Peanut Butter Recall

ConAgra Foods Inc. has extended its recall of all peanut butter produced at a plant in Georgia by more than a year, back to October 2004, the Food and Drug Administration said Friday.

The recall covers all Peter Pan peanut butter and all Great Value peanut butter beginning with product code 2111, including peanut butter toppings.

Peanut butter has a long shelf life, and the FDA's announcement reflects the ongoing investigation, said ConAgra spokeswoman Stephanie Childs. Any peanut butter matching the recall, regardless of the date, can be returned to the place of purchase, or customers can send the lid to ConAgra for a refund.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 425 people have fallen ill from the outbreak of salmonella that has been traced back to the plant in Sylvester, Ga.

The FDA warned consumers who have purchased any of the products since October 2004 to discard them, and not to eat any Peter Pan or Great Value peanut butter with a product code beginning with 2111.

ConAgra on Feb. 14 recalled all Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter made at the Georgia plant after federal health officials linked the product to an outbreak that began in August. At that time the recall applied to all peanut butter made since December 2005.

To obtain a refund, consumers can return the product to the store where they bought it or mail in lids with their names and addresses to ConAgra Foods, P.O. Box 3768, Omaha, NE 68103.

I guess that will devastate those hoarding peanut butter for 2 1/2 years!

So, can I sue ConAgra since I got a tummy ache in December of 2004 and I'm quite certain I ate some Peter Pan right before I got sick?

Geez... TC

P.S.--Can I sue ConAgra for producing all that **** junk food they foist on our kids that I have to battle every day?

My sister had 2 of those jars on her shelf that she had just bought a month ago. One was half eaten and yes...everyone in the family had been fighting some "stomach bug" Thank god it was not any worse

A plea from ERs around the US: Please don't go to the ER thinking you have salmonella poisoning unless you are actually experiencing signs and symptoms of it. Y'all wouldn't believe the number of people we've had coming in thinking they have it just because they ate some of the peanut butter. Just about everyone I know had a jar of the bad stuff, but that doesn't mean we all have salmonella poisoning! :P haha

DH & DS like Skippy creamy peanut butter. I like Trader Joe's crunchy. It's just peanuts and salt.

Speaking of peanut butter, how can Skippy have no transfat when it contains partially hydrogenated soybean oil?

Just like that fake butter spray has "no calories". When you use one serving size it's so small "they" don't have to count it, but if you use more than that, watch out. (Buyer Beware)

butterfly is correct.

It does have transfats. However, according to their serving size, how ridiculously small that may be, there is less than .5 grams of transfats. I hate that the FDA allows them to play games like this with people's health.

transfats: yes, look at the labels, to me it only truly has NO transfat if there is NONE in it!
and there is NO acceptable amount of transfat, none. Its pretty easy if you read the labels to have good snacks, even ice cream, chips, pastries, etc as long as you read the labels, or make them yourselves....
try peanut butter that is 'just peanuts' its great. Then go back and try skippy or the other stuff, and you will hardly taste the peanuts and it tastes all 'icky' and kinda slimy.
My sister thought she was doing me a favour as I 'run' and so when I went to visit she bought LIGHT Peter Pan and it was gross!
the regular stuff is good for you too!

Um, one important point I left out, and I think I should have been more clear on this, is the fact that the FDA allows food labels to state 0% trans-fat if their serving size contains less than .5 grams. So if there's partially hydrogenated oil, there is trans-fats even if the food label says 0% trans-fat.
