Chicago Marathon... ready & excited

My two previous marathon times were 4:30 (2002) and 4:56 (2005). I couldn't run more than half a mile at a 7:30 pace. I was averaging 20-35 miles per week. Lots of little injuries. I could never push past 40 mpw.

In August 2006 I swore I wouldn't run a marathon until I could nail a sub-3:30 time. After 15 diligent months of training, I'm ready. In fact, the 3:30 time should be easy. If everything goes perfectly I may be fast enough to run a sub-3:15:59 and qualify for Boston; but if not, I'm confident I can BQ next year.

It's a very satisfying feeling to be on the verge of the big race and know that I'm ready, that I'm as well-trained as I could be. A year ago I didn't know how I'd ever run a 7:30 pace or run more than 50 miles a week. Now I'm running 60-80 mpw and am regularly running sub-7:00 tempos. The human body is amazing. For the first time in my life I feel like an athlete. Whatever the outcome, BQ or not, I'm going to have an awesome race experience and I'm going to enjoy every mile.

One of my favorite marathon moments is the 5 minutes before the starting gun goes off. The energy and excitement is unbelievable: 45,000 runners in the best shape of their lives, one third of whom have never run more than 20 miles before and have no idea what to expect. Words can't describe it.

Good luck Chicago Marathoners, and I'll see you out there...

Yeah Baby!

I love to hear your confidence, it is inspiring.

I felt a similar sense of readiness for my previous marathon and it was well deserved. I ran a great race, BQ'd, and felt awesome the whole time. I am now trained and ready for my next PR My goal is a bit aggressive and the weather isn't quite cooperating, so I may tone down my goal a bit afterall, but still should have quite a race.

YOU'RE READY!!

All the best,
Karen

wow, I'm impressed! That's a big mileage differential! Did you have any difficulties/injuries in getting there? May I ask your gender, age, etc.?

Harper - Good luck to you, and thanks for that last paragraph about the excitement at the beginning. I'm one of those first-timers, and I'm very nervous because I have no idea what lies ahead. My goal is just to finish and enjoy every bit of that race. I've been crying on and off over this for the past two weeks (tapering has been the pits!) because I'm overwhelmed at how far I've come. Do you have any words of advice for a first-timer?

Harper, Wow! I'm very impressed. You're the classic example of someone who's put in the hard work over a long period of time and is about to reap the rewards. You are amazing. Got out there and kick some butt. You've earned it and you'll do it.

TK5, You're in for one of the most incredible experiences of your life. Start easy, run smart and enjoy the ride. Try to savor as much as you can. I wish I could remember every step of my first marathon, but I'll settle for the very warm memories I have. You're going to do fine, too.

Best of luck to both of you. Please post race reports. We really love to hear your stories and will celebrate your success with you.

Well Said Harper, you pretty much sum up the feeling on the day for me as well. Good luck with your run.

Good luck!

I ran Chicago last year and it was a good race

One piece of warning, be prepared to be dodging crowds the WHOLE route. I found it better to stay on the outside but there was a lot of weaving in and out and I saw a lot of people get tripped

Have fun

Best of luck to you, though it doesn't look like you'll need any, training as smartly as you've done. Your improvement is truly exciting and I can't wait to hear the report!

Question about your training. I like the idea of 2 tempo runs a week, did you do any interval work on top of this, or just the tempos?
