Late Dinners

Is it really that bad to eat your dinner late? I'm essentially eating right before I go to bed because of the time I get back from my weekday runs. I've heard this is not good - but I've also heard that calories are calories, regardless of what time they are consumed.

Because of my work schedule, i do not eat dinner until around 8pm most nights, and i go to bed at 9;30 too
That's my only option. I do try to eat small meals throughout the day so i am not eating a huge meal at night.

Metabolism does slow down a bit at night...so does digestion, etc. - I think it's ok if you have no other choice, as long as you don't eat too much. I can't sleep well if I'm stuffed but I HAVE to have a snack before bed or I can't workout/run in the am (I'm up 5:30-6:00 to fit it in).

I'm there with merigayle.

Due to work, kid pick-up, and helping with her homework, I don't usually get dinner on the table* until 7:30 at the earliest.

I just tell her that Mom & I learned to eat later when we were in Spain, and it stuck.

I also send myself to bed around 10PM, to do my Pre-Dawn Patrol at 5:30AM.

* Yeah, I'm the Dad, and I make dinner every night.

Calories are calories. Yes, your metabolism is a bit slower overnight, but that's regardless of whether you ate or not. You still burn the same amount of calories in a 24 hour period no matter what time you have dinner. If you don't have time to eat until before bed, that's not really a big deal, as long as you're not eating too many calories. I think the recommendation not to eat after a certain time in the evening has more to do with late-night snacking after dinner than it does to eating dinner late.

A lot of days I cant eat til late also, but like merigayle I eat small meals and snacks all day. The thing I do like about eating late is Im not starving when I wake up and can manage to run for an hour without anything first.
