Re: energy drinks?
I drink Red Bull in the AM before high intensity runs.

I don't drink coffee, so I can use the caffeine. The sugars and salts (electrolytes) are similar to Gatorade. The small can is a good size. I personally like the taste and the carbonation, although the carbonation is less than ideal for total optimal hydration since you really are supposed to have a full stomach for absorption rates and carbonation makes you feel fuller than you are, but I don't like running with a full stomach and I'm not in the desert or anything, so it is okay for me.

I don't believe it gives me any extra special powers or wings other than caffeine, sugar and salt though.

Re: energy drinks?
they're not energy drinks, they're stimulant drinks. Corey, it has no electrolytes. Gatorade is way beyond better that the red stuff. Here's this from Red Bull's website:

It has not been formulated to deliver re-hydration. Adequate fluid intake is critical during intense and long lasting physical performance. Without adequate fluid intake, intense physical activities may lead to dehydration. As Red BullŪ Energy Drink has not been formulated to deliver re-hydration, we encourage people who engage in sports also to drink lots of water during intense exercise.

Re: energy drinks?
I like redline rtd by VPX, but only drink 1/2 the can followed by a cup of water (I'm short/petite so don't need the full bottle unless I wake up extremely tired) about 1/2 hour before runs/workouts, on an empty stomach. I'm not plagued by headaches if I skip a day... no jittery feelings from too much caffeine. The site and bottle recommends taking it with protein but I don't find the need to. There are days when I wake up hungry and take it, and subsequently feel a tiny bit nauseous but this soon dissipates. Everyone's different so if you do decide to try it, follow the directions as stated on the bottle regardless of your size/weight/height. Cheers!

Re: energy drinks?
Clearly nobody should replace gatorade or water with red bull during a run, I certainly don't. But, there are 200 mg of sodium in a small can of red bull, source: http://www.bevnet.com/reviews/redbull/facts.asp,[/URL" target="_blank"> which is the same amount in gatorade endurance formula and is definitely an "electrolyte".

Would you also agree that coffee is a "stimulant drink"?

Re: energy drinks?
My 76 yr. old mom took a good spill a few weeks ago. Brought her to the E.R. to be x-rayed. In the bed next to her was a 16 yr. old gal, that was brought in by ambulance from her H.S. It seems she drank 3 energy drinks n 1.5 hours. (The ones called Cocaine, which I believe I heard they are taking off the market temporarily to re-name.) Anyway...when the Dr. came in, there were no pleansantries. No hello. Dr. just went off on this gal, about the stupidiity of her actions/never want to see her in here again for this, etc. etc. She had caffine O.D'ed. We we there for just under 5 hours. Her resting heart rate had still not gone below 120bpm.
Needless to say....the 1st thing I did was advise my 18 and 21yr. old's on this stuff. Of course they've had them, but it never occured to them either of possible dangers.
Something to think about. Just sayin'.

<HR>

I drink strong coffee about 1 hrs before I run but follow with gatorade and water. Coffee is a stimulant drink and diuretic. It's worth it to me because it raises the exertion perception higher but I also hydrate well. I also use to pop a caffeine tablet after the 1st hr into a 3 hr run.

CoreyH, you need at least 300 mg of sodium and more than that if you're sweating hard. Stimulant drinks outweigh hydration potential because of the diuretic ingredients.

Re: energy drinks?
I am not a fan of gatorade. Your talking about a drink with high fructose corn syrup as your sugar. This is difficult for your body to turn it into energy and can be hard on your stomach. I use Infinit Nutrition which I customize to me specifically. It has 3 different kinds of sugars: sucrose, maltodextrin and glucose. sucrose and glucose for quick energy. and the Maltodextrin for energy that kicks in a little later. I have no stomach issues with it and love it.
