If Thanou, the second place finisher, had a clean record I think things would be different, but if you can't move her up then you can't really do much. It's unfortunate for those finishing in 3rd, 4th, and 5th that are clean athletes. I wonder how they must feel about this situation.
An update: After delaying the decision, the International Olympic Committee formally stripped Marion Jones of her five Olympic medals today, wiping her name from the record books. The IOC also banned her from attending next year's Beijing Olympics in any capacity and said it could bar her from all future games. Ouch.
Wow. You said it...ouch! I can't imagine getting stripped of 5 medals and basically everything I worked my whole life for. She made the decision to use banned substances, but a part of me still feels bad. Hopefully future athletes will learn from this and other similar cases going on right now.
Any word on her relay team? I didn't see anything in the news about them...
I haven't heard anything on the team either....but to throw in my vote, I would have to say that they should lose theirs also.
