I know this post is about a year late, but I ran across this while trying to find my old discussion board (since the new merge with active.com). I am a 21 year old college track athlete (actually a thrower, not a runner!) I hurt my hip almost 2 years ago while throwing shot put at a meet. After a few very frusterating Dr.'s visits and months in PT trying everything I could I was getting more and more miserable. This June I had all but given up- not only could I not train the way I wanted to, I couldn't stand, sit, or walk comfortably. I had pain that was very deep in my left groin, along my underwear line, as well as extreme muscle tightness in my hip flexors and adductors. My parents made me go to another ortho who ordered a MRI arthrogram. They gave me the MRI on CD when I left the hospital and I went right home and stuck it in my computer. What I saw (and was later confirmed by the ortho) was a huge tear in the anterior inferior portion of the labrum. I went ahead and scheduled surgery, which I had on July 25th. I wanted to do it as soon as possible so that I can be in good shape for the outdoor season- it is my senior year of college. The surgery went well and the doctor found a 3 cm tear, which apparently is very large. After being on crutches for a few weeks and doing endless amount of PT exercises I'm doing well. I only have a tiny bit of muscular soreness left, which gets better everyday. My flexability and strength in the "bad hip" is almost 100% and I've been cleared for full practice. It's hard coming back since I developed this problem almost 2 years ago. I don't know how your hip problem is going, but if you are indeed struggling with a labral tear it will never get better on its own. The surgery was very successful for me, but I would make sure the Dr. has done it before. It is not a common surgery and you want someone who knows what they are doing. For me, having hip arthroscopy was literally life changing!!! Good luck with everything- Jane
