Protein Powder (Whey) = Weight Gain?

I just started adding 1 scoop of Isopure whey protein powder to my monring cereal (Fiber One) about 5 days a week. This gives me an additional 25g of protein each day. I know I ate horrible on Easter (the same weekend I started the Isopure) and haven't been super careful since but my scale has jumped up like 4 pounds! Do you think this is a result of the Isopure?

Oh yeah it is. Protein shakes are used to build mass and they're high in fats. Also any protein you don't use turns to fat.

not all protein shakes are fatty!! you said you had whey? thats the best protein powder. you need to analyze the rest of your diet.

Ummmmm....not true. The average protien powder has approx 150 calories. 3500 calories equal 1lb, so I would say NO it's not the protein. You must be consuming more overall calories. Take a honest look at your whole daily diet. I bet you will find the chocolate bunnies to blame.

No it is not because of the whey powder. In fact, it is extremely unlikely you have actually put on 4 lbs of fat in less than two weeks from any cause. You would have to eat like a pig every day.

That said, the protein powder will add to your caloric intake approximately 4 calories per gram so the 25 grams is adding 100 calories per day. When you add calories to an otherwise energy balanced diet, you will gain weight. In other words, the protein is all going to fat.

The only alternative is to eliminate 100 calories of some other food. Protein powder is what most people call "empty calories" so, in order to not gain weight, you will be eliminating some real and healthful food in order to eat empty calories.

No. But any spare energy in the food you eat is converted to fat for storage for later, so you don't need to eat continuously to survive. Think of your fat stores like your car's gas tank.

I too think that rather than point the finger at the protein supplement, you should look at your diet overall. You might find fitday.com helpful in taking a look at how many calories you're actually consuming and your dietary/nutritional breakdown. Like someone mentioned, a 1/2 serving of the Isopure equates to an additional 105-110 calories to your daily intake.

I too use Isopure to supplement my diet in the mornings and sometimes as a b/f bedtime liquid snack -- I actually find it helps me control my hunger better, it enables me to add more protein to my diet, and I'm more prone to "eat" breakfast rather than skip it like I normally did since my stomach doesn't handle things too well in the mornings.

Additionally, perhaps you need to recalibrate your scale? Another reason for the perceived weight gain might be fluid retention. My weight easily fluctuates 3 lbs during the day so I wouldn't worry too much. Weigh yourself again a week from now and if you're still 4 lbs heavier, then start reassessing your diet/exercise...

How many grams of carbs in the whey powder?

Try L-Glutamine, BCAAs and Tarine. All healthy amino acids needed for vigorous exercise.

The Isopures are whey protein isolates and have 0 to 2 grams of carbs (no sugar) depending on the flavor you get. They also contain taurine (in their "amino acid blend") and L-glutamine per serving.
