Starting a streak-running regime with my 8-year-old

My 8-year-old son and I are embarking on a "streak running" regime (using the definition of streak-running set by the USRSA). So far we're 9 days in. I'm interested in corresponding with other streak runners as well as other parent/kid running combos.

I definitely don't advocate an 8-year old running every day.

My kids...12, 7, and 6 all run regularly. Typically they run 3-4 days a week and they run a lot of 5K races...some would say too many, but they really enjoy the races. They run with a youth running club that I help coach.

I'm no doctor, but I agree with mep. Not only is the kid growing and it is possible this could have a negative impact on his joints etc, but it is a lot of pressure to put on a kid to have to run everyday regardless of the weather, other commitments, wanting to play with friends, and maybe just not feeling like running one day but feeling pressured to get out there and run.

Re: Starting a streak-running regime with my 8-year-old
How many miles a day are you running?

Just so you know running every day does not necessarily make you faster. I have heard people who have 2,000 day streaks going of a mile a day or more. I don't know how they do it when they get sick,

Anyway I agree you shouldn't try to run every day. If your son really wants to do this maybe go for 30 days and then take a day off by celebrating the 31st day.

Re: Starting a streak-running regime with my 8-year-old
Jim Pearson, former US record holder at 50 miles and a two time Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier has one of the longer streaks in the US. His son decided that he wanted to run when he was maybe 11 (heavy emphasis on "maybe"). His son has run everyday for about 10 years now and competed in high school and college.
It's definitely doable, but the thing you want to remember is that kids' interests change. You need to be sure that your son wants to do it and that he's not doing it because it's something that you want to do.
Assuming I don't die or become paralyzed in the next two weeks my streat will reach the 20 year mark. I've found that I get over being sick or hurt more quickly if I run for a mile or two than if I don't. But I don't know that everyone works that way and you DEFINITELY don't want to drag an eight year old out to run a mile if he's got a fever or something. If that happens and the streak is really that important to you I'd seriously recommend lying.

Re: Starting a streak-running regime with my 8-year-old
Children should run every day. If you give 30 kids under 10 years old a wide open place and 3 or 4 kickballs, plenty of free-time and unplug ... basically everything... they will run.

As far as structured straight-line running on asphalt... I would encourage more general play, but would (and have) let them come along with me for a mile or two if they want to, and enter the local 5k's or kids races if they like, but not push it on them.

(we have 3. Not that it makes me an expert or anything.)

Re: Starting a streak-running regime with my 8-year-old
Actually Obsessor too words out of my mouth. I was going to say that I'm not quite 100% agsint kids running at all. Now, there are certain things might need to be adjusted. I've done several kids running programs in the past and found out that some kids actually just love to run! And with this prejudice of adults that kids should NOT run everyday, inhibit them from running everyday... Well, that's just as wrong.

Everyday would definitely put a lot of pressure--probably not now but later on when things get busy. But I'd much rather see parents encouraging kids to continue than discourage or go along with it. I sort of gave myself, a few years ago, that if not everyday, I'd give myself 4 days a month (one day a week) or off-days. So when things get busy, I'll take a day or two off but because I already give myself 4 off-days a month, don't feel as guilty. Yet, it sort of became a challenge to keep that to 4 days--I'd pace myself, push here and there; yet, take it easy here and there as well... How about give your kids, say, 10 off-days a month? Or every other days? I certainly am against putting pressure on kids at all; but at the same time, nothing wrong with a little bit of discipliine here and there either.

I strongly believe one of the best gift you can give to your kids is the habit of making running--or any other exercises--a daily routine. Don't make it sound like a chore or duty; make it a regular routine. They'll grow up accepting the same routine so much more easily then. I often think of what New Zealand's great Jack Foster said: "I don't train; I just go for a run."

