Loooove programing music for each specific course, if I can run it ahead of time. Middle section can be anything from blues harmonica music (the "Train" sound, for steep hills), to Elton Johns' "Rocket Man" for Marathons, ("think its gonna be a long, long time"..I'm a 5 hr. marathoner!). Always start a race with "Chariots of Fire" and end with Jerry Lee Lewis' "Great Balls of Fire" for that final KICK. Sorry to see it being ruled out at races.

    Re: Music to run to

There has yet to be a thread on this forum (or on any of the major running forums I've visited, for that matter) in which someone who posts looking for music is not excoriated by some ostensible purist with an axe to grind, as if somehow that person wearing headphones detracts from the other person's experience; more likely it's an opportunity to be holier-than-thou.

djsteve, on one of my other boards we call this person RUBP-random unhelpful bit*hy poster

    Re: Music to run to

Oh dear, I'm going to be the unruly college kid here and name some bands that fall from some peoples classification of music. But keep in mind I listen to jazz and classical when I'm studying or just sitting around.

Norma Jean - A Grand Scene For A Color Film
Norma Jean - A Small Spark vs. A Great Forrest
Norma Jean - No Passenger No Parasite
Underoath - Almost anything by them
Thursday - Almost anything by them
Walls of Jericho - Anything by them
    etc. etc.

Theres just something about it. It's so crazy and aggressive that you can't help but run faster.

Thanks so much for sharing INXS (I forgot about them) and Mr. Brightside - good beat for me.  I already had many of the others listed.

In the hopes that more folks will post more good bpm songs that I can stand to listne to, here's some of my faves now:

This Modern Love - Bloc Party
    Animals - Nickleback
    Everlong - Foo Fighters

    and my favorite right now:
Ain't nothing Wrong with that - Robert Randolph

If you don't like them, ... I'll still listen to 'em!

If I posted somewhere saying, gee, I'd really like some good Christian prayers I can say for my daughter's health, and someone posted, Well, *I* don't pray at all -- well, golly, that's just swell for you, but it isn't why we're here, is it?

I wish I could have said it as well. Such pureness of thought is why you are sure to be multi-blessed!

    Re: Music to run to

I have a running playlist on my ipod
When I first started running I only had 4 songs, not I am up to 13. Most of it is rap because the bass gets my pumped...

eminem-lose yourself (i always start with this one)
    kanye west-stronger
    eminem-8 mile
    eminem-til i collapse
    nelly-heart of a champion
    dropkick murphys-shipping up to boston
    justin timberlake-summer love
    swizz beatz-money in the bank
    unk-2 step
    unk-walk it out
    survivor-eye of the tiger
    T.I.-top down
    T.I.-bring em out

There was an article a while back in my newspaper about races banning headphones and how serious runners don't use them.  I would not call myself a serious runner but i run at least 3 miles a day, have ran in a 5K, two 5 milers, a 10K and am running in another 5 miler on thanksgiving, but i feel that the article was unfair and I think its wrong to ban music from races.  Races are so fun and i dont want to say i need my music to run but i always feel i do better with it.  I dont know thats just my opinion though

Wow, I thought I was the only person on earth who knew who Porcupine Tree was, let alone ran to their music... Currently I've got some PT, Nine Inch Nails and Tweaker loaded onto my nano for running. On the flip side of that, I've found that mantra/chanting music works really well, such as Krishna Das and GuruGanesha Singh. To each, his/her own, indeed!
