Re: Who Runs Marathons Alone?
I definitely run them alone. For my first, I trained with my neighbor. But by the time the race rolled around, we were running at very different paces. We ran the first mile together and then parted ways and met up at the finish line.

In my 2nd marathon, I ran into someone I knew there who was looking for the same time goal as me. We started out together, but I was very happy when she ran ahead of me around mile 2 b/c she wanted to chat the whole time!! I was focused and did not want to waste my energy on talking so I was very happy to see her go. I ended up passing her around 20 where things fell apart for her. If you do run a race with someone - either do it as a fun run or do not chat the whole time. A race is very different from a training run IMO.

Good luck!!

Re: Who Runs Marathons Alone?
I'll say that I train and race alone although for my first marathon (marine corps '06) I met a very nice lady at the start that really was almost exactly my pace. I was really nervous and she got me through the first 23.5 miles. (Thanks Linda!) I started to crash so I told her to go without me and she made our goal time...i ended up 4 minutes over. She said I helped pace her, so I guess it worked for both of us.

My second marathon (Nashville '07) I started with a pace group, he was awful and started off way below what the splits should have been, so I was alone for miles 2-13ish. After all the half-marathoners peeled off, I joined up with a girl who I'd been following for a mile or so. We finished the rest of the race together.

All my halves have been alone and I don't really mind.

Re: Who Runs Marathons Alone?
A lot of times I've had friends want to watch my marathons, so we find a nice spectator spot around 38 - 40 km. I don't want my friends to see me shuffling along and looking bad, so it forces me to keep running nicely, at least till I pass them.

Re: Who Runs Marathons Alone?
I dont train with anyone and gladly to be honest, and therefore I would run races alone. Each run is different in terms of how you feel and how hard you want to push. In a race situation I tend to find someone who I run alongside at the same pace as myself, sometimes they wouldnt even know you are running on their shoulder and sometimes you can both gain from each. At water stations you tend to lose people and then its starts all over again.....Im running a marathon next month in ireland and will run this race alone also.

Re: Who Runs Marathons Alone?
Just as an observation, it's interesting how people can talk about running a race "alone" when they're in a crowd of hundreds or even thousands of people (at least at the big races). Like Blaine Moore said, unless you are running on a trail in the middle of the woods with no one else in sight, you're never truly alone. There are always people to chat with, however briefly, people to pace off of, people to encourage and be encouraged by. I often feel alone at the start or end of a race, because I typically go to races by myself, but I almost never feel alone during a race.

I always race alone unless I am specifically asked to pace someone.

Re: Who Runs Marathons Alone?
I knew a group of runners that did all their long training runs together and then ran a marathon together, even holding hands and running across the finish together. There were about seven of them. They were of widely varying abilities and just wanted to have one big happy hug run together I guess. I never could understand it.

If I knew someone who was going to aim at the same goal time, I might consider it, but probably not. Too much pressure on everyone.

You ran with your FRIEND for 24 miles to help him through his FIRST marathon and you left him behind during the final two grueling miles?? You sound like you enjoyed beating him by those 4 minutes. When driving home, I hope you drove him to his door and not let him off a few miles from his house!

Re: Who Runs Marathons Alone?
I run alone cuz I'm the only one who can fit in my shoes, really.

But seriously, folks.

I've run alone for a number of years. Its just how it worked out. My friends dont' run and like to tease me that I'm crazy. :P I've run one race with my brother & one with my sister, but others have been solo.

Re: Who Runs Marathons Alone?
I've only run one race with someone else (out of about 23 or so marathons). I ran with my sister at the 2004 Chicago marathon to help her and her friend run a 4 hour BQ time. They were successful!
I'm running this years Chicago with my brother who is attempting to run a 3:15 to BQ. Here's wishing him (and myself!) good luck!

What's the problem with that? He had his goal. He'd been telling me for a few miles to go on ahead. We are both competitive runners, he just needed somebody to slow him down early in the race so that he wouldn't crash and burn like some of our friends had a week earlier in their first marathon.

He finished the race, beat his goal time by 5 minutes, and was in a great mood afterwards. I finished the race, ran a PR, ran 40 seconds under my average pace per mile for the last two miles, and felt like I had run an easy long run for the day.

Just because it was his first marathon doesn't mean that it was his first race. He's been running almost as long as I have, is around a 16 minute 5k runner, around a 75 minute half marathoner, and is no stranger to 15-20 mile runs at tempo pace.

Yep, that's exactly where I run my races. And they're small - <100 frequently, sometimes <10, once a year near a couple hundred. And being older female, I'm usually DFL or close. (but getting close to back of mid-pack or front of back-of-pack in my one large race)

Occasionally there's been a sweep and occasionally I've picked up some poor pacers who went out too fast and they tag along. I actually prefer to run independently, since my pace / effort seldom matches anyone else's.
