Not that unpredictable.

Chicago Marathon finishers:
2000 - 27,870; average finish time 4:30
2001 - 28,390; 4:27
2002 - 31,093; 4:28
2003 - 32,395, 4:34
2004 - 33,033; n/a
2005 - 32,995; 4:35
2006 - 33,618; 4:35
2007 - 28,815; 5:03[/B]

That is cool information!! Also though, I wonder how they are even publishing any number at all past about 3:30 finishing time. Several people ran less than 26 miles, yet crossed the finish mat and were given a finish time.

I'm willing to bet the # of actual finishers is well below that number and the average finish time of people who went the full 26.2 is decently slower than that.

Wrong...check when that bib number went through the start. It took that runner 24:57 to get to the start. That's about a 54 minute 10k pace. That's about a 8:45 mile. In case you haven't run Chicago, some take a very long time just to get to the start line.

That is pretty cool information. KC is right. I wonder what the % of registered vs. finishers was in '07. Assuming it is way off the average, that would make even the 5:03 average time look faster than what it COULD have been.

Crazy!

Having run then... It was hot AND humid. I shut it down at mile 5 and had a 21 mile jog/walk to the finish. Keep in mind that there are thousands of runners at Boston who do NOT qualify but get in through charity support, sponsor exemptions, or just plain jump in without numbers - all of whom got water. I don't know why Chicago went so poorly - but I do know that the BAA and DMSE do a heck of a job at Boston.

I would actually bet that if we could find the humidity data from that day, my memory tells me that midday humidity was VERY low, like in the 3X% range. It was cool in the 50s when they bussed us to Hopkinton, then shot up FAST. When temps go up fast humidity plummets. I think this was a key difference between Boston 04 and Chicago 07...Boston was not nearly as humid. I dumped water on myself continuously and it evaporated well, so I know it was dry.

Personally I'd like to see them put a time cap or lottery in place to regulate the race. Capping out registration 6 months early is not really good for anyone involved.

Gotta love how water was denied all those runners and he's sitting on a comfortable chair with a big fat bottle of water next to him.
