40's on the Run -- Week of 12/16

Well, here we are....safely on the other side. How's everyone coming along with balancing Christmas shopping and running?

Got packages in the mail yesterday, now it's on to Christmas cards. Yep, I'm late! Oh, and running....5 miles yesterday at 10:39 pace. Feelin' good....hip holding up well, and so is the rest of me.

OK....let's hear from you 40's. Have you made it over the wall here yet?

Well, this is ...going to take some getting used to. I've been "cool running" since for a bit now, bouncing between newbie cafe and multisport forums. Really dedicated to the ex-smokers suport thread. Try to browse and post here and there on whatever topics strike me. Thought I'd pay more attention to 40's on the run as I turned 40 Nov. 5th.. Hope to talk to ya more:D

Re: 40's on the Run -- Week of 12/16

Well I'll definatly keep you all up to date on my progress. My wife ran her first TRI sprint in Aug. at 48, so I figured,if she can do it. Also have a three time Ironman that's helping both of us. My running is / was getting pretty good, cold and snow has dampened my running somewhat. Started swimming about three weeks ago, and am finding it quite difficult, but getting better. And, just got and tried for first time, the bike trainer an have also found that to be a little challenging to say the least. So far of the three, I'm finding running to be my favorite, but overall enjoying the fact that I can do any of it at all. I wish I had started this all YEARS ago. The upside to all of this however is hittiing all of the new milestones. Everything is all so new to me so when I hit a new PB, no matter how small, it' a big deal. It's a great motivator. It has also been great having cool runnnings for the suppport, motivation, and camradrie. Again, look forward to "meeting" all of you here.

Re: 40's on the Run -- Week of 12/16

We're here! I've been having such withdrawals not being able to
talk and share with you all. At least my fears of not being able to
find my peeps is gone.

So what's happened since last we talked -

  • on Wednesday? Thursday worked the hill, paying attention to cadence
this round, as opposed to speed. Was suppose to keep it around 30 foot
strikes (you only count one foot, i.e. every left foot strike) in 20
seconds. I was usually around 28. If I went much slower, I'd have
been walking up the hill. The upside - I wasn't exhausted at the end.
Nice!

Saturday Karen and I ran the entire Headwaters Trail and
got to experience a small portion of the redwood grove that was saved.
It was absolutely unbelievable. Stunning. No pictures to show, but
there's no way pictures could have done justice to what we saw anyway.
The entire trail is a trail runner's deam. Quite a bit of uphill with
switched backs, but once you get to the "top," the trail undulates and
bends all over the place. Coming out is a blast 'cause it's mostly
downhill.

We were out there about 2 1/2 hours. Karen's body is
still recovering from her severe food poisoning, it really drained her
stamina, so we kept it nice and slow. We had a great time - until we
got back to the parking lot. We came around the corner and I just
started freaking out. Took Karen a few minutes to grasp the problem.
Someone had smashed out the front and back windows on the driver side
of my car. Oh man, I freaked! All I could think was that
they'd gotten my purse, which I'd stuffed through the back seat into
the trunk. Thankfully, all they ended up with was a really nice tote
bag that was in the back seat with a couple of pairs of gloves, a
scarf, and some teaching material for legal secretaries class my
association is going to do. I didn't realize that until today, though.

Oh
man, all I can say is I'm glad no one else was around 'cause I don't
know if I've ever used so much foul language in my life. It was just
shear, unadulterated anger. Karen, bless her heart, kept a
level head, which helped calm me down. We cleaned out the shards from
the window and were just about to get in and leave when a ranger showed
up. Who, by the way, was oh so very cute . . . but I digress. Some
people who lived nearby had driven into the parking lot to turn around
and saw my car and a van with the windows busted and had called the
sheriff, who called the ranger (the Headwaters is on BLM land). He
took a report and said he'd be coming back over the next couple of
days, hide, and see if whoever it was comes back.

