Body Fat Scale, buy or bust?

So I'm now to the point where I understand that I probably need to measure my gains by BF% and not straight weight.

Are the home scales worth the purchase? I feel like most sites are geared toward selling their prodcut so i'm not sure how honest they are.

Re: Body Fat Scale, buy or bust?
I have a Tanita model, don't remember which one, but it is several years old.

My experience is that it fluctuates within 3% and I know it gets thrown off by things like hydration level, wet or very dirty feet and time of day (probably due to hydration). Plus, I have no confidence that the actual number I get is "correct" and I don't use it to compare to other people.

BUT I make it a point to weight/measure at the same time every day and I write down the results (not every day, just when it changes) and I can easily track my trends if I give it enough time to average out.

So don't try and use this to see "did I eat too much last night and am I fatter now" -- it absolutely positively will not tell you that. But I can clearly see that in six months of training I've lost 3% of my body fat and that is encouraging. It keeps me motivated to try and lower that number.

I have a tanita and found it was way off fancy bioimpedence equiptment from my former trainer, as well as very off the caliper method. Those two were the same, the Tanita scale was much, much higher. I guess you can use it to track trends but not accurate numbers?

I think you're right, merigayle, providing you keep conditions the same as far as possible (time of day, after bm etc.). Even then you get huge variability between measurements made at the same time (therefore identical conditions).

Re: Body Fat Scale, buy or bust?
i have the tanita and i agree, it's good for tracking progress, but not necessarily "accurate".

i've heard/read arguments that there is no known way to accurately measure body fat. some scientists feel even the most respected methods don't get it right. i still like to measure progress though.

Re: Body Fat Scale, buy or bust?
I bought my husband one of these and the body fat % thing is a load of cr@p. It says that I am 12% higher than my BMI calculation. I have dropped 10 # and 2 sizes in a year...it hasn't changed. I also have decent muscle mass for a girl (IMHO).

If I stand on it as a girl vs. a boy (in the user profiles) it changes by almost 20%. Now, if it was actually doing what it claims to do, why on earth would such a thing occur?

Re: Body Fat Scale, buy or bust?
@brandyk: I've seen the same thing. my girlfriend's numbers are way higher than mine and tend to vary more than mine. Men and women do have very different body makeups when it comes to fat storage, but I think the Tanita exaggerates it.

My Tanita has always been accurate to what they come up with at the doctor's.

The Ormon BF measurer-thingy-do is pretty accurate: w/ in 1% of the Bod-Pod I got at the nutritionist.

Re: Body Fat Scale, buy or bust?
The number I get from my Tanita is similar to the number I get from the handheld bioelectrical impedance device I use at the gym, and similar to the number I get from the skinfold device at the gym. I'm not convinced that any of these numbers are correct, because it seems to me that a 5'5" woman who wears a size 6 pants is not obese, but apparently I have 32% body fat so I am.

I don't think that BF scales are really worth the money. I bought mine because I didn't have a scale at all and it only cost me $25 with a coupon from Bed Bath and Beyond. The scale is accurate so I feel like I didn't waste my money, but I very rarely check my body fat % and when I do, it's more out of curiosity and not because I think the number has any relevance to my life or health.

Re: Body Fat Scale, buy or bust?
The Tanita scale I have is very good at measuring body weight (accurate within .2 lbs), but I wouldn't trust in on the body fat measurement. It specifically says (granted in tiny letters) in the instruction manual for mine that this measurement is not accurate for athletes. I would say save your money and buy a scale that gives good accurate weight measurement. And buy an old fashioned tape-measurer and regularly measure hips/waist/bust etc. This is usually a good indicator if the weight you're gaining/losing is muscle or fat-- works for me.

just a comment- you DO realize you could have higher than average body fat % while not necessarily being "obese", right?

Re: Body Fat Scale, buy or bust?
Or have a high body fat while not having large measurements or waist.
Body fat is percentage of weight... not the overall fat carried.
