Why did you go Vegetarian?

Just wondering why people went vegetarian. Is anyone a Vegetarian and also eat low carb? (not trying to start a debate just wondering)

I have started eating more like vegetarian (some fish and a little chicken) and definitely feel like I have more energy. But was it hard to give up meat entirely??

Thanks in advance!

Re: Why did you go Vegetarian?
I am mostly a vegitarian. I don't keep meat in the house and I choose a meat dish about half the time when I eat out.

I never really choose the lifestyle, I just was never a real big meat eating person....and I have tried. Steak is just to plain for me, I hate the taste of pork, and I can't stand the smell of fish. Also, I really don't like anything with bones in it. I do like hamburgers, chicken, and turkey though. Oh yeah, I don't like dark meat or skin.

I really became a 90% vegitarian when I started to seriously date my fiance who is a vegitarian. It is just easier to make one meal for the both of us then to make two meals.

Re: Why did you go Vegetarian?
I went vegetarian mostly for ethical reasons. I had read too much to not pay attention anymore. There was a point where I just found out too much to be comfortable with putting meat in my body anymore. Ignorance is bliss, I suppose. I'm doing my best with the vegan thing, but it's a lot easier to slip up there because there are so many hidden animal products in food.

To answer your other question, I didn't find it hard to give up meat entirely. Before I was totally veg, I hadn't eaten red meat for about 10 years. I found it easy to give up the rest, but I also prepared myself with replacement food beforehand. I think it would be more difficult if suddenly one day you decide to not eat meat anymore and you don't have an idea of what to replace it with. I did a lot of nutritional research to make sure I was eating a proper mix of nutrients.

I don't do low carb...but I think it would be interesting to hear about if someone was vegetarian and low carb.

Re: Why did you go Vegetarian?
I am a vegan. I made the choice to go vegan about a year ago. I also try to eat only organic produce. Personally the more I became aware and informed the scarier the food supply in this country appears to me. I try to mainly eat fruits and vegetables and legumes and avoid the pastas, grains, and processed foods. I have never felt better. If you are interested in reading more about this I would recommend a book by Dr. Fuhrman Eat to Live. Re: Why did you go Vegetarian?
I went veggie 18 years ago when I was pregnant with my first DS.

My sense of smell was greatly enhanced by being pregnant and I could smell what meat really smells like as I walked through the grocery store.

When pregnant with my second DS, I couldn't eat eggs. Texture. Ugh.

Now, as I'm no longer having children, for me it's a habit and ethics thing. I would no sooner eat a puppy, rat, cow, fish, pig, snail or any other animal than I would a human. We're all animals.

I eat little meat because of all the hormones and antibiotics that are added to the meats. If I do eat meat it is organic and the only red meat I will eat is a buffalo every once in a while. I prefer fish over any other kind of meat. I eat a lot of tofu and soy products and lots of eggs (whites mostly).

I have been vegetarian since i was a young teenager and visited a cow farm. It was horrifying. Then, a few weeks later i visited a chicken farm with intense overcrowding. I was so horrified i stopped eating all meats and never looked back.

Re: Why did you go Vegetarian?
Started over 20 years ago. As a cyclist then, I had cut out all red meat for a training diet, still eating poultry and chicken. A little later, I sold everything I owned and returned to school where I could barely afford the rice, beans, and veggies. All meat was gone over a period of three years, with seafood going last. My largest strength gain was another 2-3 years later when my body fully acclimated. I believe there was dip in energy level for a while but that could have been part of the diet learning curve.

In a short time I realized I could live a healthy life without it. It became a spiritual pursuit over time and has just deepened.

Low carb is just silly and dangerous. Moderated carbs just makes sense.

I just couldn't stand to eat my freinds anymore. I was always a vegetarian before I knew what a vegetarian was, I never liked meat.

Re: Why did you go Vegetarian?
I never made a conscious choice to become vegetarian, I had a friend who was learning yoga from a group of Seiks, and he brought me some of their infomation on being vegetarian. I read it and though I was ignoring it, but it must have settled in my subconscious because shortly thereafter I found I couldn't make myself eat meat. I became vegetarian without even knowing why.

It took another 13 years until I became vegan (about 4 years ago), and vegan was a conscious choice. I have come to believe that animals are not ours to use, or to kill for fun or convenience. It was never hard to give up meat, for me to contemplate eating meat makes me feel ill, probably how most people would feel contemplating eating human flesh.

I've never considered going low-carb, but I have become more selective about the carbs I choose as I've learned more about nutrition.

Re: Why did you go Vegetarian?
I am a huge meat eater, but I have a friend who was a vegetarian, then vegan, and has been on an all raw diet for about 6 months now. He claims that he feels better than ever. I would think that eating averything raw would cut back on the carbs (or at least starches)naturally. Just a thought.

Re: Why did you go Vegetarian?
I am on meds for lowering blood pressure. A close friend had died of a heart attack while playing golf on the Vineyard. Shortly after learning of that, I had a regular apt to see my PCP.

I asked if there were anything I could do, besides the meds, to lower BP.

He said "lose 50 lbs (I'm 5-10 and 172" so by BMI scales technically oveweight) or become a vegetarian.

I figured the second choice would be easier to do than the first.

I've been "slammed" by the vegetarian police for making the claim while still eating meat that swims but I am working on that, too - I really, really like sushi and sushimi!!!
