Reading your chart...2 in 12+ does not equal failure. So is all the 1 in 6 vs. 2 in 12 folks just looking to score 100?

p.s. thanks for the link it's great to see I'd ACE the entrance training!

Probably, and it's funny that most Soldiers do not max the test with 100. In a normal Army unit scoring 80%, or 80 points, in each event is considered a very good and respectable score.

BTW, the entrance requirements are much lower than you referenced. What you looked at was teh actual everyday Soldier standards to remain in good standing. You'd max the Army Physical Fitness test on every level.

I had no idea 6 min was below average for a H.S. athlete. Can that be true? When I was in school 12 min was considered great. In gym not in track.
So you're saying a 6 min mile is very average in your circles?

I was a miler in high school and my best time was about a 6:20. I wasn't a great runner, but I usually placed. For females, 6's were pretty good. The guys were usually in the mid 5's.

Don't know where most of you live but here, in the NYC suburbs, the MIDDLE SCHOOL boys that place in the mile race are running between 4:55 and 5:45. The 4:55 times are a couple of kids that are going do well in high school but the rest are around mid to high 5's. That's 7th and 8th grade! Six minutes and slower, the coach has you doing shot put or something else but not the mile.

How many middle schoolers can run a mile in sub 6 minutes with no training?

Maybe 1 in 50.

With training alot of high school males could break 6 minutes.
But most do not want to put in the hours to complete this task.

First of all, I know we all love running here, but people's pace in recreational road races is very, very far down on the list of important things wrong with this country.

Also, no one has said that 6 minutes per mile is fast. It's just a pretty fast pace for a recreational runner. If you don't believe me, just look at race statistics. If it were fast, it would not hold the appeal in the popular consciousness that it does. Not everybody is an elite, by definition.

As a matter of fact, I don't think there is a single elite posting on this board.

Denton- 13:48
Cougarcanyon - 4:05 mile in his prime.

In the 80's the rec runners were doing 20 mile training runs
at 6 to 6:20, and ten miles in 60 minutes was nothing for
a training run.

Maybe it got watered down. I don't look at modern race stats
to draw conclusions.

Problem is we're talking about modern race stats right now. It is 2007.

A 6 minute mile is what you do for a warmup before you race.

I've warmed up for races with runners faster than even the times you claim you've run. None of them ever warmed up with a 6min mile.

In soccer and similar sports that require constant stop and start running and accelerating(like basketball), it is not long distance endurance running that comes into play, but the ability to quickly accelerate, then stop and accelerate that is the most valuable skill set.

I am glad that you can run fast but you must realize that you are a freak of nature. (because of all the hard work you put in of course)

I was 27th place out of 225 runners in a recent 5k with a pace of 6:34 per mile. Now figure that less than 5% of people ever take place in a road race so I was racing the top 5% of Americans basically.

A 6 minute pace for one mile is difficult let alone multiple miles of them in a row.
