Re: Alcohol
Bourbon or Scotch whiskey and water. It tastes good, goes down easy, and there aren't any excess calories in the mixer.

Rum is horrible for you if you're dieting.

Re: Alcohol
Weight loss and alcohol don't mix very well. I used to have 1-2 gin and tonics almost every evening. I cut that out and now only have the occasional g&t or a glass of wine with dinner, maybe once or twice a week. Not only is it empty calories, but it slows your metabolism, disrupts your sleep so you're not as rested and dehydrates you. I dropped 5 pounds without even changing my eating habits when I reduced the alcohol. There are great side effects...1. I feel better, and 2. I get a buzz much quicker when I do have a few.

Re: Alcohol
Well just over 2 weeks for me of having Vodka and diet Tonic instead of beer. I lost 5 pounds, I was stuck at 193 for 2 weeks and this did the trick. I can not go with out beer in the summer but from now on I'll only have it at the pub.

WOW, congrats on the weightloss Magnus! That's great. I haven't lost anything since cutting out the vino (not yet). Athough, I have been eating way more than I usually do and i haven't gained, so that's good. I do feel lighter even though the scales don't show a loss.

Again congrats on busting through the plateau.

Re: Alcohol
Does alcohol really have this profound impact on your metabolism? You all are scaring me...I'm eating 1500 cals a day, but since I REALLY love to drink, I factor alcoholic beverages in there...Is that going to slow down my metabolism so much I still won't lose weight???

Re: Alcohol
I'm not very good at abstaining. lol. I've cut down a lot though. It's hard when you work in nightlife. I'm going to keep trying ....

well, i know that your body will burn alcohol before it burns fat, so imagine how much fat you could burn if alcohol wasn't in your system.

i just look at it this way. iam a wine drinker. 2-4 glasses a day. now the chances of them being 4 oz are slim, but let's just say they are the measured '4 oz' that's 125 calories a pop (give or take a few calories). do the math and you have a lot of calories. i personally would rather have my calories in forms of nutritional content not alcohol content. also, alcohol really spikes my hunger and i end up eating another snack for the day or sometimes more than that. everyone is different though, to each their own.

Re: Alcohol
Finally after a month of no alcohol, the scale made a significant drop. I have been weighing daily and taking the average, since I know that daily fluctuations happen. I have been fluctuating between 134 and 137. Well this morning I was 130. Finally. The best part is- I have been eating more of the foods, I love. I feel great.

Re: Alcohol
This is all wrong...the real question is:
How much food needs to be eliminated to continue drinking?

I disagree. I have a great metabolism.

The thread, well, and randymar's pictures...are making me thirsty!

Re: Alcohol
According to my local newspaper's weekly doctor column, drinking may hinder fat metabolism, but the more often you drink, the less effect there will be. Also, drinking has a greater effect on metabolism in overweight people versus those of normal weight.

Re: Alcohol
I just read in Men's Health that you should opt for a heavier beer over light beer for the health benefits/antioxidants that heavier beers have. Of course you should probably limit your intake to just a few, but we all know that.