Re: Starting a streak-running regime with my 8-year-old
I have a 9 year old who runs. My husband and I decided that every other day was good for him. He does either "pond loops" which are a 700 meter loop and if he says he wants to do 4, we stop at 3. Our other typical run is a 2.2 mile trek that me and him do together. We also have a hilly 30 minute trail run. He just did a 1 mile race in 6:25. (Too bad he ran his first 200 in 36)

I've seen so many kid runners be burned out or physically hurt so I don't leave it up to my kid because he does not know what is best for him. You know, children have the added physical stress that we don't have, namely growing.

It's not even in the best interests necessarily for a kid to go into high school with a reputation for being a great runner because, invariably, other kids catch up to him and it's a great blow to kids that are used to being the best trained and winning. Also, there is great pressure on the kid that goes in with a reputatation.

I know you're probably not thinking all this far in advance but I have lived it already. So I will err on the side of caution and give him a day in between runs to recover and I am confident he will be a better and more enthusiastic runner for it.

I don't think I would do a streak with an 8 year old. Sorry.

Re: Starting a streak-running regime with my 8-year-old
My 3 1/2 year old likes running. He likes to high five the runners doing the 5k's at our local park (Wash Park in Denver). And now that he sees the runners on the path around the park, he likes to go over to the park and run some on the path. We are talking about 100 yards at a time, then we sit down and take a break. We have watched some youtube clips of Prefontaine and Alan Webb, so he is Alan Webb and I am Pre, and we take turns passing each other. Oh, and the silver part of his Nike's make him "wicked fast."

I love that he has taken an interest in it.

Re: Starting a streak-running regime with my 8-year-old
I don't have any advice to add about running with kids (although keeping a kid's interest for that long seems like a challenge) but I can say keeping a running streak going is challenging but definitely doable by normal people with normal jobs.

I started my "joggling" streak on Jan 15, 2007 and am up to day 219. You have to think about the streak every single day and sometimes adjust plans to work it in. One time I was driving back from New York (to Chicago) and had to go running at 11:00 pm in Ohio after driving for 10 hours.

Luckily, I haven't been sick or had any significant injuries during the streak. There have been plenty of days where I've run in the rain, snow, bitter cold, and sweltering heat. But the streak keeps me inspired. It even gives me a sense of helping the environment because I've often run to places in which I would usually have driven.

Keep it up and keep us posted. You can follow my streak at my blog.

I haven't posted in a while and just wanted to update the discussion, if anyone is interested. We are now at Day 24 of our streak (it will be Day 25 if we go before the day ends, which we plan to before dinner). I'm not sure what's motivating him, but my son insists on getting out there every day. I have bent over backwards not to pressure him, but he wants to persist...so far. He asked me to buy him an Under-Armour jersey for cool mornings. Some days he really seems to love it, other days he just puts in the time. We do 1.2-1.8 miles. I'm hoping he'll want to try slightly longer distances soon, and he's brought it up, but so far not followed through. It will be interesting to see what happens now that school has started.<HR>

Thanks for the update. If no one else, I would like to know what's going on. Please keep up the update. You guys are doing great!

Re: Starting a streak-running regime with my 8-year-old
Hi Nancy,

I'm sort of going through the same thing with my kids. They have been watching my wife and I as they grow up run in races and they see kids their age running 5k's. Both my daughters are bent at getting out every day for a run. We go to a park that has some paved "trails" and some open fields. Everyday they put a sticker on their calenders to mark the days they have run. Yesterday they were running a bit tired. I told them that they should take today off and still put a sticker up on their calenders because it was a planned break.
It's funny how things work though. My oldest daughter who is nine had her first day of soccer today (I had forgotten about that) and probably ran three times as much as she usually does.
I'm very careful about them running. They see us run and then they come to us. When we run together I make sure we are all running at a conversational pace and not get out of breath. Like obsessor and Nobby said you have to keep it light and fun and they will keep coming back for more. Nice to hear about others running with their kids. We go almost every day and have never once seen any families out running.
