Help with Maffetone Training?

Hello All,

I am looking for some guidance on this maffetone training. I am 27, 6ft 1inch and weigh about 220. I currently completed my first 5k race this past week under 30 minutes. In the past I was able to complete these runs in under 22 minutes. I have been reading through the threads and keep on seeing Maffetone, so I purchased the book. I just have a few questions. My goal for the next year is to improve my 5k speed to anything better than 30 minutes. How many miles per week should i be putting in and how many days?

Thanks

I suggest going to the Basebuilding thread where there is a lot of good material from those using this approach. Read his book carefully, and the articles on his website (www.philmaffetone.com), and choose a different screen name ... only kidding

Also, check out the voluminous thread on low heart rate training by Jesse Leitner--he is the GURU. Great stuff. Read the articles he has posted. Nick

You're practically there. When you click on basic training, yours is now at the top of the list, since I've just replied. The basebuilding/low heartrate/maffetone etc. thread is about 3 down from the top, it has 18 pages and 400 something responses. Just click on it, read from the beginning, and in it there is a lot of info, links to the two previous archived threads, and also links to different articles, FAQs, etc. that are all worth reading.

Yes, but if you go to the cool running discussion forums, and click on the basic training forum, then scroll down to see the very long thread that is all on basebuilding/low heart rate training/maffetone, allen, hadd etc. you will get pages and pages of info from runners on cool running, and in there will be many references to the books and websites and other info. Have you read this very long discussion? I'm not trying to point you to something you've already read, but it seems like maybe you have not found it.

There is a lot of free, easily accessible information (and some not-so-good things here and there) on cool running. Maffetone's website has a lot too (www.philmaffetone.com) and Jesse's links on the low HR training pages. My favorite Maffetone books (other than his textbook) are In Fitness and In Health, Training for Endurance, and Fix Your Feet. Mittleman's book is a rehash of all I just mentioned. Not sure if Allen has a book, but he's a great speaker.
