Advantages of Running at Night?

OK, all you night-runners out there and I know there are many. Why do you run at night and what precautions, if any, do you take or recommend? What is it that you like best about being an evening runner? I normally run early morning, but as my work schedule has crept earlier and earlier, I am finding my time squished more and more.

Don't laugh, but I remember one time reading an article claiming that evening/night time running was more "natural" for humans as this is the time when our ancestors had to face the awakening predatorial animals in their lands and RUN to survive.

So, maybe the night time IS the right time . . . for running?

Do tell.

Thanks, Liebling

Re: Advantages of Running at Night?
liebling,

What's your definition of "night"?

I often do my weeknight runs after dark - have a great 5 mile stretch of sidewalk well lit by streetlights.

Just this last Saturday night I did a 42 mile night run - started at 10pm and finished about 6am Sunday morning - on some fairly technical trails. That was my last "big run" before my next ultra - the Arkansas Traveler 100-miler on October 6th.

Yeah, us nutball ultra runners do LOTS of night running!

Re: Advantages of Running at Night?
I only run at night...12:45 to be exact, due to my work schedule. I don't know the advantages aside from cooler weather, which will become problematic in the fall.

I make sure to carry a bright light from my bicycle and clip a flashing blinker light on my shorts for cars from behind....but i still make sure to get off the road if any are coming.

As far as the natural thing goes...i have no idea. I'd venture to say if you are basing running on primitivist "naturalism", the type of running we do is far from natural. Primitivists probably ran in spurts for hunting, or fleeing predators, but not for extended distances at MHR.

Re: Advantages of Running at Night?
i typically run in the evening anywhere from 10 pm til midnite. i personally enjoy running in the evening more due to the fact that there is less traffic and the cooler temperatures. not to mention since i'm in college i get the joy of running past drunk people, which provides a good dose of entertainment. only downside to that is that every so often i get something thrown at me. luckily i have a 100 percent dodge rate so far.

its a different perspective at night than it is during the day, so i would recommend doing both because you get to see more than one side of your town/course.

Re: Advantages of Running at Night?
what I always liked about running in the evening is that I'm pretty much done with the day after my run. I can put my feet up and relax when I'm done as opposed to running in the morning and then having a whole day on my feet.. There have been times when running interfrered with my sleep, however, and that is the downside to running late in the day for me.

Re: Advantages of Running at Night?
Nighttime running

The good: It is cool in warm weather. Neighbors are less like to see you and think you are crazy. There are few distractions, so you can really focus on the run.

The bad: You may be attacked by giant bugs. It is colder in cold weather. Folks may not see you, so you could get crunched. You may not see the mailbox before you crash into it. You will most likely be slower if you are at all cautious.

I like to run at night, but it makes me a little nervous, especially those giant bugs.

Re: Advantages of Running at Night?
Why? As others have pointed out, it is a wonderful time to be out there and the world feels like a different place.

On safety: where I run, I see about a car a mile - but I still treat every one as if the driver just got kicked out of the local saloon. Oh, and watch out for the skunks - they never seem to hear you coming until you are right upon them!

Re: Advantages of Running at Night?
I frequently run in the dark, both in the early morning or evening as my schedule allows. Here's my comparison:

Morning
=PROS=
- Fewer cars on the roads
- I'm wide awake by the time I get to work
- My exercise for the day is done by 6AM!
=CONS=
- I'm not yet awake, and sometimes do stupid things like run across intersections without even looking for cars
- My pace seems to be slower
- My muscles are tighter and require more warm up time

Evening
=PROS=
- Warmer than mornings (good thing in Winter)
- Great way to burn off stress after work
- My pace is faster
- Muscles are somewhat loosened up already
=CONS=
- Warmer than mornings (bad thing in Summer)
- More cars on the road
- doesn't prepare you for that 6AM marathon start time

But for some reason I still prefer mornings, I think mostly because of the feeling of solitude and the "crispness" in the air.

Re: Advantages of Running at Night?
I like running at night. It's quiet, there's less traffic, less people to gawk at you. I sometimes run a trail/gravel road through a park that has lights on it. I run outside of the light, in the dark, so people don't see my and my night vision is not destroyed. I will also pick up a big stick and carry it and I carry a folding knife I clip on my fuel belt. I've trained to fight with a knife.
I'm still looking for a good full moon night to go run. I saw a lunar eclipse last month when I did, which was totally unexpected and cool to see. I like to run on trails and use a headlamp when there's no full moon.
I like to look down on all the losers who are sleeping while I run too.
My mind will want to get the better of me. I've always been afraid of the dark since I was little and my fears will try to take over my mind. I have to remind myself that the most dangerous thing in the woods is a human, which calms me down. But that's also the reason I carry a knife.

Re: Advantages of Running at Night?
In the winter, most cities are very good about clearing the snow off the streets, but the sidewalks have a lot of ice on them. If you run late at night or early in the morning when the traffic is light, you can usually run on the nice clear streets.

Re: Advantages of Running at Night?
I'm a vampire! I do my best training at 3:00 am. I like to have the roads to myself. I enjoy floating down busy streets through intersections that I know will soon be filled with the hussle and bussle of the awaking world. But at night they belong to me.

It's great! All summer while everyone was complaining about 90+ degree days I was enjoying the stillness of the cool night air. 75 was the hottest I can remember running. No cars, no people to deal with, no stopping. I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Re: Advantages of Running at Night?
I am not a big fan of night running personally, I would much rather run during the heat of the day (I know, thats crazy). Only problem with that, I don't know any races starting at around 3pm. Anyways, I tried a night run a couple weeks back, but unfortunately started BEFORE the sun set, so once the sun set and the temperature dropped about 15 degrees, I started getting cold and had to cut short my run by four miles (18 mile run). My suggestion to you is at least start AFTER the sun sets so the temperature feels like a constant temperature.
