More than 1/2. That's about 1 to 2 glasses per day.

That's what I try to limit myself to.

BTW -- I noticed a Beer thread. Why not a wine???? We could start one discussing those for less than $20 per bottle so that you can try a suggestion without breaking the bank. (I personally go for $15.00 or less).

Currently I have been enjoying South African reds. My current favorite is Thorn Merlo. Kind of spicy, not too fruity. Great with beef!

My goal less than $10.00 a bottle. I have occasionally spent up to $15.00. When I spend more than $10.00, it is usually for a double-sized bottle of something I like in the single-size.

Although you don't get the Moet and Chandon at that price, I think you can find some good drinkable wines without breaking your budget. I don't go for the MD 20-20 either (at least not since my early college days). I guess I am not really a Sommelier, just know what I like.

Has you tried Barefoot Cab? Not as rich as some more expensive Cabs, but very drinkable. Especially since locally, it goes for less than $5.00 a bottle!

I stated a red wine thread at the same time as the beer thread first appeared. Judging from the longevity of the threads, it's not all that hopeful for a new one.

I would love some red wine recipe ideas. I only drink white (I have TRIED to appreciate reds but rarely do). And I have a few bottles of nice reds left over from a party. (One Shiraz which I like most and the others with too much tannin for me to drink at all.)

I'd love any fun sweet or savory recipes that call for a good amount of wine!

Here's one:

Red Pasta Sauce: (serves 4)

8 -- 10 oz Canadian bacon, diced
1 med onion, diced
4-5 smashed garlic cloves (to taste)
1/8 to 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper (depending on how spicy you like it)
Kosher salt
fresh ground black pepper
48 oz can petite diced tomatoes
1 cup red wine
2 tsp dried basil (fresh okay, but add it at the end of the cooking and don't cook for too long)
1 tsp crushed rosemary
1 -- 2 tbsp olive oil

1) sautee onion, red pepper flakes, and garlic in olive oil until clear. I start with onion and red pepper and add garlic later to keep it from burning. Adding the red pepper at the beginning infuses the olive oil with the flavor.
2) add Canadian bacon and sautee for about 2 -- 4 minutes
3) add tomatoes, red wine and rosemary. Bring to gentle simmer. Cook about 5 minutes.
4) add dried basil
5) add salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for another 5-10 minutes until sauce is somewhat thick and chunky.
6) serve over your favorite WW pasta (I like angel hair)
7) Parmesan Reggiano is a great topping to this.

serve with a side salad and the remainder of your wine bottle.

A good rule of thumb I learned about cooking with wine I learned from watching the Frugal Gourmet some time back:

You should be able to drink the wine with which you cook. This excludes bad wine and off-the-shelf wine labeled as cooking wine.

Besides, you can sip a glass of your "cooking wine" as you prepare your meal to put more fun into cooking!

I really love Pellee Island Winery Merlot 2005,only $8.99 bottle. I just wish they sold it at more places because I've only seen it at one store in my area.

i got tired of the big fruity california cabs and have been trying some of the cheap french bordeaux. the lighter body is a nice change, but they just don't have the tannins. i wish there were a nice affordable red with a hefty dose of tannins.

barefoot is a good wine, made even more appealing by the fun cork.

I just pulled the cork on a good South African wine. The brand is Sebeka. Type is Shiraz Pinotage. Cost $7.00

Yum!

Great depth and it has more tannins than you would expect from an inexpensive red. Underneath the tannins, you can taste the fruit, although not overpowering. It is highlighted by cherries and a little black pepper. Dry, but doesn't curl up the tong.

We had it with a India-style spicy vegetable dish served on WW couscous. Great pairing.

I would give it 3.25 out of 4 stars!

The first Beer Thread started in April, 2002.

It has been re-started with much fanfare each year since then. I have it archived from then until the beginning of 2005. This "volume" a transcription, if you will is entitled "Beer: A Conversation" and is structured as such. If you opened it randomly - which is the best way - and started reading, you will follow it as a long, semi-linear conversation over the years, with characters and topics drifting in and out.

It currently exists as a 525 page, 7MB PDF, with another 150 pages (4MB) of Appendices.

Anyone interested, can pop over to the BEER thread and make a request or drop a comment on my blog.

Oh, in order to avert the hijack, let me add that D'Wife, formerly a jug/box wine kinda chick, has, over the years, evolved into an Ozzie Shiraz snob.

I blame myself.

She did taste some Chilean something-something over Easter that she liked; but can't remember what it was.

I usually drink $6-$15 bottles of wine, trying new things probabyl 1/2 the time and coming back to old favorites routinely, mostly Aussie wines.

A new U.S. one we've been buying more commonly is Crane Lake. Don't be put off by the price, its only $3.50-$4 a bottle, but very good.
My wife loves their Cab for reds and their Pinot G for white, and I really like almost all of it, (just nothing too dry to where a I pucker up or too sweet to were I get a sugar headache after one glass.)

I was told, purely rumor, that Crane Lake is so cheap becuase the wife got mad at the husband for whatever reason, they had a split and she got 1/2 the winery and is now selling dirt cheap, but purely rumor thus far I was also told that it is made by the same people that make two buck chuck for Trader Joes, but we don't have a Trader Joes, so again, purely rumor.

I don't think the vast majority of the beer thread is about how much one is willing to pay a bottle. . . Is that the only criteria for red wine?

I, myself, like a earthy Pinot Noir, and I would eat beans for a week to buy a good one. Any suggestions?
