feeling sleepy while running

Good morning, all! I was just wondering if anyone else ever feels sleepy in the middle of a run. Periodically while running, I feel like I could fall asleep in the middle of a run. I just want to go to the curb and lie down. Cardio and physically during the run, I feel great, it's just that I feel sleepy. I have had this off and on for 20 years. Yesterday, I ran a half marathon and I got this feeling again. It wasn't for the enire run, just for about 4-5 miles. It drives me crazy! Anyway, can anyone relate or know what might be causing this?
Thanks!

Re: feeling sleepy while running
I get that exact feeling every once in a while during runs. Last time it happened I remember thinking to myself, "Wow, I just want to drop to the dirt (it was in a trail), curl up and close my eyes". And I wasn't feeling overly exerted or physically exhausted at all.

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with hypoglycemia.

Re: feeling sleepy while running
I get that pretty regularly and forgive me if this sounds stupid, but it's because I don't get enough sleep. I've found that getting enough sleep has been the biggest challenge in training for my first marathon.

This is actually pretty dangerous. I've gotten so sleepy that my eyes lose focus and start rolling up in my head. Tripping becomes likely not to mention the fact that often you're running in the street and there's oncoming traffic.

Get more sleep and you'll be fine.

Re: feeling sleepy while running
Same here sometimes too....especially on my Sunday morning long runs. And when it does happened, it's not like I closed down the bars the night before. I usually have slept well, and can't explain this either. But I might add, that Sundays are the only day I run in the mornings. The rest of my runs are the the evening after work, and I never experience the sleepy feeling then.... which a person would think it would be the opposite.

Re: feeling sleepy while running
Oh yeah, I get that all the time. For me I figure it's because I go running at 3-4:00am when most sensible people are still asleep! It seems to happen to me most often during the winter. Last year I distinctly remember thinking that curling up at the end of my neighbor's driveway and going to sleep sounded like a good idea.

I don't know that there's any way to prevent it other than getting more sleep...

Re: feeling sleepy while running
oh my gosh this happens to me TOO! It comes on out of nowhere and seems to have no apparent cause. You're definitely not alone! I try to resist the urge to close my eyes though for fear of tripping or getting hit by a car, or more importantly looking like a lunatic. Seriously though, I usually take that opportunity to eat a sports bean or drink something and I can usually work through it.

Re: feeling sleepy while running
I don't think lack of sleep is his problem. That would be too easy to figure out and he's had the problem for 20 years. When I get it, I don't feel tired before or after the run and I'm sure I would if sleep were the issue.

Re: feeling sleepy while running
Wow nice to know that so many others have experienced this too (than me being the only one having it). I do get sleepy occasionally during runs. I don't think its just my eyes. When I do get sleepy during runs I can feel myself slow down a little and me trying to bring the pace back to normal again. But usually I just push on and nothing bad happens. However, there are runs that make me feel like shutting my eyes flat and just sleeping after I am done with it.

Also, when I had this insane diet I seemed to be getting more of these sleepy runs. However, during that period I was also busy and didn't get proper sleep so that might not be the case.

Re: feeling sleepy while running
This thread made me laugh out loud. I actually attempted to get a little shut eye during my long run yesterday. It was pouring rain, so I was on a treadmill. I got bored and my eyelids were getting droopy, so I thought I would let them close and see what happened. I put my hands on the rails and thought I would just trot along for a bit. I started getting motion sickness almost right away, so decided that wasn't a good idea.

But normally, no, I don't get sleepy when I'm running.

I also feel this way on occasion. It makes me feel silly but it's kinda fun. I thought it was due to sleeplessness and hard training.

Have you had your blood sugar levels checked as a precaution?

Re: feeling sleepy while running
Here is a different spin on what may be the problem. First of all, I too have felt so relaxed during a run that I wanted to just curl-up right then and there. It doesn't matter whether I've had 6 or 10 hrs of sleep.I also find myself during the day, even like 8:00am -9:00am. feeling so sleepy that if I happen to nod off, even for 30 seconds, I can go right into REM sleep. This I found out, is a symptom of perhaps a mild case of Narcolepsy. Haven't gone to see a Dr. yet, but am hoping to soon.

Re: feeling sleepy while running
I don't think it has a whole lot to do with how much sleep you are getting unless you are extremely sleep deprived. I may fall asleep watching a football game or reading a book, but not while running 8 miles an hour. I have had this very same thing happen to me on a few occasions over the years, and I have always been able to trace it back to diet in the preceding 24 hours. If you are not getting enough carbs your body will shut you down. Take some gels with you and make sure you are taking in a high enough percentage of carbs in your daily diet.

Re: feeling sleepy while running
Actually, I've only ever had that "extremely sleepy" feeling once. I was starting to develop a case of conjunctivitis, but foolishly I did not take antibiotics right away.

I went on an 8 mile run, and the run was SO hard for me to do (very unusual). I just plodded along at 10 minute mile pace (pretty slow for me). It was extremely exhausting and I had never felt anything like that before. I don;t even remember what my rationale was at the time, but I went ahead and finished the run even though I felt like ****.

Sure enough, the next day I became extremely sick (cold/fever etc with full fledged pink eye), and had to take a week off.

So the moral is, if sleepiness during runs is not common for you, then when it DOES happen, STOP!!! and take those stupid antibiotics if you're sick
