Re: Registered for a 1/2 Marathon - new runner - NUTS?
I actually bumped it up to 12 miles, one mile at a time for two weeks each, then a two week taper. Hal's theory is that adrenaline will take you the other 5K on race day if you are already capable of running 10. I 'd rather be sure.

Re: Registered for a 1/2 Marathon - new runner - NUTS?
I am glad I am not the only one who has already signed up for a 1/2 marathon! I started the end of July and started too fast and hurt an ankle so am now starting slowly in the C25K program and will finish the end of this month. I will be doing the 1/2 in April, so a few months after you guys! I found a beginners 1/2 marathon training plan on this site for a 12 week program, the longest mile is 12 miles. It does have a suggested base of 3-5 m 5x a week. I don't plan on starting that until abt Dec when I can work up to the recommended base.

On Hal's Program the most u run on one given day is 10 miles - so I never train for the full 1/2 marathon of 13.1 miles?

I used HH's Novice HM program for my 1st HM, and found the longest run of 10 miles was adequate to finish the race. If I had an extra week, I probably would have added one more long run of 11-12 miles just to feel a little more comfortable, but I didn't, and I finished with no trouble at all. I did, however, taper for two weeks instead of just one, as indication in that program. I wanted to be really rested for the big day. Seems to have worked well- I finished the race upright, and in under 2hrs!

BTW- I had only been running 9 months when I ran that race, and I don't think I was crazy to do it, so you aren't either!

Re: Registered for a 1/2 Marathon - new runner - NUTS?
If you started running in June and are planning to do this half in January, that's pretty doable. I'd have been concerned if you said you wanted to do a half in October or some such, but for January, you definitely have enough time! And following a specific plan is good, whatever one works for you, whether Higdon or any organized plan.

Also, 2:45 shouldn't be a stretch for you, since your 2.5 mile time is less than ten min. pace, and 2:45 is something close to 12 mins. mile pace. By the time you get to race day, you should be able to handle that easily. How did your 2.5 feel? If you felt pretty comfortable and could easily go faster, then no problem at all. If you felt as if it was a push, you might want to think about working a little on pace, but I'd still say you'll be okay. As your endurance improves, your speed will pick up too.

Good luck w/ your training!

Totally do-able - take it easy - Hal Higdons plans is very good but I would recommend you do the x training and the weights as well as the running as the plan is minimal - I used it peaked at a 10 mile run and ran my half in 2:35 .

You can also nip over to the newbie cafe and join the half marathoners training threads - we`re a friendly bunch and a lot of us or doing our first 1/2s

Wow...thanks!! I'm really excited. I'm on my own. I know a few people who are running it, and I was supposed to run with a friend, but she won't be running now due to injury. I'm hoping I can run w/my iPod...I don't know what I will do if I can't! But it's along Chicago's lakefront, so the view will be great.

schedule sent, by the way...

SOOOOOO? How did it go?????

Re: Registered for a 1/2 Marathon - new runner - NUTS?
So angelise22 how did the race go?

Lioness1- I don't know if I could run without the ipod either, but maybe you could try a few shorter runs without it and see if it is doable before not doing the official race- you might just do fine!

caltex- That would be great to cyber train! i think you are ahead of me time wise, I am more of a 28-30 min for 2.5-2.8 mi.

Hi all! How is training going, Caitex?? Tell, tell!

My race went AWESOME!!! I had such a great time, and will definitely be signing up for another one sometime in the near future! I'm even considering a full which I thought I NEVER would...gasp! The scenery was gorgeous (yes- I was able to run with my shuffle...my husband got me one of those new shuffles that clip as a "proud of me" gift)...and I finished in 2:26:09. My goal was less than 2:30 and I did it!!! I got an extra punch of adrenaline the last mile or so. I was sore for 2 days after, but now I'm fine and back running my 4 miles every other day.

You will have such an awesome time...and finishing is the BEST feeling...a huge accomplishment!

Re: Registered for a 1/2 Marathon - new runner - NUTS?
Nah, man. Like most of the others said - it's all doable. My story, so you can have one more... is that I started running on 28 May this year. I had a very low fitness level and about 30 pounds overweight.

Started with C25K and did my first 10k on 1 July in just under 60 minutes after 5 weeks on the program. Dis my first Half marathon on the 12th of August. I have done 1 more since then, a 24km trail run, a 42km circuit and yesterday another 20k race and I have a best half marathon time of 2h10.

So, not very fast and just aiming to run comfortably and finish, but if I can do it, so can you - and you have way longer to prepare for it.

Good luck!