There were two
cars in the parking lot when we arrived around 7:15. Something in the
back of my mind nagged me about it, but I shrugged it off. Never
again. Thankfully, Karen has (1) a big garage and (2) two cars, so my
car is in her garage until it quits raining and I can get it in
somewhere to get fixed, and she's letting me borrow one of her cars so
I don't have to rack up rental car charges to boot. The really crappy
part of this is we absolutely loved that trail, and now I don't
feel safe going back there. And it's ammunition for my husband who
already is fond of telling me that us going out by ourselves is
dangerous. He's out of town this weekend and doesn't get back 'til
tomorrow, so he doesn't know about it yet. ***sigh*** I sure am happy to find you guys . . . .

Re: 40's on the Run -- Week of 12/16

I'm confused....i can't find anything and I tried to "migrate' or whatever it's called and it told me I already exist. Why don't we have categories separated anymore?

I missed you guys too...had some serioues withdrawals! I hope everyone checks in soon.

I ran 3 miles on Sat and 3 on Sunday in the pouring rain (which was actually kinda fun) and now my hammy hurts again...ugh! I thought it was all better. Then I went to an ornament exchange yesterday and got the dud ornament, but I didn't care, it was fun being with everyone.

So I'll be in a Series 7 prep class all week, everyone say a prayer that I don't feel like a complete MORON when I get there.

Good weeks all!!

Re: 40's on the Run -- Week of 12/16

Since we have the ability, thought I'd try out the "fancy" stuff, like color! Woke up to pouring down rain this a.m., but by the time I pulled it together and got out the door, it had stopped. Was a bit on the chilly side, but was definitely colder when I left for work about 3 hours later. Did five 2-minute strides this a. m. Actually, I don't think I would hate them so much if I didn't sort of feel nauseous and like I needed to go to the bathroom at the end of every one. My average was 8:09 for the 10 minutes.

I looked at my Garmin for Saturday, and since it only tracked 3.83 miles (we did 11 miles), it says I was doing 43:12 mm. Ha!

Got my car into the shop this morning. It's one of the more expensive places, but they had room to put it inside until they can replace the windows tomorrow. I needed to get it somewhere today, 'cause it's suppose to start raining like crazy and not provide another window until maybe Friday. Although, Karen's care is really frigging nice and I'm not so anxious to give it back! ;)

_Carol _- Glad the hip's feeling better. _Joe _- Glad you found Mtnchk and Sillybear. I know we have Tamara back. Need to look for some others. I haven't tried to log in any info, but I did find the spot where you can ask Active to move your stuff over. If it comes down to it, I'll just figure something out for my desk top at home to log on info. We'll see. I also don't like that this site sends you an email whenever someone "replies" to your post. I've had to indicate that anything from here is spam; otherwise, what a pain! I suppose we just gotta get used to things!

Have a great day, everyone! It's so nice to "see" you all again. OH Tamara - Good luck on your test, girlfriend!

Re: 40's on the Run -- Week of 12/16
Hi All, have a little more time now.

Silly Bear-glad you found your way over here.I started a new log at mapmyrun.com.It's alot like CRunnings and has what I think is an important feature, the shoe tracker. From what I have read, here they charge you for it.

Carol-that's really great about your runs going better.Sounds like you're back to your progressive self.Like I have found, that "downtime" makes you appreciate even more those times when things are going well.I'm happy for you.

Leslie-some nice runs for you and too bad about your car. That musta been scary. Not only that,I'm sure that feeling of being "violated' comes in too.We once had our house broken into, and I know that feeling really sucks.Along those lines and what Carol was saying,I take for granted being a male and usually with Buddy,to just go and run anytime or any place.I really don't worry about who is around me and such, but I could just be naive too.

Tamara- Good Luck with your class and test.Happy to hear you're running some.I wouldn't worry much about how much. You sure did put in alot of training for your marathon.

Had a couple of splendid runs this weekend. On Fri at prolonged lunchhour : 10.5m @9:30 pace.(I love getting paid for time spent running )Yesterday,in between storms Buddy and I went out for a 6m trail run. It's been at least a month since being on my favorite trails.About 45f and raining out,but the wind had dropped down.By the time we got home we were both soaked, muddy from top to bottom, and a big fat grin on both our faces!!

Hope our other 40 friends find their way,and also we can find some new friends here.

Take care, Joe
