Help me figure out calories burned while jogging

How realistic is the calories burned report on a Garmin Forerunner 305? I used to know the general formula for calories burned while jogging, but I forgot.

I weigh 187, and today I ran (as reported on my Garmin) 7.27 miles at a 9:23 pace, and it says I burned 1641 calories. Calories burned are usually exaggerated (especially on treadmills), so I was wondering if someone could give me some input there. Thanks.

I generally just assume ~100 cals per mile (unless its speedwork or hills or something). I don't think you can ever really calculate it accurately but that number seems really high.

Under resources is a calorie counter, I put in your numbers and it came up with 1074 calories. There is no place for pace, but as muzicgrl said average is about 100 per mile.

Another rule of thumb is 0.75 Kcal per pound Body Weight per mile which comes out to 1020 KCal for you for that run.

assuming, too, that the person weighs 150 pounds. Many female runners are way below that. In fact, if the average female is 5'4", she would be overweight!

I think my Forerunner 305 was over estimating calories burned (almost double!) until I updated my firmware .......go to the garmin website!

What was your heart rate like during that time? I know that when I'm running harder/faster than usual, or it's super hot out my heart rate will be higher. I could run the exact same route twice and the run when my HR is higher I will have burned a lot more calories. So if the 9 minute mile was a faster pace than you are used to, you probably did burn more calories.
